From CentralAmericaInfo
Jump to: navigation search The United Nations annual Human Development survey recently ranked Costa Rica first in Central America and third in Latin America behind Argentina and Uruguay. It has a 96% literacy rate with compulsory education until age fourteen, though education lacks in funding and thus quality, especially in the more remote areas. The country does have an advanced universal health care system exemplified by a life expectancy comparable to the wealthiest nations. Many Ticos lack some of the etiquette with strangers that we take for granted, like not holding a door open for you. Telephone manners are almost comical. When the phone rings, you pick it up and hear a voice asking you, "Quien habla?" (Who is talking?). It throws you off! But face to face, Ticos invariably take time to say hello, shake your hand, and make small talk before entering into any serious discussions. Projecting a good image is very important to Ticos. Other than beggars, Ticos are always well groomed and wearing cleanly pressed new looking clothes and polished shoes. Their fashion sense is derived from North America and Europe. Displaying the newest, smallest, coolest cellular phone is more important than how well it works. Many Ticos can be seen zipping around in an expensive SUV (often on lease), yet their home inside is sparsely decorated.

Home Study Abroad Costa Rica The locals refer to themselves as tico or tica (female). "Tico" comes from the locally popular usage of "tico" diminutive suffixes (eg. 'momentico' instead of 'momentito'). The tico ideal is that of a very friendly, helpful, laid back, unhurried, educated and environmentally aware people, with little worry for deadlines or the "normal" stresses of United States life. Visitors from the United States are often referred to as gringos, which is virtually always congenial in nature. The phrase "Pura Vida" (literally pure life) is a motto ubiquitous in Costa Rica. It encapsulates the pervading ideology of living in peace in a calm, unflustered manner, appreciating a life surrounded by nature and family and friends. Some folk might use maje or mae (sort of "man", actually maje means "dumb") to refer to each other although this might be slightly insulting to other folk. Costa Rica Culture
Costa Rica Tropical is a country of wonderful biodiversity. Its flora and fauna, natural attractions and reputation for preservation attracts nature lovers from the entire world. Political initiatives have made causes to defend the country's image as a tourism destination, making Costa Rica Tropical one of the best areas to experience the tropics naturally and with minimum impact The cultural action in Costa Rica Tropical has simply begun to prosper in the last 100 years, due to a past European influence erasing most of the aboriginal culture. This conduces to the country being observed more for its natural beauty and friendly natives than for its culture. Positioned in between Nicaragua and Panama in America Central, Costa Rica Tropical limits both the Pacific and the Caribbean Sea . A sequence of volcanic mountain chains runs from the Nicaraguan limit in the north west to the Panamanian limit in the south east. This divides to Costa Rica in two and leaves a high altitude plain in the interior, with coastal lowlands on both places. The diverse coastal scenery provides a multitude of outdoor activities for everybody. San Jose : The capital at first sight provides an energetic ambiance with noisy vendors, streets, and drivers. However below this surface you will find a more cultured city with quiet sites to eat, drink and meet and many museums displaying everything from paintings and valuable stones to colonization memories and archeological findings.

Costa Rica Culture, Money and Government
Costa Rica is bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panamá to the south-east. To the west is the Pacific Ocean and to the East the Caribbean Sea.
Three mountain ranges divide the country from north to south creating very different micro climates on each side. The Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range starts at the border of Nicaragua and continues all the way to Arenal Volcano. The Central Volcanic Mountain range surrounds the central valley. The Poas and Irazú Volcanoes are part of this mountain range. The third one is the Talamanca Mountain Range which extends into Panama to the south east, and includes the highest peak in the country, Chirripó (3,820 meters /12,530 ft.)
The Central Valley is a fertile plateau located in the center of the country and surrounded by mount ains. Today this is the area where most of the population live concentrated in the capital city of San José and also the cities of Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago. Climate Located in a tropical latitude, the country has only two seasons: the dry season from December to April and the rainy season from May to November. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica does not have a defined rainy season (be prepared for rain or sun at any time). In San Jose temperatures range from 15 C. /60 F. during a cool night in December to 28 C. /82 F. on a hot afternoon. Temperatures change with the altitude and not with the time of year; you'll find cooler temperatures in the mountains. At sea level you'll find the warmest temperatures up to 30-35 C. / 85-95 F. temperatures.

Officially the Republic of Costa Rica, Costa Rica is a country in Central America. It is bordered to the north by Nicaragua, to the south east by Panama, to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Caribbean Sea.
According to the CIA World Factbook, Costa Rica is a Central American success story. Amid the political upheavals in majority of Central American countries, Costa Rica has had, since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence marring its democratic development. In terms of economy, Costa Rica maintains a large agricultural sector and at the same time manages strong technology and tourism based industries.
