Pablo Picasso: Cubism - A Revolution of Spatial Presentation in Artistic Expression (with parallels in cartography)
By Scott Crosier
Back to Classics Background
-Pablo Picasso
Cubism, the artistic expression that forefathered all abstract art, was simply a method of portraying multiple dimensions onto a two dimensional canvas. This is not unlike the task of the map maker in representing the earth in two dimensions. However, as we interact with something, we rarely interact using only one perspective. For example, as we appreciate nature, we walk around. We might see a tree off in the distance, and as we approach it, our perspective of the tree changes. We might even walk past the tree, and look back on it from a completely different view or see an areal view of the location and appreciate it from a different perspective. How, then, can an artist depict this changing interaction with the subject, while working on a flat piece of canvas? This question is what spurred several artistic innovators to the pioneer form of all abstract art called Cubism. Innovation The Cubists (including Picasso, Braque, Jean Metzinger, Gris, Duchamp, and Léger) were attempting to depict their subject matter not as the eye, but as the mind saw the subject. For example, the woman in the lower right corner of the painting has her back towards the artist. However, we know, and it is depicted in the painting, that she has a face. Also, as the veil or curtain drapes around the bodies, we see a boundry between the women and the drape, while in other places (the leg of the woman to the left) the boundry is not so clear, suggesting the flow of the veil in and around the bodies. The two women in the middle of the painting also have the profile of their noses painted on what appears to be the front of their face. This too, depicts Picasso's attempt to portray the front and the side of the face in the same image.

Cubism was a new way Source: tate.org.uk Cubism was one of the Source: phaidon.com Cubism has roots in Pointillism, Fauvism, and traditional folk sculpture from Africa. Cubists created an abstract, non-representational method of painting to depict three dimensional objects on a two dimensional plane while preserving multiple perspectives. Europeans were importing African figures to study ethnology, but Picasso and Braque valued the nude figurines and masks from an artistic view. They were drawn to the way masks were abstracted and dramatized faces. Also, Africans used natural materials such as wood that inspired cubists to utilize earth tone colors of browns and greens. cubism
Revolutionary style of painting created by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in Paris between 1907 and 1914. It was the most radical of the developments that revolutionized art in the years of unprecedented experimentation leading up to World War I, and it changed the course of painting by introducing a new way of seeing and depicting the world. To the cubists, a painting was first and foremost a flat object that existed in its own right, rather than a kind of window through which a representation of the world is seen. Cubism also had a marked, though less fundamental, effect on sculpture, and even influenced architecture and the decorative arts. Cubism was a complex, gradually evolving phenomenon, but in essence it involved abandoning the single fixed viewpoint that had been the norm in European painting since the Renaissance and instead depicting several different aspects of an object simultaneously. Objects were therefore shown as they are known to be, rather than as they happen to look at a particular moment. In the early days of cubism, this way of representation involved fragmenting objects into facets. Only a handful of Braque's and Picasso's paintings actually use cubelike forms, so cubism is not really an appropriate name. However, the name stuck after being coined facetiously by the critic Louis Vauxcelles in 1908, and it was accepted by the two inventors of the style and their followers.

Often a background in a photo is very busy and can distract from the main subject of the picture. Using Cubism to de-emphasize the background is an effective method to keep attention where you want it.
Try filling some type with a gradient and then adding a cubism effect to give it a broken apart feel.

An excerpt from SatireWire's book, ECONOMY OF ERRORS CUBISTS LAUNCH UNNAVIGABLE WEB SITE
Conceptual Realism Dominates Site No One Will Be Able to Use Anyway MADRID, SPAIN (SatireWire.com) "What the hell is this? I can't tell how to get anywhere," one of the site's first visitors told the Cubist Society's Webmaster-Curator, Paulo Cassat. "Is this art, or is this a Web site?" "Thank you," Cassat responded. Click image for full view According to Society President Francisco Bernioz, the group launched the site to bring attention to Cubism, which was founded in the early 20th Century by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The Society also hopes to establish a scholarship fund for young cubist painters and sculptors. However, at a public showing of the site here in Spain's capital, most initial visitors were clearly uncomfortable with the design, especially the artists the site intends to help. "This site is going to turn people off," complained one young sculptor. "I mean, how do I get from the home page to, say, the fundraising form?"

This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery. Please follow the links below for related online resources or visit our current exhibitions schedule. Related Resources Exhibition Highlights Exhibition Overview Lecture Abstracts Works by Pablo Picasso
in the Gallery's Collection Press Materials Between spring and fall 1909, Picasso produced more than 60 portraits of his companion, Fernande Olivier, in a variety of formats and mediums. In its intense devotion to a single subject, the series is virtually unprecedented in the history of portraiture. Powerful and melancholic, these portraits are among the most compelling in the history of modern art. This exhibition brings together some 50 of the related works, revealing Picasso's exploration of cubism and his radical reformulation of human physiognomy. The National Gallery of Art recently acquired an early bronze cast of Head of a Woman (Fernande) , the culmination of the Fernande series. An icon of early modernism, it is the first example of Picasso's work in sculpture that reflects serious formal experimentation. By seizing a single extended moment in the development of cubism and presenting it comprehensively, this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue allows us to examine Picasso's working process in rare depth.
