Gardening

A simple way to grow vegetables in your garden
We have all been there; you choose your varieties of vegetable seeds, bring them on lovingly to healthy seedlings and then plant them out in the garden with great care. It all looks so promising! Then come the slugs, weeds and snails. You get to water the plants for a couple of days and all your dreams of luscious home grown vegetables vanish like the slug-munched lettuces! You begin to realise that a productive vegetable patch needs quite a lot of planning, preparation and commitment.
One extremely good way of having fresh vegetables available is to grow as much as you can on the patio (or back yard). For a start the crops are near the back door for easy watering. There is virtually no weeding to do and pests can be easily spotted and dealt with. Use a good compost and large plastic pots. Bring on the seeds in seed trays and then plant them out in the correct time into your containers. Tomatoes, lettuces, peppers, radishes and carrots can all be grown like this and now there are special varieties of many vegetable seeds including cauliflower, aubergine/eggplant and runner bean which have been specially bred for growing in containers.
There are varieties of tomatoes which are suited to container growing especially those which do not need staking up. "Cut and come again" lettuces are exceptionally good for growing in pots. They grow very easily and quickly and you just cut the leaves that you need and they are rapidly replaced by new ones. A few plants can provide leaves for the whole summer.

It can be a work of art, as simple as pots along the side of the steps or an elaborate balcony container garden. Container gardening is limited only by imagination and desire. With little soil or space, selecting the right plants and containers can result in a beautiful, functional patio, deck, balcony, walkway or doorstep. Containers provide you more control over soil, watering, sun and shade; allowing you to make your statement in the garden. Container gardening is also mobile gardening, with the flexibility to start small in building your Garden of Eden and quickly change your focal points with the seasons, new found plant treasures or your mood. While the possibilities for container gardening are endless, consider the following -

Lisha Utt
Frederick County Master Gardener Program I love container gardening, too, and with many annuals still blooming this fall here are some ideas for your containers. If your deck or patio is filled with containers like mine, you're probably finding some plants look very tired and need to be replaced, while others still look good. Unfortunately, the flowers that are still growing well are usually spread amongst all the pots, so consider combining them into one, three or five pots (depending on how many you have to start with). You might also like to add some new plants such as pansies, fall kale or even small evergreens. The tired plants can be removed, and containers you don't use can be put away for the winter. Place your "new" containers in strategic locations where you can best enjoy them, like by your patio door, outside a kitchen window or grouped by your outside seating area. There are many summer annuals that can handle the cool temperatures, including verbena, nemesia, bidens, million bells (Calibrachoa), lantana, zonal geraniums (Pelargonium x hortum), red grass (Pennisetum rubrum), diascia and gerbera daisies. Even if you haven't planted any of these particular plants this year, you may want to consider including them in your containers next spring. Like your perennial borders, where you plan to have something(s) blooming throughout the summer and fall, the same idea can be used with your containers by including annuals you know will look great throughout fall.

Container Gardening Container gardening is a fun way for anyone to garden. To those living in a condo, apartment or who are challenged by physical limitations, growing something in a container is a wonderful way to get close to nature. Growing, maturing and caring for a plant can be very therapeutic and many get satisfaction from seeing their work boom or being able to harvest fruit and vegetables they have grown. Gardening in containers is easy. A large variety of containers are available for these gardens, but be aware of limitations. In the dry, Colorado climate, moss baskets don't do well. A gardener is better off using something that does not dry out as fast. Good choices are a plastic pot placed inside of a basket or decorative clay pot, or put a plastic pot inside of a moss basket instead of planting directly in one. Unique containers make wonderful conversation pieces and express personality. Use old shoes, boots, animal containers, crates, or natural containers such as rocks, driftwood or old stumps with holes drilled in them. Anything that will hold soil and plants, and will drain, will do. For a more traditional container garden, whiskey barrels, terra cotta pots, ceramic pots, plastic pots and window boxes are all available at local garden centers. Most pots will hold all the plants you wish to grow. Containers can be planted with a single plant variety or color, or various plants and hues can be mixed together. A whole pot of red geraniums, another pot full of yellow marigolds and another pot of blue petunias can also be grouped together to give a mixed-planter look.

THE SOIL OR PLANTING MEDIUM *use a good quality potting medium, porous for root aeration and drainage, but capable of water and nutrient retention

The advantages are that you can to a degree control the plants conditions. For example if you live in a chalky soil area and wish to grow azaleas or other acid loving plants you have a problem. If you opt to grow them in pots you can use a sedge type peat combined with dressings of iron sulphate or flowers of sulphur to maintain a low or acid pH. (Ericaceous compost helps create the ideal environment) There many advantages to using containers some of which do not spring to mind immediately such as the additional height the plant gains, no need to wait for it to grow. Another advantage is that using containers means that you can experiment with different combinations of plants moving them around changing how they interact together with regard to the heights, leaf colour and flower colour. As the seasons change you can rearrange the pot to highlight the most interesting plant, placing the flowing plants at the front.

