Rivera ca. 1910 Diego Rivera : Master Cubist By 1913 Diego Rivera was fascinated by the early cubist movement, led by celebrated Spaniard Pablo Picasso, and started experimenting with cubism himself. By 1914 Diego was viewed as one of the more interesting members of the Cubist movement, one of the avant garde . Diego was a great admirer of Pablo Picasso, and they became close friends... Diego confides that in Paris, when they were by themselves, they would have the best of times saying things about other painters they would never tell anybody else!!! Portrait of Jacques Lipschitz, 1914 The sculptor Jacques Lipschitz, The Man in the Sweather, was a close friend of Diego, and with him in Mallorca and Barcelona at the beginning of WWI. Notice the Mexican color paterns by the shoulders. Paisaje de Mallorca, 1914 Portrait of Two Women, 1914 Sailor at Breakfast, 1914 The Cafe Terrace, 1915 The Cafe Terrace (1915), shows a delightful Parisian cafe table, filled with goodies such as a sundae and possibly a box of fine cigars! The balance and textures are outstanding! Still Life with Gray Bowl, 1915

An overview of the history of Pablo Picasso s cubism.

Pablo Picasso cubism
marriage analytical cubism . Analytical cubism lasted until 1911 and is characterized by monochrome, relatively unemotional paintings that depict rather uneventful subjects, such as still lives. Many paintings of analytical cubism are faceted (see for instance Georges Braque's "Mandola", below), a technique that allows the artist to disect and reconstruct his subject in a way that depicts it's essence rather than it's appearance. Although largely abstract, the faceted technique still produces a recognizable image of the subject.
The technique of faceting originated from Georges Braques - it was his way to depict a natural object. Picasso didn't so much facet natural objects, but used the geometry of Braques' faceted paintings to create a style that was abstract in essence, almost pure abstract art. So cubism refers to the styles of both Braques and Picasso, although Braques' cubism has a recognizable figurative objective, while Picasso's cubism served as the link between Braques' style and pure the abstract art that followed from cubism (such as Piet Mondrian and suprematism From 1911 on cubism moved in a direction which is now known as synthetic cubism . In both analytical and synthetic cubism the subject would be fragmented, in analytical cubism giving rise to a crystalline geometry, while in synthetic cubism the fragmentation would be somewhat reduced in size, making the subject more recognizable and less formal. In both styles a subject would be reconstructed in intersecting, sometimes transparent planes.

Over a period of seven years leading up to 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War, Cubism marked a decisive break from representative painting, reflecting a radical fissure in politics, art, and culture.
Led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the Cubist painters pursued an abstract, geometric approach.
Cubist paintings often look as if the subject has been constructed from a hundred or more snapshots, all taken from different angles. Where people are represented, they are sharply angular and feature masks that strongly suggest an African influence.
Familiar objects, such as violins and guitars, are sliced up and the reassembled fragments skewed and rotated; they are often accompanied by lettering and musical notes. Color sometimes remains, though grays and browns predominate.
Using a photograph of an old guitar and a simple background, no special effort was required other than using a high sensor speed (ISO) so that the camera could be hand-held under dim lighting conditions.

Viewing video data along the X-T axis and Y-T axis has appeared in several forms in the literature. The main distinctions this work has is that the cut plane (or cut sphere) used to view the video data can be moved to any angle and position in real-time. This provides an opportunity to interactively explore the video cube from many different angles to get both aesthetically interesting static images as well as motion effects. Currently, a single cut plane or a cut sphere is supported. With the cut plane investigation is like being able to move a window around the video cube to see all sides as well as inside the video data; hence the name video cubism. With the cut sphere, unusual images are seen as a curvature cuts through time and space.

