Container Gardening
- the Keys to Success
Container gardening is a great way to enjoy growing plants and you can grow a huge range of plants in pots - from trees and flowers to your own fresh vegetables and herbs. Here are the keys to success.
  • Get the potting mix right. Prevent loss of moisture. Manage repotting carefully. Arrange pots together.
Do you know how Osmocote works?
Find out more about the original controlled release fertiliser
Get the potting mix right.
Choose a top quality potting mix. The decision will save you time and effort. A potting mix like Osmocote® Premium Potting Mix needs watering much less often than regular mixes and contains enough fertiliser to feed your vegetables from sowing to harvesting.
Prevent loss of moisture.
Pots can dry out quickly so use a wetting agent such as Hydraflo2® Wetting Agent to ensure water is readily absorbed.
Manage repotting carefully.
Once a plant has outgrown its pot, repot it into a pot one size bigger. Don't plant a small plant straight into a large pot.

Annuals for shady window boxes
Posted by gweigel May 23, 2008 16:23PM
Categories: Annuals Container Gardening By George Weigel /The Patriot-News Q: I have six large wooden window boxes on the first floor of our 2-story saltbox house. The window boxes face north and receive partial sunlight. What types of plants would you recommend using? Something purple would look nice with a nearby planting of 'Happy Returns' daylilies. And is it alright to just set the pots inside of the boxes so you don't have all the weight from the planting soil? A: First, it's great you've got window boxes. They really add a ton of color and interest to houses, and so few people use them.

Container Gardening By Michael Russell
In the summer our patio is a riot of colour as my wife grows a lot in pots. They soften the edges and link the patio to the rest of the garden. When we had a terraced house with a concrete back garden, container growing made life tolerable for me as I grew vegetables in containers. If you have designed your garden in such a way that you have areas of paving or gravel, you may want to liven these up with some well-planted containers. Equally, if your garden is very small, some strategically placed pots full of colourful flowers may be what you need.
Choosing Your Containers
Containers
There's a selection of special containers available for growing vegetables. If you have a metre square then you could use link-a-bord to create a large container or mini raised bed. Grow Pots enable you to maximise the availble compost when using growbags.
  • Potato Barrel Strawberry Barrel Link-a-Bord Grow Pots Pots are an obvious place to start. They come in all shapes and sizes, glazed, terracotta, hand-painted, stone (real or fake), plaster - you name it. If you intend to leave your pots outside all winter and you live in a cold climate, don't forget they must be frost resistant. There's no point buying hand-painted containers in Spain then expecting them to survive a winter in Scotland!