Growing mixes 1 part sterile, clean sand (play sand)1 part composted cow manure, 1 part milled peat moss and 1 part compost. Mix well and water, place some gravel or small rocks in the bottom of the pot to hold in the soil, about 2". Add your mix, plant, water well and watch them grow! Water containers dry out really rather quickly especially in hot weather. One of the easiest ways to determine whether your container needs water or not it to purchase one of those really inexpensive moisture meters or if the first inch or so is dry it probably needs to be watered. Water Quality the Best to the Worst..... pond, rain, well water or if all else fails tap water. Do not use softened water on plants, it will kill them. Reverse Osmosis is good pure water also, a good hydroponic nutrient or aquarium supplement should supplement the watering. Fertilizer The more you need to water the more you are flushing important nutrients out the bottom of the pot. In hot 90° weather you will need to fertilize with a good organic fertilizer about every 2 weeks. Only use organic fertilizers, the non-organic ones can accumulate inside the pot and weaken the roots. Hydroponic fertilizers are good, check if they are organic.

What pot?: The larger the pot the better, although of course bulbs can be adapted to plant in any sized container. Wooden containers offer the best insulation in frosty areas, whilst clay, stone and even lined willow baskets and plastic pots are suitable in all but the most severe winter weather. A vast choice and range of materials for containers are available in an even larger array of different shapes and sizes. When looking at putting bulbs into containers it is often better to select the bulb or bulbs that you will be planting into the containers and then select the type, size and shape of the pot to fit in with your bulb selection. Pots/containers are ideal for transforming any area into a vibrant colourful aspect. Growing bulbs in containers: This is an ideal way to grow a wide range of bulbs, especially if you have a small garden or patio. When planting in containers you should ensure that each container has adequate drainage holes and that a good quality potting compost is used for planting the bulbs in. Bulbs with different planting depths can be planted in layers in the same pot. When using layered planting, either choose bulb varieties that will bring a spread of flowering or a number of varieties that will flower together and compliment each other. Which ever way you choose, use the select option on our site to select the bulbs that are most suited for container growing.

There are many flower pots and containers out in the market today and they come in many, many different materials, forms and colors. Flower pots and containers add a considerable amount of value to your garden design and certainly boost the character of your garden by adding a myriad of color and texture to what may otherwise be a lifeless scene. They are a consideration we use to bring the garden closer to us indoors without which plants would have to be left best outdoors. One cannot deny that having green within our home has added color and pleasure to our lives. Benefits of Planters: Consider the advantages of flower pots and container gardening:
  • They bring color to a porch and deck allowing you to introduce brightly colored greenery such as the use of variegated green and colored leaves, and brightly colored blooms such as tulips, geraniums and marigolds.

http://www.gardeningdelight.co.uk/Container_Gardening.html
Gardening Delight
Container gardens can create a natural sanctuary in a busy city street, along rooftops or on balconies. You can easily accentuate the welcoming look of a deck or patio with colourful pots of annuals, or fill your window boxes with beautiful shrub roses or any number of small perennials. Whether you arrange your pots in a group for a massed effect or highlight a smaller space with a single specimen, you'll be delighted with this simple way to create a garden. Container gardening enables you to easily vary your color scheme, and as each plant finishes flowering, it can be replaced with another. Whether you choose to harmonize or contrast your colors, make sure there is variety in the height of each plant. Think also of the shape and texture of the leaves. Tall strap-like leaves will give a good vertical background to low-growing, wide-leaved plants. Choose plants with a long flowering season, or have others of a different type ready to replace them as they finish blooming. Experiment with creative containers. You might have an old porcelain bowl or copper urn you can use, or perhaps you'd rather make something really modern with timber or tiles. If you decide to buy your containers ready-made, terracotta pots look wonderful, but tend to absorb water. You don't want your plants to dry out, so paint the interior of these pots with a special sealer available from hardware stores.

My Secret Garden
The Ringes Family Holiday Photograph 2001 “New seed is faithful. Its roots deepest in the places that are most empty” - The Faithful Gardener by Clarissa Pincola Estes Gardening with Barrels In a lovely, suburban neighborhood in Canton, Michigan, Ret. Major Gerald Ringes and his pretty wife, "Tiny" Ina Ringes grow Van Dyke Zinnias in barrels that decorate the patio and select corners of their tidy yard. Twenty-two years in the U.S. Air Force (including a tour of duty in Vietnam as a pilot), Jerry decided to retire to Michigan almost 24 years ago. For 11 of those 24 years, he flew a plane for the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan out of Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti. He now enjoys computer programming and staying in touch with his buddies via email, sometimes spending hours on the computer until Mrs. Ringes "unplugs him" and sends him scurrying out into the back yard, where he waters zinnias or does other chores one leisurely enjoys during retirement. Married 43 years to Mrs. Ringes, the couple spend lovely days puttering about the yard, playing bridge with good friends on Saturday nights, and enjoying their friends and activities at their church. They have four grown children, one now living in Paris, France while working for IBM. Two other kids live in Oswego, New York and Missiouri; and their daughter, Betty, lives in Stockbridge, Michigan where she, too, grows Zinnias. In fact, these pictures show zinnias planted by Betty at her parents' Canton home. Her green thumb cannot be disputed, as proven here in the stunning photographs taken by Mr. Ringes one sunny summer day recently.
