A: Dengue is a viral fever and is caused by 4 types of closely related viruses. Q: How does dengue fever occur? A: Dengue viruses spread to humans by the bite of female mosquitoes. These mosquitoes acquire the virus while feeding on the blood of an infected person. The virus circulates in the blood of infected humans for 2 –7 days leading to fever. Recovery from infection provided immunity against that particular virus but offers only partial protection against the other three viruses. Infact, subsequent infection increases the risk of a more complicated fever called as " dengue hemorrhagic fever ".

Engineered Mosquitoes Could Wipe Out Dengue Fever
Posted by Soulskill on Thu Jan 24, 2008 10:02 PM
from the working-out-the-bugs dept. Christina Valencia points us to a Wired story about scientists who plan to use genetically modified mosquitoes to reduce the population of Dengue-carrying insects . The altered genes cause newly born mosquitoes to die before they are able to breed if they are not supplied with a crucial antibiotic. This is a more aggressive approach than the anti-Malaria work we discussed last year. From Wired:

Dengue Fever: Los Angeles band mixes Cambodian pop and American indie rock
By RJ Smith Published: January 22, 2008 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size LOS ANGELES Dengue Fever is a Los Angeles band featuring a Cambodian-born singer and five American alt-rockers who regularly embarrass her onstage. On the cover of its new album, "Venus on Earth" (M80), the guitarist Zac Holtzman, with a long beard and goggles, drives a scooter with the vocalist Chhom Nimol sitting demurely behind him sidesaddle, the way a good Cambodian girl would ride through the streets of Phnom Penh. Dengue Fever, which specializes in an unlikely mix of 1960s Cambodian pop, rock and other genres, is a lot like that image. Propriety and smart aleck indie rock race by, blurring together. It is a band of rollicking lightness that keeps coming up deep. At a recent show in the Echo Park neighborhood here, the male members were downright goofy, but Chhom, singing mostly in Khmer and dressed in shimmering Cambodian silk garments she designs herself, looked like old-school royalty, a queen before the hipoisie. No wonder she seemed to roll her eyes from time to time onstage. But after the set, when she lighted a candle onstage to honor those killed by the Khmer Rouge, her voice broke and tears ran down her face.

Study links Mexican dengue trends to sea temperatures
The authors of the report, published in the November issue of Tropical Medicine and International Health , said they believe their study is the first to report an association between El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indicators and dengue incidence in Mexico. ENSO is an ocean temperature phenomenon in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that consists of warm (El Nino) and cold (La Nina) phases. The researchers wrote that Veracruz experiences heavy rain, flooding, and heat during El Nino phases of ENSO. From 1995 to 2003 they recorded weekly temperature readings and rainfall amounts from weather stations in two Veracruz cities: San Andres Tuxtla and Veracruz. As an ENSO indicator, they used weekly reports of sea-surface temperatures in a specific zone of the Pacific Ocean that were available from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The researchers obtained dengue case reports for the two towns from the Veracruz State Health Ministry. Also, the group examined weekly local activities to control

Dengue fever
From Wikitravel
Jump to: navigation search This article is a travel topic Dengue fever (pronounced DEN-geh ) is a viral tropical disease transmitted by mosquito bites. There is no vaccine or medical cure and treatments only manage the symptoms of the disease, some of which can be fatal. The only possible preventive measures are to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and to avoid mosquito bites. Dengue is not infectious between humans. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the aedes aegypti mosquito, which is found in tropical regions throughout the world. In much of this area, particularly South-East Asia but also in Queensland Australia , the tropical South Pacific islands, South Asia Africa , tropical parts of North and South America , including the Caribbean , these mosquitoes carry the flavivirus , which causes Dengue fever. Mild cases without rash may be easily misdiagnosed as flu . These symptoms usually appear 3-14 days (most commonly 4-7 days) after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The acute symptoms of the disease typically lasts 6-7 days, however it can take many months to fully recover. There is no specific treatment, other than fever management. The symptoms can be alleviated with appropriate medication and fatality rates can be less than 1 in 1000.

Dramatic dengue spike among US tropics travelers
A report in the Jun 30 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report summarizes the 96 cases that were reported in 2005. An accompanying editorial note says that 98 cases were diagnosed in 1999 through 2004. Among 199 travelers in 2005 whose clinical symptoms suggested dengue fever, 96 cases were confirmed on the basis of serum samples. Of the patients with confirmed cases, 17 (18%) were hospitalized, including 1 who died. The fatality occurred in a previously healthy 28-year-old woman who had spent a week in Mexico. Of the 96 patients with dengue, 53 (55%) were female. Median age was 43 years for the 83 patients in whom age was reported. Travel destinations for the 2 weeks before disease onset were available for 73 patients; locations included Mexico (32), Central America (19), the Caribbean (16), and Asia (6). The CDC's note says that incidences of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are increasing in tropical areas of the world. They attribute the increase to waning support for mosquito-control programs, urbanization of the tropics, increasing human populations, and increased use of nonbiodegradable products that provide mosquito breeding areas.

http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/infectious/dengue_fever.html
Dengue fever Dengue fever is a viral infection that typically causes flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, joint pains, headaches, nausea, and vomiting, often followed by a rash. Most cases are mild and resolve uneventfully in a few days. However, dengue sometimes causes excessive bleeding (dengue hemorrhagic fever) or a dangerous fall in blood pressure (dengue shock syndrome) that may be fatal. The available evidence indicates that that children under age 15 experiencing a second dengue infection are at greatest risk for severe disease, which implies that adult travelers who have never been exposed to dengue are unlikely to develop these complications. Dengue is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite preferentially during the daytime, especially in the morning and late afternoon (in contrast to Anopheles mosquitoes, the vectors of malaria, which are most active after sundown). Aedes mosquitoes are usually found close to human habitations, often indoors. They breed primarily in man-made water containers, such as jars, barrels, cans, cisterns, metal drums, plastic containers, and discarded tires. As a result, dengue is especially common in densely populated, urban environments, though it occurs in rural areas as well. The disease has been spreading in recent years, due in part to increasing urbanization, and is now endemic in more than one hundred tropical and subtropical countries. In the year 2005, a total of 96 cases of dengue were identified in travelers from the United States, mostly after visits to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. A much smaller number occurred after travel to Asia.

By the time he got to bed, his flu-like symptoms gave way to achy joints and feverish dreams. That's when he got suspicious that he had dengue fever, the mosquito-borne virus that, in its deadly form, causes blood to seep from the bloodstream into tissue and eventually from the body's orifices. Several days later, doctors diagnosed the expat aid worker with a milder, non-lethal variation of the disease. Since there are no drugs or vaccines for dengue, Tind Simmons did what some 38,500 infected Cambodians did this year: he drank plenty of water and waited for his bout of "bone-break fever," as the disease is often called, to go away.
