http://www.knit911.com/crochet911.html
Changing yarn colors or starting a new ball or skein of yarn If you are simply joining a new ball or skein of yarn in the same color, it's best to do it at the beginning of a row because it is easier to hide the tail of the yarn. Simply wrap the new yarn around the hook and draw up a loop and continue crocheting. Leave a 6" long tail of yarn to, tie a loose knot to hold the yarn in place. When you complete your project, untie the knot and weave in the ends. This also applies when you have to change yarn in the middle of a row. When a pattern says to change colors, it is made this way: Work the last stitch to final two loops on the hook, draw up a loop with the new color and complete the stitch. If you are following a color chart or crocheting a multicolor pattern, yarn can be carried along the back of the work if the repeat is fairly close together. If yarn is carried more than 3 or 4 stitches, carried yarn should be caught into the work every 2 or 3 stitches.
Crocheting in the round
There are two forms of crocheting in rounds. One forms a tube, such as working in rounds to make leg warmers. The second forms a flat circular surface such as a doily or tablemat.

30. Crocheting In Circles - For Dummies
The center ring is the foundation for all crocheted designs that are worked in rounds — just like the foundation chain you use when working in rows.

Home Hobbies Crocheting in Circles
Crocheting in Circles
Adapted From: Crocheting For Dummies Printer-ready version To begin a design that you work in rounds, you first have to create a center ring.
Working stitches in the hole
The most common method for creating a center ring is to make a chain and close it into a ring with a slip stitch. You would use this method when your first round is made up of a fairly large number of stitches and you need the room in which to fit them, or if the design calls for an obvious hole in the center. The following steps show you how to create a simple center ring of 6 chain stitches: 1. Chain (ch) 6. 2. Insert your hook into the first chain stitch you made, forming a ring (see Figure 1).
Figure 1: Making the center-ring chain.
3. Yarn over your hook (yo). 4. Draw the yarn through the stitch and through the loop on your hook, as Figure 2a shows. Your center ring is now complete (see Figure 2b).
Figure 2: Completing the center ring.
The number of stitches in the beginning chain determines the size of the hole that the center ring creates as well as how many stitches you can work into the center ring. Make sure the ring is large enough to accommodate the number of stitches that you'll be working in it. On the other hand, make sure it's not so long that you have a big loose hole in the center. When you're working a pattern, it tells you how many chain stitches you need for the proper size center ring. After you make the center ring, you're ready for the first round. Just as when you're beginning a new row, you first have to determine the number of turning chain stitches that you need in order to bring your hook up to the proper level for the next round of stitches. (The number of turning chain stitches you need depends on the stitch you're about to work.) Now here's the really easy part about working with a center ring: Instead of inserting your hook into the actual stitches of the center ring, you just go through the center hole. The following steps show how to work single crochet stitches into the center ring:

Treats
Over the holidays, I did manage to find a new recipe to add to my recipe box - Jam Filled Butter Cookies . These are a huge hit at our house - just as written (I almost never make a recipe exactly as written, even when baking), and they never last more than 24 hours. I know this is a classic but it can be a challenge finding "your" favorite recipe, even so. :)
Jam Filled Butter Cookies
3/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
2 egg yolks
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup fruit preserves, any flavor
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar and egg yolks. Mix in flour a little bit at a time until a soft dough forms. Roll dough into 1 inch balls. If dough is too soft, refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes. Place balls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Use your finger or an instrument of similar size to make a well in the center of each cookie. Fill the hole with 1/2 teaspoon of preserves.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown on the bottom. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.

Free patterns: head and waist wraps from Berroco
Berroco , the popular yarn company, releases several new yarns just about every season. Because they're a leader in the category of fashion yarns that is, those you might use to make a special-occasion top with a bit of flash, or a fancy scarf that isn't necessarily intended to keep you warm their products are often complex, and relatively expensive and delicate. It might not be practical to make a full garment out of some of them. Fortunately, Berroco is also known for their large archive of free patterns . Their most recent releases are small fashion accessories that you can make out of delicious yarns like glittering Lumina and textural Seduce ... without breaking your budget. My two favorite patterns from the latest update are Lurema and Scarfina . A close look suggests that they're actually essentially the same pattern, written for two different yarns: both are long (64"), slender (5") lace scarves. Lurema is shown as a head-wrap, while Scarfina is depicted as a belt, but you should be able to wear either of them either way: just choose your favorite yarn and run with it.

Vintage Crochet
I'm so pleased to be a part of this beautiful book, Vintage Crochet: 30 Gorgeous Designs for Home * Garden * Fashion* Gifts . My friend Susan Cropper, the owner of Loop , a beautiful yarn store in London, here has collected designs from some of my favorite crochet designers (including my friends fellow Pacific Northwesterners Kristeen Griffin-Grimes and Leigh Radford ), and I am honored to be included. I "met" Susan over the phone, two years ago now when she called to order my crochet patterns to carry in her shop, and she has been an enthusiastic and generous supporter of my work. In the first conversation we had, she asked if I would design a grown-up version of the Cecily baby cardigan , and so it is here in the book now, named Millie, done in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran and decorated with Liberty cotton-lawn ties. ... History of Crocheting No one is sure when and where crochet started. The word comes from a French word for hook. According to crocheter Annie Potter, "The modern art of true crochet as we know it today was developed during the 16th century. It became known as 'crochet lace' in France and 'chain lace' in England." She reports that in 1916 Walter Edmund Roth visited descendants of the Guiana Indians and found examples of true crochet. Personal Crocheting Experience Recognition includes invitations to participate in numerous national events to exhibit intricate crocheted items and demonstrate the art of crocheting. Engagements have included independent evaluations and consulting assignments, work in Christian and other non-for-profit activities, and participation programs sponsored by United States government agencies and the States of Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Mexico. Numerous awards and recognition for crochet work received for quality, complexity, and creativity. June 13-15, 2008: Texas Folklife Festival, San Antonio, Texas
