Font Font Abdominal problems are common, and they affect millions of adults and children every year. In fact, many physicians attribute mysterious abdominal pain to the reason why many of their offices are full. Although doctor visits for abdominal pain are widespread, generally these non-life threatening illnesses eventually cease on their own. Severe stomach aches are caused by a number of factors. Gas, constipation, menstrual cramps, and stomach flu top the list. Of course, some also suffer from other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and acid reflux which are not serious, but may require medical attention. Another gastrointestinal problem that may cause severe abdominal pain is Crohn's disease.

Facts about Crohn's Disease. Just after Christmas 2004 a man came for healing who I'd never met before. He said he'd had Crohn's Disease for about 20 years and was "living with it"; his words. Just after the New Year, he'd had a flare up which was so bad his medication wasn't touching it. My first reaction was most likely the stereotypical one, too much merrymaking and unfamiliar food. I know that would definitely have been my own reason for a bad tummy. The man (we'll call him Frank) was facing surgery, but wanted to try healing first.
What is Crohn's Disease?
Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. Crohn's Disease can affect the digestive system anywhere along the entire gastrointestinal tract - from the lips, the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, the duodenum, the jejunem, the ileum, the ileocecal valve, the cecum, the ascending or right colon, the transverse colon, the descending or left colon, the sigmoid colon, and the rectum, to the anus.
Crohn's Disease is not dissimilar to Ulcerative Colitis and much of this basic Crohn's Disease article also applies to Ulcerative Colitis. Both conditions are known jointly as Inflammatory Bowel Disease - IBD.

Background This is one half of inflammatory bowel disease, its partner is ulcerative colitis. The presenting symptoms are varied including fever, mild diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The attacks may be episodic lasting weeks to months. Bleeding, especially in patients with colon involvement, may occur. Crohn's disease differs from ulcerative colitis in being able to involve the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus. In addition, a number of organ systems may be involved (see clinical presentations). OUTLINE Epidemiology Disease Associations Pathogenesis Laboratory/Radiologic/ ... Internet Links

    Crohn's Disease
The symptoms of Crohn's disease, including the recurring attacks of inflammation resemble some of the symptoms of the illness called colitis , in this disease abdominal cramping and a diarrhea with a frequent and persistent urge to pass stool sets in because of the inflammation. Emotional anxiety and vexation are often brought on as the diarrhea shows no signs of abating. In sufferers of the disease a poor appetite and weight loss are frequently seen. Any part of the digestive system may be affected by the inflammation-including the mouth and the stomach; however it is usually the small intestine that is the most severely afflicted in the course of the disease. Deficiencies of essential minerals and nutrients are often the result of the inflammation in the small intestine, largely because it is the site responsible for the absorption of many nutrients, when compared with colitis the deficiencies in nutrients is greater in this disease. The disease has a tendency to affect young people the most, and as observed in other types of inflammatory bowel diseases , symptomatic attacks may range from very mild to extremely severe cases.

    Information on CrohnÕs Disease
    Description
An idiopathic inflammatory disease of the small intestine and colon involving all layers of the bowel. It is a slowly progressive and recurrent disease with a tendency to obstruct the bowel, fistulize, and involve adjacent structures in the inflammation. Occasionally occurs at all other sites in the GI tract.
Genetics: 15% of patients have first-degree relatives with inflammatory bowel disease; All monozygotic twins develop the disease in similar fashion.
    Causes
CrohnÕs disease is often idiopathic (of unkown cause). It is aggravated by bacterial infection; the inflammatory cascade, and by smoking cessation. Risk factors for CrohnÕs disease include cigarette smoking. Specific nutrient deficiencies are also common: B12, fat soluble vitamins, and folate. Conventional Labs Standard lab tests inclde erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), CBC (anemia is common), Albumin (decreased in severe cases), Serum electrolytes, B12 and folate levels.

Most often IBD is classified as: ulcerative colitis causes ulceration and inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Crohn's disease an inflammation that extends into the deeper layers of the intestinal wall, and also may affect other parts of the digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cause similar symptoms that often resemble other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome. The correct diagnosis may take some time. Inflammatory bowel disease may also be referred to as colitis, enteritis, ileitis, and proctitis.
    Crohn's Disease

Although Crohn's Disease is a difficult disorder, you should not keep yourself from living the best life possible because you suffer from this disorder. You should continue in your life as you would without Crohn's, although a few more precautions may be necessary. When traveling, this will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. The first thing you should do, whether you are traveling abroad or close to home, is locate a doctor in the area you will be visiting. There are several organizations available to utilize in your search or you can simply ask your doctor for referrals. If you are taking prescription medication, you should be sure to take plenty for the duration of your trip. You should also keep it with you when you travel on the plane to avoid it being lost in the heaps of luggage. Always keep your medication in its original container and a typed statement from your doctor regarding what medications you are taking and what they are for. You will also need to get copies of all of your prescriptions, including foreign names, in case you have to refill them abroad. However, you should avoid this by carrying enough medication with you, as filling prescriptions in other counties can sometimes be difficult.

The cause of Crohn's disease is still not known. Heredity may have something to do with the disease's occurrence. Food allergies may play a part in the development of the disease. Viral or bacterial infections may also be involved as well as autoimmune disorders (in which the body attacks its own cells, mistaking them to be invading agents). People with Crohn's disease tend to have abnormalities of the immune system, but doctors do not know whether these abnormalities are a cause or result of the disease. Crohn's disease is not caused by emotional distress. Symptoms include chronic diarrhea, pain in the in the middle and lower abdomen, headaches, fever, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, anal cracking, and loss of weight, appetite and energy. Secondary symptoms may include mouth and anal sores and chronic bleeding that may result in anemia. How Is It Diagnosed?
