W elcome to my Conure Page! My fine feathered friend in the picture is Louie. He is a Sunday Conure (Sun / Jenday). He is five years old and is quite a character. I hope to provide some valuable information on these loveable birds. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an abundance of such available, either on or off the net. But, I have found some info that may be of interest to you. Hope you Enjoy!

    Where Are They From?
Conures can be found in most of South and Central America. Some species are also well represented in the West Indies, as well as parts of Mexico. In the wild conures are friendly, peaceful birds and seldom fight with each other. They live together in groups of twenty or more birds, even during the mating season, and feed on various seeds, fruits, and insects. The Many Types There are five genera of conures. A brief description of each follows:
Genus Aratinga This is by far one of the most popular genus of conures. There is some disagreement regarding the actual number of species, but the number seems to be between 15 and 21. The scientific name

Conures are a diverse, loosely-defined group of small to medium-sized parrots . They belong to several genera within a long-tailed group of the New World Parrot subfamily Arinae. The term "conure" is used primarily in bird keeping , though it has appeared in some scientific journals . The American Ornithologists' Union uses the generic term " parakeet " for all species termed conure elsewhere, although Joseph Forshaw , a prominent Australian ornithologist, uses the term "conure". 4. Conures
Information about species, care, diet, and personality.
http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/vines/1492/conures.html
Conures!! Species: There are many different species of conures. The majority fall into the genus Aratinga, along with several in the genus Pyrhurra . The others are Nandayus , which is only a single species, the Nanday conure, Enicognathus , which includes the Slender-billed and Austral conures, and Cyanoliensis , the Patagonian conure. Some sources feel that some other well-known conures (including the Half Moon, Blue Crowned, and others) may also fall into genuses of their own. All conures have long tails and originate from South and Central America; also Mexico. There was one Conure, the Carolina Parakeet, that actually lived in North American as far north as New York and Chicago; however this bird went extinct due to hunting and habitat destruction in the early 1900's. Conures range in size from as tiny as 8 1/2" to up to 21"! Life span: Most conures live around 15 to 35 years. Price: $100-$500 or higher for rare species. The majority of species fall in the $200 to $400 range. Diet: Conures aren't picky about their foods. Being enormously curious and playful, they like a very varied diet and should be provided with foods that offer a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Pellets that come in different shapes and colors are often preffered over "plain" pellets. Conures are prone to "Conure Bleeding Sydrone", which is thought to be caused by a lack of Vitamin K, which is found in foods like broccoli. Cages/supplies: Conures are active and playful birds, who need a large cage to clamber around in. A large cockatiel cage will do for the small conures, the others will need a good-sized parrot cage. Be careful where you place those perches; if those long conure tails rub against the bars the tail feathers will become very ragged. Give your conure lots of toys, it will use them with gusto. They like toys they can destoy, but make sure there's no small parts they can swallow or openings where they could catch a claw or beak. Your conure will also appreciate a large playstand, again, equipped with lots of toys.

The conure is a remarkable bird, popular because of their beauty and intelligence. They are easily tamed and very social, quite active and they love to learn tricks. Most conures can learn a few words though their voices are high pitched and so what they are saying is often unclear. They are hardy birds that rarely get sick.
A single bird will tame quickly and soon learn new tricks. They like to preen and be preened, and just enjoy your company in general. Males and females make equally good pets.

