41. White Cats, Eye Colours And Deafness
It is also a fallacy that all blueeyed white cats are born deaf . All kittens are born blue-eyed and with their ears folded down.
http://www.messybeast.com/whitecat.htm
WHITE CATS, EYE COLOURS AND DEAFNESS
2001 - 2007, Sarah Hartwell ALBINO OR JUST WHITE? A true albino cat
The eyes are unpigmented and appear pink. The skin is pale pink. A true albino kitten, age 7 weeks, owned by Michelle R. McGaha. The eyes are unpigmented and appear pink. The skin is pale pink. The mother is a tortie Manx, the father is unknown. He is very light sensitive and will need sun-protection on his ears to guard against skin cancer (all white-eared cats have a risk of skin cancer if they sunbathe too much). Contrary to popular belief, white cats with blue, orange or green eyes are not albino. Albino cats, such as the one in this photo, have pink (unpigmented) or bluish-pink eyes and, like most albino animals, their eyes are sensitive to light. The white colour in cats is due to a gene that masks any other colour genes (this is why white cats can have non-white or bi-colour kittens). Albinism is a different mutation that causes the absence of colour, not the covering up of colour. When owners talk about having green-eyed or orange-eyed albino cats, they mean green-eyed or orange-eyed "dominant white" cats. In this context, dominant means a gene that masks other genes, it does not mean the cat has a dominant personality. Recessive white is an alternate name for the blue-eyed/pink-eyed albino gene which is part of the colourpoint series of genes. The white spotting gene can sometimes produced solid white cats and is also sometimes called recessive white.

It is the month when focus is on educating the public about speech and hearing disorders, promoting treatment and understanding for people who my need it. Loud noise and hearing loss Many advancements in technology have added noise pollution to our environment in a way never before experienced. Hearing loss has developed in direct proportion to our exposure to this noise. 49. On The Trail Of Deafness Genes
What are the causes of deafness? Can isolating deafness genes lead to better treatments for the profoundly deaf and hearing impared?
http://www.hhmi.org/senses/c140.html
On the Trail of Deafness Genes
A 2-hour exposure to loud noise, similar to that of loud rock bands, is enough to seriously damage cilia bundles on the hair cells of a cat's inner ear. Normal mammalian hair cell bundles have two or three parallel rows of cilia, one taller than the next. The tall cilia are most vulnerable to noise.
After exposure to loud noise, all the tall cilia on the right of this picture have disappeared or fused together and fallen over.
Photo: Michael J. Mulroy and M. Charles Leberman, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Listening. "The silence around me is invisible...." Most of the 28 million deaf or hearing-impaired people in the United States were born with normal hearing, as was Merker, who became deaf after a skiing accident in her twenties. Their deafness generally results from overexposure to loud noise, disease, or old age. But genetic factors are also an important cause of hearing loss, especially in children. It is estimated that 1 in every 1,000 newborns is profoundly deaf, while nearly 1 in 20 has a significant hearing impairment. In more than half of these cases, the cause is genetic. Deafness is associated with over 100 different genetic disorders, however. Since there is often no obvious difference between deafness that is caused by different genes, finding the genes involved has proved quite difficult. Scientists could not simply group together families with the same disorder and then try to localize the guilty gene, the usual method. Instead, they had to seek large families whose members were likely to have the same genetic defect. The number of people available for such studies was relatively small.

Congenital Deafness
Last updated May 26, 2003 While acquired deafness associated with age or noise exposure more common than genetic deafness by roughly 2 orders of magnitude, congenital deafness occurs in 1 per every 1000-2000 births with autosomal recessive inheritance being the most common form (more than 75%). Non-inherited abnormalities of the inner ear such as the Mondini malformation, account for roughly 20% of congenital sensorineural deafness. The bulk of the remaining, genetic deafness is non-syndromic, meaning that it does not have any obvious distinguishing features.
Non-syndromic (80% of congenital deafness):
About 80% of genetic hearing loss is non-syndromic. Between 1992 and 2001, 38 loci for autosomal dominant nonsyndromic deafness have been mapped and 11 genes have been cloned. Autosomal dominant locii are called DFNA, autosomal recessive as DFNB, and X-linked as DFN. An update on current locii can be found on the hereditary hearing loss homepage , which is hosted by the University of Iowa. Non-syndromic deafness is highly heterogeneous but mutations in the connexin-26 molecule (gap junction protein, gene GJB2) account for about 49% of patients with non-syndromic deafness and about 37% of sporadic cases. Assays for connexin-26 are commercially available at s

Deafness and the availability of options
deaf couple who want to use IVF to select a deaf baby (they have already had one naturally). The father, Tomato Lichy, was interviewed
JH: I don't think anybody would say - no sensible person would say - that deaf people are inferior to hearing people, but the fact is that they have a disability: a pretty serious disability. They cannot hear. Surely you have no right to effectively impose that disability on another child? The child doesn't belong to you; the child is a person in its own right.
TL: You say it's a serious disability. I disagree with that. We have an interpreter here for you to be able to understand me. If I go to a deaf club or a deaf academic conference with thousands of deaf people, you would be lost. You're the one with the disability, because you can't use sign language.
JH: Isn't that a slightly perverse point? I, after all, don't need, somebody to sign for me. I can hear the music of Beethoven or listen to a play by Shakespeare or pop music or whatever it happens to be - you can't. So therefore you have a disability. Surely that's simply a fact?
TL: Well, I feel sorry for you, because you haven't acquired sign language, you can't appreciate deaf plays, you can't appreciate deaf poetry, you can't appreciate the joy of being part of the deaf community, the jokes that go on. I feel sorry for you.

Deaf Like Me

Many people find this book THE book to read in regards to a deaf child's experience (of course, that includes her family as well). And this book is very good at showing you what a hearing family goes through when a deaf child is born into it.

My page is about ferrets deafness in ferrets, photography, a little about our family, autism, It has lots of links to many ferret places!
http://www.geocities.com/wolfysluv/deaf.html

Ping, is a blaze/panda mix. The Waardenburg gene has expressed itself visibly down to every detail. This is Ping. He is considered a blaze/panda mix. I think he couldn't decide what to do. Typical blazes have a stripe down the middle of their head continuing down their back. They usually do not have socks nor mitts (though they can), but more typically white toes. White knees are common. It's not uncommon for them to have a white spot on or underneath their tails. They may or may not have white speckled bellies, and may or may not have a white bib. Most of the time their noses are pink. Their eyes vary from a burgandy to ruby color. Pong This is Pong. Now his deafness was hard for me to believe and accept at first. He looks like a bibbed Sable. Just a garden variety marked standard ferret pretty much. But upon close examination, Pong has a lot of white hair underneath his paws, and if you look closely...he has two white tipped toes on each foot. each front foot has snow white hair underneath He has a large white spot on his tail. He has lots of roan white hairs dispersed all over his body. He has a lot of white on his muzzle, and a pink nose. Now...if you reaaaally want to stretch it, Pong has a white line of hair that is paper thin between his ears that is about an inch long. You really have to look. Now although these are such miniscule markings … it is none the less evidence of a Waardenburg gene in him that never really came out. Unfortunately for him the deafness trait did.
