Danish language

Denmark Faroe Islands Greenland Germany ... Dansk Sprogn¦vn Danish dansk ) belongs to the North Germanic languages (also called Scandinavian languages), a sub-group of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages . It is spoken by around 6 million people mainly in Denmark including some 50,000 people in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany , where it holds the status of minority language. Danish also holds official status and is a mandatory subject in school in the former Danish colonies of Greenland and the Faroe Islands , that now enjoy limited autonomy. In Iceland , which was a part of Denmark until , Danish is still the second foreign language taught in schools (although a few learn Swedish or Norwegian instead). The language started diverging from the common ancestor language Old Norse sometime during the 13th century and became more distinct from the other emerging Scandinavian national languages with the first bible translation in , establishing an orthography differing from that of Swedish , though written Danish is usually far easier for Swedes to understand than the spoken language. Modern spoken Danish is characterized by a very strong tendency of reduction of many sounds making it particularly difficult for foreigners to understand and properly master, not just by reputation but by sheer phonetic reality.

The Danish Language
Danish is spoken by roughly 6 million people worldwide, the vast majority of which live in Denmark, where it is the official language. Danish is also an official language in Greenland and the Faeroe Islands, where there are significant numbers of speakers, and a recognized minority language in the Schleswig region of Germany near the border with Denmark. Danish is closely related to Swedish and Norwegian, and in its written form is almost identical to Norwegian. However, all three languages are very different in the way that they pronounce common words. According to the Wikipedia, the close similarities between these languages have led some linguists to label them dialects of one single Scandinavian language. Since in the Middle Ages Danish has been subsequently influenced by Low German dialects, French and most recently English. Danish also has four main dialect groups which correspond to its largest islands/peninsulas: Sj¦llandsk (Central-Eastern Danish), Jysk (Western Danish), Bornholmsk (Eastern Danish), and Fynsk (Central Danish). The standard form of Danish taught in schools is called Rigsdansk. Below are some brief but important facts about the country of Danishland and its people.

Single + Cats = Sad
Blog is such a funny word. It would be impossible to say it without a tongue. So yes, I have cats. But I have a dog too. And I'm single. And I'm OK with that. Because I'm not settling for the first guy to come along just because I'm scared I'll never get married. By the time everyone else makes it through divorce #1, I'll start thinking seriously about this marriage thing. In the meantime, this is my life. Well, the shallow part of it at least.
Friday, January 25, 2008
A hot man tease.
A co-worker I've never met before (I work at a big company) just came around the office to introduce her husband.
And her husband's hot, hot friend visiting from Denmark, who's also a writer.
With a hot accent.
We definitely made eye contact. He asked me what I wrote about. I told him.
I think I blushed.
As soon as he walked away, the sweet, motherly-like woman who sits next to me we'll just call her Rose whipped her chair around to face me.
Rose: "You should go out with him!"
(I love Rose.)

Most Danish words are derived from the Old Norse language , with new words formed by compounding. A large percentage of Danish words, however, hails from Low German (e.g., betale = to pay, måske = maybe). Later on, High German and French and now English have superseded Low German influence. Because English and Danish are related languages, many common words are very similar in the two languages. For example, the following Danish words are easily recognizable in their written form to English speakers: have over under for kat . When pronounced, these words sound quite different from their English equivalents, however. In addition, the suffix by , meaning "town", occurs in several English placenames, such as Whitby and Selby , as remnants of the Viking occupation. The rules of Danish pronunciation are challenging for English speakers to learn; the written forms of words sometimes do not correspond to modern pronunciation.