    BLUE CROWN CONURES
    Exceptional Pet Birds
    by Anne Johnson
Blue Crown Conures (Aratinga acuticaudata) are in the Artinga family of Conures. Other common names are the Sharp Tailed Conure or the Blue Headed Conure. There are 2 other sub-species; Aratinga haemorrhous and Aratinga neumanni. The natural range of Blue Crown Conures extends to several countries in South America that include: Columbia, eastern and south west Brazil, Venezuela, northern Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In there native habitat Blue Crown's have been known to allow humans to get quite close. Life expectancy is approximately 30-40 years. They are one of the larger species of Conures weighing between 150-180 grams. Length from head to tail is appx. 14.5 inches. Coloring is predominately green , with pale olive under the wings. The head, including the forehead, crown, lores, ear coverts and cheeks are dull royal blue. The eyes are surrounded by a bare white patch of skin and the iris is reddish-orange. The upper wing coverts are chestnut-brown, and the tail is green while the lateral tail feather are brownish red with golden olive tips. The upper mandible is horn colored with a black, sharply pointed tip and the lower mandible is solid black. The legs are pinkish grey. Juvenile birds have less of the blue coloration on the head and the mandible is completely horn colored. Although they are not one of the more colorful species of parrot, they more than make up for it with their endearing personality.

Conures - Genus Aratinga
by Terri Leinneweber
This article originally appeared in SQUAWK, the newsletter of the Big Apple Bird Association and is reprinted with permission. Six genera of parakeets are generally classified as conures. They were previous classified as genus Conurus (from the Greek: Kone (cone) and Ourus (tail-bearing), which translated as having a cone-shaped tail. Their scientific classification has changed, but the name "conure" has stayed. There are many species of Aratinga conures "Ara" from the genus' similarity to macaws (Genus Ara) and "tinga," a diminutive, so that Aratinga literally means "little macaw." The number of species and subspecies of Aratinga varies according to the source consulted. According to the on-line version of Encyclopedia Britannica , the Britannica Home Page on the Internet, there are about 45 species of conures, broken into about 7 genera of which Aratinga is one. According to Joseph Forshaw in the third edition of

NANDAY CONURES
The Nanday Conure Parrot is of the Nandayus genus of Conures and is sometimes called the Black-hooded Parakeet because of the cap of black feathers on the top of their head. They are often mistaken for Black-capped Conures because of the black cap and beaks, however, the Black-capped Conure is much smaller than the Nanday . The Nanday will reach a mature size of eleven to twelve inches and weigh a little over five ounces and will live for about 25 years.
The Nanday Conure has a light blue chest and bluish green flight feathers tipped with a deep navy blue, with bright red thigh feathers.
Nanday Conures acclimate quickly to a new environment and they are very sociable with other species. If you currently have a Sun Conure or a Green-cheek Conures , your Nanday Conure will get along fine with them. In the wild, they often live alongside Monk Parakeets in their native countries of Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Mato Grosso and Chaco Formosa. There are also newly introduced wild colonies of Nanday Conures in the eastern and southern portions of the United States.

Most texts show the gold-capped, jenday and sun conures to be three distinct species of the same genus, named Aratinga . This arrangement shows the relationship between the three to be no different than the relationship between the sun conure and the mitred conure. To the majority of aviculturists who have worked with suns, jendays and gold caps, however, it is obvious that a much closer relationship exists between these three conures than just the genus name Aratinga would imply.
Gold-Capped Conure ( Aratinga auricapilla
The gold-capped conure ( Aratinga auricapilla ) is a medium-sized conure from southeastern Brazil. Gold caps were imported in limited quantities during a short period of time before it was realized that some countries were exporting birds originally captured in Brazil (a country that does not allow export). Fortunately, a reasonable number of these original imports were purchased by competent aviculturists.
These birds have proven to be reliable and prolific breeders in captivity. Indeed, we at Voren's Aviaries have produced over 1,000 gold caps, jendays and suns over a period of 15 years. They are usually willing to nest at any time of the year if the conditions are right, but they will not begin a new round of nesting if the weather is too hot. They have been known to nest up to four times per year. The number of clutches per year is highly dependent on how long the babies are left in the nest before being pulled for hand-raising. The usual clutch size is three, but four chicks are not uncommon. Hand-raised babies make excellent pets, and gold caps have by far the best pet personality of the gold cap, jenday and sun conure group. They are especially sought after by pet shops that have had experiences with them. This is because they tend to maintain their tameness without handling longer than either the jenday or sun conures.
