The Sun Conure
By John C. Tyson
Active and colorful, sun conures make excellent pets. They are easy to maintain, and can entertain their owners and themselves for hours. The sun conure is easily bred in captivity. These wonderful little birds tame easily, can learn to speak several words and are known for their engaging personalities. Like A Sunset A flock of birds flying across an evening horizon was once said to have resembled a beautiful sunset. Hence, the name sun conure was assigned to the species. Their body color possesses a deep yellow-orange glow with a distinct resemblance to gold. Their amazingly brilliant blend of yellow, orange, red, blue and green colors means they outshine most other birds in the looks department. Sun conures are approximately 12 inches in length. They live as long as 15 years and are hardy and reliable breeders. As a pet, the sun conure possesses a multifaceted personality that will delight the experienced bird owner and pique the curiosity of the inexperienced nonbird person. They can best be described as playful, inquisitive, active and curious. They love attention and closeness from their owners.

About Pyrrhura Conures Pyrrhura Conures are beautiful, feathered gems with an inquisitive nature and a seemingly endless amount of energy. These entertaining little birds have big bird attitudes and combine the playful nature of the larger, more vocal Conures with the strong, independent, often dominant manner of Macaws.
As a group, Pyrrhura Conures can be found all over South America as well as Costa Rica and Panama in Central America. They are forest dwellers for the most part and seem most comfortable playing and feeding high in the forest canopy. They are strong, swift flyers, gregarious, and sometimes quite raucous. Their wild diet consists of seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, some insects and their larvae. In captivity, most species of Pyrrhura Conures make enthusiastic and prolific breeders given the right environment.

    Description
    • This species is considered to be one of the most spectacularly colored species of parrots. Younger birds have much more green, and their brighter colors appear over a period of about 6-8 months. The full adult yellow coloration on the chest, head and back is reached in two years. Sun conures normally sleep inside their nest boxes. Babies sometimes even sleep on the bottom of their cage with their feet up. A sleeping box is recommended for them. It is similar to a nest box with a perch inside and no bottom.
    • Not only are they brilliantly colored, but they make wonderful pets. They are like kittens with feathers often rolling around with each other or wrestling with you. Their antics are very entertaining to watch as well. Suns are known as loud birds. It is possible to train the birds to be more quiet. A routine is very important. Ours are only loud when they see us and think it is time to play or eat. We have sixteen sun conures plus youngsters.

The Feather Tree Yellow-Sided GREEN-CHEEKED Conure
For more questions about the Pyrrhura family of conures, please consider the purchase of our informative video . This will answer most questions.

p hoto by Gail J. Worth (Pyrrhura molinae/Pyrrhura hypoxantha) In the mid 1980s while working in a quarantine station in Los Angeles, Ca., I first came upon the Yellow-Sided Conure. I was banding a group of Green-Cheeked Conures imported from Argentina when I noticed two brightly colored conures in the group with the others. After referencing these birds in Parrots Of The World, I learned that Forshaw questioned if the Yellow-Sided were a separate species and not just a sub-species of the Green-Cheeked Conure.
The Yellow-Sided Conure, while similar in color to the Green-Cheeked on the back and tail, differs greatly in the coloration of the breast feathers, feet and facial feathers. The term "yellow-sided" is actually in reference to the sides of the breast area. Brightly colored yellow and green, they differ from the solid green of the normal colored Green- Cheeked. The center of the breast and abdomen area is a bright red to yellow variation of color and the throat and facial feathers are a light, white gray color. The feet are pink in juveniles, turning gray with age.
I purchased these two birds, which I learned were females. To prove that they were in fact naturally occuring color mutations of the Green-Cheeked, I paired one bird with a Green-Cheeked male and the other with a male Painted Conure. I had previously seen offspring producd from a Green-Cheeked/Painted Conure cross and used this as my comparison. The

    Sun Conure
    Aratinga solstitialis
The intense coloration of sunshine yellow, orange, green and blue make the Sun Conure one of the most popular birds. A stocky bird about 13 inches from beak to tip of tail with a call that has been termed as boisterous. They are not as loud as a Nanday Conure but they don't talk as well either. A hand raised Sunnie can be one of the most devoted and affectionate pets. However at breeding time they will leave you for a mate of their own species. One of the most prolific of the Aratinga Conure group they are capable of producing many clutches in one season which can not be pinned down to a specific month. I have had some begin in January and go right on through to December producing babies two to five at a time. They are easy to raise but in the past few years they have become available in large quantities and thereby the supply is far greater than the demand. Here at Hideaway Farms we pride ourselves in producing for sale unrelated pairs that will produce for many years as well as the cute and clownish pet. The Sunnie can breed as early as two years but a lot of those who breed that young have a first clutch that is infertile. Parent raised or hand raised I have found no difference in their ability to breed and produce.

    A neat training article.......
Hey everyone, here's a must have article for all novice parrot owners out there. Teaching your bird to "Step-Up" or the command, "Up, are crucial to you interacting well with your pet bird. If you can't create the bond necessary for your bird to step up onto your hand or forearm, then you're probably going to have quite a few problems further down the road. The article below is by a lady named Nora Caterino. She trains parrots to talk, perch, etc. She has much experience in the field and can probably point you in the right direction in regards to a problem you're having if I can't. I hope you enjoy the article:
How to Quickly and Easily Teach Your Parrot the 'up' Command!
    Author: Nora Caterino
The "Up" command is the very first behavior you should teach your parrot. Whether you have a tame, loving, hand-fed baby that is just weaned or you have an older, untamed parrot, the process is still important. It's a question of good manners!
Of course, the process for teaching the behavior to a hand-fed, young bird is much, much easier and quicker than teaching an untamed bird. It is, however, nonetheless necessary.

Small South American parrots, Blue-crowned conures (Aratinga a. acuticaudata) in the wild are found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Uruguay, and Venezuela. When the exportation of wild caught parrots ended during the early 1990s, domestic breeding programs were established in the United States for the many conure species that had been previously brought into the country. Once trapped by the thousands in their native locales and exported in great numbers, Blue-crown conures adapted successfully to domestic breeding situations. Handfed and hand-tamed Blue-crowned conure babies make exceptionally good pets. Thought to be one of the most intelligent of all conures, the Blue-crown is quieter and of a gentler temperament than some of the other Aratinga species. There are several subspecies within the genus, including the Bolivian Blue-crowned conure (Aratinga a. neumanni), the Venezuelan Blue-crowned conure (Aratinga a. koenigi), and the Margarita conure (Aratinga a. neoxena). The Blue-crowned conure (Aratinga a. acuticaudata) is also often identified as the Sharp-tailed conure. There are slight variations in size, feather coloring, and mandible coloration among the subspecies, but the differences are minimal and can be difficult to spot unless you have several specimens to compare.
