Introduction
Negotiations between the Greek and Turkish foreign ministers in late 1958 and early 1959 resulted in three treaties that met to some degree the desires and needs of Greece, Turkey, and Britain. Representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities signed the treaties, but without enthusiasm. The three treatiesthe Treaty of Guarantee, the Treaty of Alliance, and the Treaty of Establishmentwent into effect on August 16, 1960. The Treaty of Guarantee provides that Greece, Turkey, and Britain will ensure the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. It bans political or economic union of the republic with any foreign state and bans activities that would lead to such unions. Forty-eight of the basic articles of the constitution were incorporated into the Treaty of Guarantee, and the treaty's signatories were pledged to uphold the "state of affairs" established by the constitution. Article IV of the treaty states that if this "state of affairs" is endangered or altered, Greece, Turkey, and Britain are obliged to consult together and act to restore it. If joint consultations or actions are not possible, these states may act independently.

Cyprus and the European Union Next Previous Table of Contents I. A Brief History of Cyprus Despite its ideal geographic position as a crossroads between east and west and its continued economic growth, conflict between Turks and Greeks living in Cyprus dominates political and economic life in Cyprus today. In 1974 Turkey invaded northern Cyprus after a military coup on the island was backed by Greece. Presently, Turkish Cypriots live in the northern third of Cyprus, while Greek Cypriots live in the southern two-thirds of the country. Cyprus will join the European Union in the spring of 2004. The United Nations has unsuccessfully attempted on numerous occasions to broker a settlement between the Greeks and the Turks in Cyprus; at this point only the Greek Cypriot part of Cyprus will be joining the EU next year. Early History
By 3750 BC Cyprus was thickly settled, making it one of the oldest civilizations in the Mediterranean region. Because of its central location in the Mediterranean many more powerful empires desired to control Cyprus, and it was ruled for periods of time by the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans. Cyprus was part of the Byzantine Empire for over 800 years (the control of Cyprus by Constantinople officially began in 364 AD). The English controlled the island for a brief period of time during the Crusades; the Franks and Venetia also controlled Cyprus before it was finally seized by the Ottoman Turks in 1571.

The History of Cyprus since the start of British Rule in 1878
Since coming under British administration at the Ottoman Empire's request, the history of Cyprus has seen some turbulent times. From the war between Turkey and Russia, through two world wars, a lengthy struggle for independence and the infamous Turkish invasion of 1974, the history of Cyprus has been anything but mundane.

History of Cyprus from 1878 to 1959
The island's British administration which began in 1878 proved an important influence on the history of Cyprus until its independence in 1960. Although still 'technically' under Turkish rule, the Cypriot legal and governmental systems are dramatically re-structured by the British High Commissioner and his staff. On more than one occasion, these policy reforms cause varying degrees of outrage with the island's Turkish population. Turkey allies itself with the Austro/Hungarian empire at the start of World War This action causes Britain to nullify the treaty governing its administration of Cyprus. The island is officially annexed by the British Empire and is now wholly under the crown's rule.

Playground of the Gods. It was on Pafos coastline that the mythological Goddess Aphrodite was born.
A legend that spawned massive wave of cult worship from neighboring countries that lasted several centuries.
The large rock that juts from the sea is known as "Petra Tou Romiou"-" The Venus Rock" Another "first" for Pafos was its early recognition of Christianity. While under The Roman Rule in 45A.D.,
it was here that Saint Paul converted the first ruler to the faith. Pafos has a charming fishing harbour by Pafos Fort, with cafes and tavernas that serve a tempting menu of the days catch.

Cyprus is an island whose rich, dramatic history can be traced back over eight thousand years; an island so coveted over the centuries that it has been invaded and claimed by a fascinating mixture of civilizations from near and far, all of which have left their culture and shaped its character. An island whose archaeology stems from the Neolithic Age, the Ancient Greeks and the Roman period; where churches and monasteries still stand from Byzantine times, castles and palaces from the days of Crusaders and Frankish Lusignans, and splendid city walls from Venetian days.

