In 1502, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture.
The small landowners' relative poverty, the lack of a large indigenous labor force, the population's ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and Costa Rica's isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes all contributed to the development of an autonomous and individualistic agrarian society. An egalitarian tradition also arose. This tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the 19th-century introduction of banana and coffee cultivation and consequent accumulations of local wealth.
Costa Rica joined other Central American provinces in 1821 in a joint declaration of independence from Spain. Although the newly independent provinces formed a Federation, border disputes broke out among them, adding to the region's turbulent history and conditions. Costa Rica's northern Guanacaste Province was annexed from Nicaragua in one such regional dispute. In 1838, long after the Central American Federation ceased to function in practice, Costa Rica formally withdrew and proclaimed itself sovereign.

Costa Rica History BACK TO HOME PAGE ( Back to Costa Rica General Information ) Mystery shrouds pre-Columbian Costa Rica: few archaeological monuments and no proof of a written language have ever been discovered. Recorded history tends to begin with Christopher Columbus, who stayed for 17 days in 1502, and was so impressed by the gold decorations worn by the friendly locals he promptly dubbed the country Costa Rica, 'the rich coast'. Despite the lure of untold wealth, colonisation was slow to take hold and it took nearly 60 years for the Spanish settlers to make a dent in the tangled jungle. Once the process had started, however, Costa Rica, like its similarly colonised neighbours, suffered the effects of European invasion. The indigenous population did not have the necessary numbers to resist the Spanish, and their populations dwindled quickly because of susceptibility to European diseases.
Pacheco began his term promising to eliminate the public debt within four years. He launched a conservationist platform banning new oil drilling and mining and proposed legislation guaranteeing citizens the right to a healthy environment. It didn't take long before the sheen paled. A campaign finance scandal clouded his presidency, leading some opponents to demand his resignation, and it became unclear if he could weather this storm through to the end of his term in 2006.

    Independence
Costa Rica became independent from Spain on September 15th 1821. See our picture Gallery of the celebration of the Independence Day . Although Costa Ricans were not aware of this situation until at least a month later. It briefly became part of the Mexican empire, then a state within the Central American United Provinces. The first elected head of state was Juan Mora Fernández, who governed from 1824 to 1833. during his time in office, export of coffee, introduced in 1808 from Cuba began in modest amounts. The rest of the 19th Century saw a steady increase in coffee exports, and this turned Costa Rica from an extremely poor and struggling Country into a more successful and worldly one. Inevitably, some of the coffee growers became relatively rich, and a class structure began to emerge. In 1849, a successful coffee grower, Juan Rafael Mora, became president and governed for 10 years. Mora's presidency is remembered both for economic and cultural growth, and for a somewhat bizarre military incident that has earned a place in every Coasta Rican child's history book. In June 1855, the US filibuster Willam Walker arrived in Nicaragua with the aim of conquering Central America and converting it into a slaving territory, then using the slaves to build a Nicaraguan canal to join the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Walker defeated the Nicaraguans and marched on to Costa Rica, which he entered more or less unopposed, reaching a hacienda at Santa Rosa (now a National Park in north-western Costa Rica)

Home Study Abroad Costa Rica In Pre-Columbian times the Indigenous people in what is now known as Costa Rica were part of the Intermediate Area located between the Meso-american and Andean cultural regions. This has recently been updated to include the influence of the Isthmo-Colombian area in the south-Atlantic region of the country, defined by the presence of groups that spoke Chibchan languages. It is still unknown if any of these groups created the famous stone spheres of Costa Rica, between 200 BC and AD 1600. Costa Rica Information : Inside
    History
Geography Politics Administrative Divisions ... Culture Conquest During the 16th century the area found itself with a quickly diminishing workforce. The indigenous population, slaves at the time, were falling ill to many of the diseases brought by the colonists, or dying in resistance battles. Also, the lack of abundant mineral resources and the fact that the richest soils were found deep in the heart of the country (the Central Valley) severely hindered the colonization effort. All these circumstances made Costa Rica, the southernmost province in the Captaincy General of Guatemala, the poorest and most irrelevant region. However the colonizers that braved the hard trip in the Central Valley had established a provincial capital Cartago. Independence In 1821, the winds of independence had blown in from the north. The United States of America and Mexico had won their independence recently and in the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, Guatemala City, protests broke out demanding independence. On September 15th, 1821 they declared their independence from the Spanish Empire. At the time, several present-day Mexican states and most of the Central American countries belonged to the Captaincy, so in order to send the news to all the states, a horse messenger was sent down through Central America.

We don't make our experiences, our experiences make us. As German proprietors of both Equis, and active in tourism for decades, we see ourselves as cosmopolitan. We have gathered the touristic treasures of this world in our many journeys, and have created something special out of them.
We have ourselves been able to experience, on all five continents, how one should entertain and spoil guests, how one conceptualises hotels and facilities so they harmoniously blend into the environment, and how one can offer a service that truly responds to the individual desires of guests.
And we have also been able to experience for ourselves the things that an hotelier shouldn't do. We have let this wealth of experience influence the conception of both Equis.
No wonder, then, that the Equis are the result of lingering memories, touristic inspirations and improvements on the most beautiful hotels in the world.

    Costa Rica History
Columbus first saw this portion of Central America in 1502 during his last trip to the New World. But Spanish settlement did not begin until the mid-1500s because early expeditions were beset by disease and local resistance from the Guaymi people. The Spanish did find some gold in the area - inspiring the name Costa Rica (Rich Coast) - but not the large reserves they sought.
Colonization proceeded slowly along the east coast until the Spanish finally moved to the fertile valleys and mesas of the interior, known as the Central Valley. Geography kept the plantation system, with its attendant slavery, from developing in Costa Rica. Instead, the colonists gathered near the indigenous communities and built ranches and farms. The towns grew into distinct provinces that, even today, retain their own characters. Such independence and self-reliance are thought to be the reasons democracy came more naturally to Costa Rica than to its neighbors when the country gained its independence in the early 1820s. Brief civil wars erupted among the major cities, but the more liberal forces of San Jose emerged victorious, moving the country toward fair, democratic elections in the late 1800s
Costa Ricatake pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit.

    Brief History of Costa Rica
At the time Christopher Columbus came to Costa Rica in 1502, there were estimated to be only around 20 thousand inhabitants in this region; there were no major civilizations prior to the influx of European influences. Today, only 1% of the population of Costa Rica is indigenous to the time before Columbus. Initially, even the Spanish colonization of Costa Rica fell behind the rest of the West because of the lack of gold and environmental challenges. Even after Costa Rica was colonized, its way of life differed from that of its Spanish colonial neighbors in that is was known more as "rural democracy" because of the absence of an oppressed mestizo class, due to the lack of intermarrying with native peoples. After some political turmoil and periods of military rule, General Tomas Guardia took control of the government in 1870. He is best known for his educational, military, and tax reforms.