Art History:
Cubism: (1908 - 1920) The Cubist emphasized a flat, two-dimensional surface and rejected the idea that art should imitate nature, refusing traditional techniques such as perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro. Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braques in Paris founded the movement before World War I. The movement is considered to have its roots in the work of Post-Impressionist, Paul Cezanne. It also took from African tribal art, reducing everything to cubes and other geometrical forms. Cubist artists depicted drastically fragmented objects, sometimes showing multiple sides simultaneously. Cubism was the forerunner of abstract art. Archipenko, Alexander - 1887 - 1964

John Mulroy African art has played an important role in the culture and history of the world. It's distinctive characteristics and inspirations have influenced many artists to adapt their own interpretation of the art in their own time period. Characteristics of African art had made its way into many paintings in the Cubist period, among others. If one examines the European avant-garde artistic movement of cubism, founded mainly by Pablo Picasso, they can find many themes adapted from African art.
Cubism is the most influential movement in the history of modern art. It is a complex movement, including not only painters and sculptors, but also musicians and poets. The Cubists introduced entirely new approaches to interpreting form and space. Cubism began in France, where it flourished as a movement between 1907 and 1914. It was headed by the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque
Characteristics of the first phase of Cubism, usually called Analytic Cubism, were the simplification, distortion and emphasis of the forms of objects. Cubism was a reaction again set the formlessness of Impressionism, but the development of Cubism got many ideas from post-Impressionism. Following the trend of the nineteenth-century transcendentalism, the artists believed that "true reality lay in the essential idea and not in its reflection in the material world"

Cubism
The opening of the twentieth century marked a period of economic, social and scientific transformation, which was reflected in Cubism as an artistic movement. The Cubists, with Picasso as their foremost member, expressed a new perception of the world. In more traditional painting, the artist is static before the object or scene depicted; but in Cubist art the painter seems to see and render the subject from all sides at once. Cubism constituted an explosion of perception. In 1901 Picasso's first exhibition in Paris showed the influence of Pointillist painters such as Seurat, and throughout his `Blue Period' and `Pink Period' his work was powerful yet still fairly conventional in style. But in 1907 came the painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon,

Cubism ( Beginning in 1908 ) Cubism is the most radical, innovative, and influential ism of twentieth-century art. It is complete denial of Classical conception of beauty.
Cubism
was the joint invention of two men, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Their achievement was built the foundation of Picasso's early work then developed to a Synthetic Cubism. As the various phases of Cubism emerged from their studios, it became clear to the art world that something of great significance was happening. The radical innovations of the new style confused the public, but the avant-garde saw in them the future of art and new challenge.
Proportions, organic integrity and continuity of life samples and material objects are abandoned. Canvas resembles "a field of broken glass" as one vicious critic noted. This geometrically analytical approach to form and color, and shattering of object in focus into geometrical sharp-edged angular pieces baptized the movement into 'Cubism'. A close look reveals very methodical destruction or rather deconstruction into angular 3-dymensional shaded facets, some of which are caving others convex. Cubism distrusts "whole" images perceived by the retina, considers them artificial and conventional, based on the influence of past art. It rejects these images and recognizes that perspective space is an illusory, rational invention, or a sign system inherited from works of art since the Renaissance.

When Picasso Went Down to Georgia
Nick Bertozzi
By GEORGE GENE GUSTINES Published: May 6, 2007 THE birth of Cubism may not seem like standard fodder for a graphic novel. But the painting breakthrough is at the heart of “The Salon,” by Nick Bertozzi, which quickly moves from art history to murder mystery with the help of a magical blue absinthe. Along for the ride are early-20th-century Modernist heavies like Braque, Picasso and Satie. And just as those artists provoked controversy in their day, the graphic novel has led to a skirmish about its depiction of nudity. Skip to next paragraph Nick Bertozzi Mr. Bertozzi has drawn a mug shot of Picasso. “Though I took several art history classes in college, I never felt as though I fully understood the tenets of Cubism,” Mr. Bertozzi, 36, said in a recent interview over lunch in Midtown Manhattan. “I thought that doing a comic about Picasso and Braque and how they developed the artistic movement would be an opportunity to really understand how painting changed after 1907.
