Click here to print this page Crohn's Disease is a malady causing patchy inflammation of the gastro-intestinal tract. The other major inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is Ulcerative colitis. Whereas Crohn's disease affects the full thickness of the bowel. Ulcerative colitis merely causes inflammation of the lining (mucosa) of the large intestine. At times it is difficult to distinguish the diseases from one another. The cause of both these conditions is not known. Features of Crohn's Disease. The patchy inflammation results in:
  • Ulceration and bleeding from the lining similar to that of ulcerative colitis.(Figure 1.)
Figure 1. Damage to the lining of the colon as seen by colonoscopy. Indistinguishble from Ulcerative Colitis.
Infection with bacteria can cause abscesses and fistulae.(Tunnels between normally unconnected parts of the gut or with the exterior.) (Figure 2.)

    Crohn's Bike Ride
James and I took a break from IOLS last weekend to participate in the Get Your Guts in Gear bike ride for Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis. The ride is intended to spread awareness of these diseases and to raise money for the search for a cure. The ride finished the day before our first wedding anniversary, June 13th. Inside Out Life Story is the product of our life with Crohn's Disease. Crohn's Disease is chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, usually affecting the small intestines and colon. Crohn's and a related disease, ulcerative colitis, are the two main disease categories of a group of illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease. Both diseases involve an abnormal response by the immune system where it attacks healthy intestines. I found out about the bike ride while James was in the hospital with a scary flare-up. I was feeling inspired to get active in the Crohn's community and I saw the ride featured on the CCFA web site . I signed us up, with James’s permission (despite what he now claims) and we began training. Our training did not progress too far, we did two official training rides (25 miles and 45 miles) and then rode our bikes to work a few days a week leading up to the ride. When it was time to begin the ride, I was sure that we could in no way possibly complete this ride. We had not trained enough, James was still on a lot of medicine, the temperature was unexpectedly in the 90s and my tummy hurt. But we showed up and we completed the ride. It was a great experience and we met a lot of amazing people with IBD or with close family with IBD.

Health Home Acute Pain Allergies Chronic Pain ... Stress Reduction Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Diverticulitis are all "diseases of the gut". Millions of people all over the world suffer from these little-understood conditions. On this page We'll outline our theories as to why western medicine is ill-equipped to handle certain aspects of these debilitating, painful conditions. We'll offer hope for not only symptomatic relief but resolution of underlying emotional and psychological co-factors in either producing these conditions or aggravating symptoms. Since Crohn's is a medical condition we can't treat you unless you are exploring or have explored medical options. NLP and hypnosis won't interfere with any traditional treatment but anything like a decrease of medication due to improvement should be done under the advice of a physician. We need to go into a little bit of explanation here. IBD is often thought of as an auto-immune disease. Somehow the immune system may be attacking part of your own body and producing inflammation of the bowels, nausea, pain, diarrhea etc. One of the things we do is work with the immune system - teach it what belongs to it and what is foreign and needs to be defended against.

The FDA has required Hoffmann-La Roche to change their label for Accutane many times. The most recent label states - Inflammatory bowel disease: Accutane has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (including regional ileitis) in patients without a prior history of intestinal disorders. In some instances, symptoms have been reported to persist after Accutane treatment has been stopped. Patients experiencing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or severe diarrhea should discontinue Accutane immediately.
Pursuant to FDA Rules and Regulation, the reporting of Adverse Side Effects is on a voluntary basis. In other words, the doctor, hospital, or other medical person or facility are not required by law to report an adverse side effect from a drug. The FDA reported that perhaps only one in one hundred side effects ever get reported. One could only imagine about how many serious Adverse Side Effects there are from taking Accutane, that have never been reported to anyone!

    CROHN'S DISEASE
    What is Crohn's Disease ?
Crohn's disease is a condition involving inflammation in the bowel. It can affect any part of the gut from mouth to anus. However, it most commonly affects the small bowel near the appendix and the colon near the rectum (back passage. The main function of the small bowel is to absorb food, minerals and vitamins. When this part of the bowel is inflamed, absorption fails and various deficiencies may eventually occur. The colon's function is to absorb water from the bowel contents and form the more solid stools (faeces). When this part of the bowel is inflamed, liquid stools (diarrhoea) occur. The main symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss and generally feeling ill. The pain varies from mild discomfort to colicky pain, usually after food. The stools may be pale and float, due to all the fat which cannot be absorbed. Sometimes they contain blood, if the lower colon or rectum is affected.
How does Crohn's Disease occur ?
The cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. There are unproven theories that it is due to infection. The condition causes small ulcers in the gut which may penetrate deep into the tissue. The ulceration is not continuous. An area of normal bowel is often found between a couple of abnormal areas. Parts of the bowel may become narrowed by scarring, or loops of bowel can stick together from the inflammation. Both these problems can cause blockage of the bowel which causes pain and sometimes vomiting.

Fact Sheet: Chrohn's Disease Definition: Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory process primarily involving the intestinal tract. Although it may involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the part of the small intestine (ileum) and/or the large intestine (colon and rectum) Crohn's disease is a chronic condition and may recur at various times over a lifetime. Some people have long periods of remission, sometimes for years, when they are free of symptoms. There is no way to predict when a remission may occur or when symptoms will return. Symptoms:
    • Cramping-abdominal pain
    • Diarrhea
    • Fever
    • Weight loss
    • Bloating
    • Anal pain or drainage
    • Skin Lesions
    • Rectal abscess
    • Fissure
    • Joint pain
Because Crohn's disease can affect any part of the intestine, symptoms may vary greatly from patient to patient. Not all patients experience all of these symptoms, and some may experience none of them. Treatment: There is no "cure" for Crohn's disease, but medical therapy provides a means to treat early Crohn's disease and relieve its symptoms. In more advanced or complicated cases of Crohn's disease, surgery may be recommended. Life Modifications: It is particularly important to maintain good nutrition and health with a balanced diet, adequate exercise, and a positive attitude. Stress, anxiety, and extreme emotions may aggravate symptoms of the disorder, but are not believed to cause it or make it worse.

    The 3 Basics My Story
"There are Many Symptoms but only a Few Causes"
    My Story
"Increase Your I.Q., Awareness and Over All Well Being. See Below." Chron's Disease - What is it? Is there a cure? Medical Doctors sure don't have one! Crohns Disease is said to be an inflammatory disease of the intestines. But what Crohns Disease really is, is a symptom. Your body is trying to tell you something. If you have Crohns Disease or Crohns Disease symptoms then you need to address the cause. In my studies of having and maintaining good health there are basically two major things that cause abnormal symptoms. (See Also: The 3 Basics You should also check out our Acid Alkaline Forming Page This may help you to determine a Crohns Disease Diet.) What you allow to go into your body and how you get harmful elements out. Your body is just like a car, you put fuel in and you produce energy and you expel waste like a cars exhaust.
You can go through all the things that Crohns Disease might be but it is no more and no less than a symptom. You must address the cause of Crohns Disease not the symptom. In Dr. Hulda Clarks book "The Cure for All Diseases" she states that there are only two main causes of disease, "Parasites and/or Pollutants". (This is a very good book to pick up although it may be a little shocking.)

Crohn's Disease: When Proctection Against Bacteria is Not Sufficient Due to Lack of Weapons
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease , affecting most commonly the mucous membranes of the ower part of the small bowel and the colon. It affects approximately 150,000 people in Germany; five new cases per 100,000 inhabitants are diagnosed each year. The cause of the disease is unknown; genetic and environmental factors have been suggested to play a role.