It is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Commonwealth, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
According to the above treaty, Britain retains two Soverign Bases (158.5 sq.km) on the island at DekeliaThe Greek Cypriots alternating support for independence and union with Greece, and the efforts of the Turkish Cypriots towards partition of the island, in combination with the military and strategic aims of the Great powers at various times meant that friction that existed between both sides escalated into violence in 1960.

a brief history lesson... For centuries Cyprus has been influenced by the cultures of many different nations, which has led to an island with a rich and diverse historical and architectural heritage. From soli and vouni in the west, Arabahmet Pasha mosque in Lefkosa to Salamis and the site of Apostolos Andreas in the east there is much to reflect 9,000 years of civilization.
The island has been occupied by succession of peoples from Europe and Asia. In the 8th Century BC it was part of the Assyrian empire, then the Babylonian, Egytian and Persian. In 58BC the island was seized by the romans. Richard the lionheart settled on the island in 1191 during the third crusade and after selling it to the Knights Templar permitted Guy de Lusignan to buy the island.
Cyprus remained in Lusignan possession until captured by the Venetians in 1489. From 1571 to 1878 the island was ruled by the Ottomans until they leased its administration to Britain. Independence was granted in 1960, but after Greek Cypriot and Greek military coup in 1974, Turkey was forced to intervene to safe guard the interest of the Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was subsequently proclaimed in 1983. Listed below are just a few of the places of historical interest that you can visit.

"History of Cyprus
from http://ginasrantings.blogspot.com/2005/09/history-of-cyprus.html 9,000 Years of civilization gathered together on one island
It is said, "scratch the soil anywhere in Cyprus and you will find traces of its magnificent past". This is no exaggeration. Evidence of the island's 9,000 years of history is scattered throughout the island.
Remains from the Neolithic period bear witness to the existence of an ancient civilization. According to tradition many of the ancient cities of Cyprus were founded by the heroes of the Trojan War whom also Hellenised the island. Assyrians, Phoenicians, Egyptians and Persians all passed through the island. This strategically important island was part o the Roman Empire for four centuries. Excavations have brought to light temples and palaces, amphitheatres and baths. Just as magnificent are the early Christian basilicas; equally magnificent are the Byzantine churches with their beautiful mosaics and icons. And then Crusader castles, Venetian fortifications.

Cyprus

10.000 Years of History In Cyprus the 21st century rubs shoulders with a civilisation 10000 years old. There are festivals whose origins stretch back into antiquity; like Carnival and Anthestiria organised in honour of God Dionysos; at Kouklia, where the Temple of Aphrodite once stood, a church was known until a few years ago as The Church of the Virgin Mary Aphroditissa'. The aura of the Great Goddess of Cyprus is still present in Pafos, and all over 'the Sweet Land of Cyprus' in the beauty of the landscape, the mildness of the climate and the charm of the people. The immortal words of Euripides and Sophocles ring out on warm summer evenings at the Ancient Kourion Theatre and the Pafos Odeon during performances of ancient Greek drama. And in September wine flows free and the spirit of Dionysos, god of wine and merriment, is present throughout the Wine Festival. The Mediaeval folk songs are still sung in Cyprus keeping alive the legends of Digenis, the unconquerable border guard of Byzantium, and of his beautiful Queen, Rigaina. In the narrow streets of the walled city of Lefkosia the coppersmith works with the metal as did his ancestors 5,000 years ago. In the shade of old houses with their overlooking balconies, the flavour of the past lingers among the old typical stone houses.

20 July and 14 August marked the grim anniversary of the two Turkish invasions of Cyprus in 1974. 24 years on, Turkey occupies one third of the Republic of Cyprus in violation of over 90 United Nations and Security Council resolutions. Today, Turkey continues to threaten yet again Cyprus and the long term security of the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey invaded Cyprus using the spurious excuse of "safeguarding the Turkish Cypriots". Time has exposed the dishonesty of this argument with the subsequent colonisation of the occupied territories of Cyprus and the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Turkish Cypriots by Ankara's illegal occupation regime. This time, the proposed delivery of the S-300 defensive anti-aircraft missile system is being used as the pretext for likely armed aggression. It should not be forgotten that Turkey has over 30,000 heavily armed troops in Cyprus and over 400 tanks and other hardware. In addition it controls the skies over Cyprus. It would therefore not be unreasonable to ask who is threatening whom? Clearly Turkey's military threats are nothing more than a thinly veiled game plan aimed at wider strategic and political goals than simply knocking out the S-300 ground to air missiles. It is no coincidence that Turkey's threats have increased in direct proportion to the continued failure of Turkey and the Denktash regime in occupied Cyprus to achieve recognition for their illegal regime and the failure of Turkey to be considered as suitable for European Union application let alone membership.

