Tips and Techniques For Watering Your Container Garden Plants
The importance of proper watering cannot be stressed enough for your container garden plants. Container Gardens are exposed to wind and sun so they dry out quicker than plants in the ground. There are no exact rules about watering your container garden plants. You have to become acquainted with the needs of various garden plants. The best tip is to examine them daily and water the plant when the surface of the soil begins to look dry. Feeling the soil will also help you determine the moisture needs of your container garden. Or, take the easy way and invest in a water meter if you are not sure. How much and when to water will depend on the kind of plant and soil, the type and size of container, and the amount of exposure to sun and wind. Climate and the weather also play their part. During hot spells most plants in your container garden need daily water, except those in small clay pots, which may require it twice. Some plants, like fuchsias and tuberous begonias, wilt when dry, but geraniums and succulents are not so sensitive to neglect. On the other hand, it is good to let soil dry out a little between watering. This prevents the soil from depleting its nutrients. Since unglazed containers dry out quickest, watch them more closely. Wooden tubs, window boxes, and planters dry out more slowly; metal is the slowest of all. Groups of plants in large containers keep moist longer than single specimens. A good technique to avoid excess dryness is to have groupings of plants, arranged close together. This allows the container plants to shade one another to keep cool and stop moisture evaporation.

Colourful Evergreens - shrubs - for Winter Container.
Containers full of flowering plants in the summer usually give a maximum of five months of colour – depending on the weather conditions, yet a tub of colourful evergreens, shrubs, can supply us with unlimited colour and interest. This is especially the case when it is much needed. Winter!

Planting up a tub of evergreens for winter colour is different to planting a summer flowering container. With summer bedding containers you have to allow the plants room to grow and develop, which means that the newly planted container can look a bit ‘empty’ until the plants have established. Not so with a winter tub of evergreens. Instant effect! Four or five specimens in a container are often all that are required for immediate colour. As evergreens do not grow (too much) through the winter months, fairly mature specimens should be planted to give the desired effect. There is no need to allow the plants room to grow because they won’t!

Container gardening can be a choice as well as a solution! Just because you live in an apartment
have limited space and have to use containers. Honestly, though, there are many advantages to
container gardening. Having to contend with less weeds is my favorite ;)
In some instances, you actually have less pests. The soil heats up faster and heat-loving plants
most likely not have a problem finding those that suit your tastes and needs. But remember; in
order for your plants to thrive, their individual needs must be met. So keep this in mind when
choosing containers for your plants. The different materials and sizes of containers each have their pros and cons. Clay containers : While relatively inexpensive, clay containers tend to dry out quickly and also salt cold temperatures! Plastic containers : Plastic containers dry out rather quickly just as clay pots do. Also, if light- colored, they tend to deteriorate faster than say ceramic.

Container Gardening is a hobby that all ages can enjoy and learn quickly.

Planning a Container Water Garden for Any Yard I have an admission to make. I’m a natural born swamp-child. To me, there are few things in this world more beautiful than the marshy edges where pond meets woods and creates the perfect growing environment for cattails, water-lilies, lotus, cabomba and lush green ferns. Alas, it has been my misfortune to live in the middle of the city, in rented apartments with postage stamps for yards. For years, I lusted after large, spacious backyards with room to dig your own pond. I read articles on building water gardens, koi ponds, and backyard fountains and sighed with envy. Then I discovered a simple fact – all it takes to create a water garden is a sunny spot that’s big enough for a pot of water. It’s no more difficult to grow a water garden in a container than it is to grow any other container gardens. If you have a sunny spot – at the very least 6 hours of full sun daily throughout the summer – you can create a water garden. Your water garden can be as simple as a large tub with a few submerged plants, or as elaborate as several arranged container gardens with rocks and a fountain powered by a circulating pump. If you’d like to try your hand at creating a simple container water garden, you’ll find everything you need at a local home supply store like Home Depot. Planning a Container Water Garden
Location is the single most important factor in planning your water garden. Your space can be as small as a single square yard, but it MUST receive plenty of sun throughout the day. Think twice about locating a water garden of any sort beneath an overhanging tree. The leaves that fall will decay in the water and can foul it. If you’re building an actual pond, or using a large container like a swimming pool, check local ordinances regarding safety.

Posted by admin under Home Container gardening enables you to easily vary your color scheme, and as each plant finishes flowering, it can be replaced with another. Whether you choose to harmonize or contrast your colors, make sure there is variety in the height of each plant. Think also of the shape and texture of the leaves. Tall strap-like leaves will give a good vertical background to low-growing, wide-leaved plants. Choose plants with a long flowering season, or have others of a different type ready to replace them as they finish blooming. If you have steps leading up to your front door, an attractive pot plant on each one will delight your visitors. Indoors, pots of plants or flowers help to create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Decide ahead of time where you want your pots to be positioned, then buy plants that suit the situation. There is no point buying sun lovers for a shady position, for they will not do well. Some plants also have really large roots, so they are best kept for the open garden. If you have plenty of space at your front door, a group of potted plants off to one side will be more visually appealing than two similar plants placed each side. Unless they are spectacular, they will look rather boring.

Landscaping - Container Gardening
One of the most effective ways to save money in your landscape is to engage in the practice of container gardening. Container gardening is making use of different containers to hold your plants. These work for flowers, herbs, and even for vegetables. Container garden requires less maintenance than more conventional flowerbeds and gardens because there is less amendment to the soil and because there are fewer weed problems. Additionally, the costs associated with preparing an area for planting can be avoided when one uses carefully considered containers and planters for their landscaping.
One of the great things about container gardening is the wide variety of items that can be used as containers. Many of the items can be found around the house or even purchased from thrift stores. Old washtubs, and even filing cabinets laid on their sides and removed of their drawers (which can also be used as containers) make great containers. You can even cut the tops off of milk cartons and use the bottom sections as planters. These everyday items can be attractively decorated to look nice.
In addition to converting things like coffee cans and old shoes into fun and cute flower and herb holders, there are plenty of more traditional planters and containers that can be incorporated into an attractive landscape design. Clay pots and large urns make attractive holders, and the urns can even be used to hold vegetables. Additionally, container gardening is not limited to the ground. Hanging baskets bought at the store make excellent additions to any landscape. Plus, they can be hanged from the house, the porch, and even from tree branches and along fences. These baskets create little bursts of color no matter where they are. Window boxes are also attractive variations on container gardening and can add a great deal to the look of a home.

also focuses on container gardening, which the owners have practiced for years. They offer the following tips for home gardeners getting started:
  • Choose a pot or other container carefully, as it will serve as the centerpiece. Available in a wide range of styles, they are now offered in everything from wrought iron to lightweight composite that closely resembles clay. Use a quality potting soil, preferably one that is designed to retain moisture. In selecting plants for the container, keep in mind that all will need to have similar light and water requirements. Read plant labels and ask a professional for advice if you're unsure. Combine an evergreen, with a flowering plant. By switching out the flowering plants as the seasons change, you can enjoy a blooming container garden throughout much of the year. Place a light layer of mulch in the container. It will impart a finished look and help the soil retain moisture.