http://www.flyhelios.com/cyprus_history.htm
Cyprus History Cyprus has always been an important trading post between the empires of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and throughout history someone has always wanted to take it from someone else.
First the Mycenaeans grabbed it, then the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians and Persians. Alexander the Great took it off them, then Ptolemy snatched it from him. Rome took over in 58 BC and kept the place in relative peace and security until the 7th century, when the Byzantine and Islamic empires started three centuries of bickering over it. In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the Crusades, dropped into Cyprus for a spot of conquering, but the Cypriots caused him too much trouble (one of them killed his hawk and he was forced to massacre a few villages in retaliation), so he sold them to the Knights Templar. The Templars sold the island to Guy de Lusignan, whose heirs hung in for three centuries, repressing the culture and orthodox religion but doing wonders for the economy.
The Venetians took over in 1489, but were booted out by the expanding Ottoman Empire in 1571, which kept Cyprus for 300 years before handing it over to Britain. In 1925 Cyprus became a Crown colony of the UK, but by then the Cypriots had had just about enough of being a pawn for empire-builders, and agitation for self-determination began. This laid the foundations for today's Greek/Turkish conflict: while many Greek Cypriots wanted to form a union with Greece (a movement known as enosis), the Turkish population was not so keen. By 1950, the Cypriot Orthodox Church and 96% of Greek Cypriots wanted enosis. In response, the British drafted a new constitution, which was accepted by the Turkish population but opposed by the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters, who wanted enosis or nothing. They began a guerrilla war against the British.

CYPRUS PREHISTORY The Neolithic Period - 7000 BC to 3900 BC The first settlers arrived to the island approximately 7000.BC, which is today known as the Neolithic age, and were originally inhabitants of the Near East. Once settled on the island, they selected areas with access to water, and preferred to be near the sea, which could also be defended easier strategically. The first of the settlements were circular in shape, and built of large stones, which were collected from rivers. The upper shelter sections of the dwellings were made of daub, and mud-bricks.

CYPRUS BRONZE AGE - 2500 BC to 1050 BC In the mid-3rd century millennium BC, circa 2500 BC, the first discovery of copper was evident at the many different locations throughout the island. This new discovery also seemed to have attracted new settlers to the island, believed to come from Anatolia. Once arrived, they taught the inhabitants their secrets and techniques of metalworking

Prehistoric and Ancient Cyprus
Around 1200 B.C. begins the massive arrival of the Mycenæan Greeks as permanent settlers to Cyprus, a process which lasted for more than a century. This migration is remembered in many sagas concerning how some of the Greek heroes that participated in the Trojan war came to settle in Cyprus. The newcomers brought with them their language, their advanced technology and introduced a new outlook for visual arts. Thus from 1220 B.C. Cyprus has remained predominantly Greek in culture, language and population despite various influences resulting from successive conquests. In times Cyprus supplied the rest of the Greeks with timber for their fleets.
In the 6th century B.C., Amasis of Egypt conquered Cyprus, which soon fell under the rule of the Persians when Cambyses conquered Egypt. In the Persian Empire, Cyprus formed part of the fifth satrapy and in addition to tribute it had to supply the Persians with ships and crews. In their new fate the Greeks of Cyprus had as companions the Greeks of Ionia (west coast of Anatolia) with whom they forged closer ties. When the Ionian Greeks revolted against Persia (499 BC) the Cypriots except for the city of Amathus, joined in at the instigation of Onesilos, brother of the king of Salamis, whom he dethroned for not wanting to fight for independence. The Persians reacted quickly sending a considerable force against Onesilos. The Persians finally won despite Ionian help.
