DNA gene chips and novel software used to describe kidney development
The step-by-step development of a mammalian kidney, from its early beginnings in the embryo to its adult role as a vital filtration system, has been described by UCSD School of Medicine researchers Date: 15 Jan 2008 , Rating: not rated Cloned stem cells prove identical to fertilized stem cells
Scientists generally agree that all cloned animals are biologically flawed. But they don't agree about what that means for stem cells derived from cloned embryos, the basis for therapeutic cloning. Date: 15 Jan 2008 , Rating: not rated Genetic interplay between the transcription factors Sp8 and Emx2 in the patterning of the forebrain The authors show that the transcription factor Sp8 has an essential role in the molecular and functional patterning of the developing telencephalon along the anteroposterior axis by modulating the expression gradients of Emx2 and Pax6.

Developmental biology
Covers the study of normal developmental processes and mechanisms from the cellular to organismal level, in plants, animals and microbes. We encourage projects on differentiation, morphogenesis, stem cell biology, and comparative developmental biology, including the application of genetics - particularly through analysis of gene networks and post-genomic approaches. Current priorities are gene function analysis in developmental biology, evolutionary developmental biology, and stem cell biology. The research grant area to which you apply depends more in the underlying aim of the work than in the organism under study. Organismal-level studies that incorporate developmental aspects in plants are generally covered in the plant and microbial sciences research grant area. Research applying molecular, cellular and behavioural information (in addition to genetic approaches) to understand how animals function at the tissue level and above is generally covered by the animal sciences research grant area.

Oxidative Stress Shown to Disrupt Gene Expression in Mouse Model Oxidative stress may be to blame for higher rates of neural tube defects in diabetic pregnancies, according to research led by Mary Loeken, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Joslin Diabetes Center. Diabetic women who are pregnant are warned to keep their glucose levels under control or risk birth defects like spina bifida. But how glucose thwarts the development of certain tissues in the embryo has been unclear. This latest study, published in the April Diabetologia

Members of the Division have been involved in two well associated projects. One , which was initiated in 1968, is to understand how a special tissue like the silk gland of Bombyx mori is differentiated along the developmental programs and results in transcribing a specific set of genes like the silk fibroin, fibroin L-chain, P25, sericin-1, and sericin-2 genes. The other initiated at the time when the Division was established in 1978 is concerned with how the body plan of the silkworm is controlled and how the developmental regulatory genes regulate a set of target genes in specifying the identities of various regions of the embryos.

Developmental biology is the study of the process by which organisms grow and develop. Modern developmental biology studies the genetic control of cell growth differentiation and " morphogenesis ," which is the process that gives rise to tissues organs and anatomy Embryology is a subfield, the study of organisms between the one-cell stage (generally, the zygote ) and the end of the embryonic stage, which is not necessarily the beginning of free living. Embryology was originally a more descriptive science until the 20th century . Embryology and developmental biology today deal with the various steps necessary for the correct and complete formation of the body of a living organism. The related field of evolutionary developmental biology was formed largely in the and is a synthesis of findings from molecular developmental biology and evolutionary biology which considers the diversity of organismal form in an evolutionary context.

Larsson has turned to the burgeoning field of evo-devo or evolutionary developmental biology a radical new approach to understanding the past. It is based on the astonishing discovery that modern animals, including humans, share many of the same body-building genes and that some of these genes have been around for millions of years. New Gestational Diabetes Clue
    Nov 2, 2007
"The basis of gestational diabetes has been a black box," says researcher Seung Kim, MD, PhD, associate professor of developmental biology at Stanford University of Medicine, in a news release. According to the American Diabetes Association, about 4% of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, which is when a previously non-diabetic woman's body isn't able to make enough insulin needed during pregnancy. Pancreas May Be Key to Pregnancy-Linked Diabetes
    Nov 2, 2007
"This suggests that there is an internal code for controlling pancreatic islet growth, a code we intend to crack," senior author Dr. Seung Kim, associate professor of developmental biology, said in a prepared statement. Kim's team also found that the amount of menin present in the pancreas is regulated by a hormone called prolactin, which is abundant in pregnant women. (Health-Finder)

Sticky uterine coating helps embryo implant in uterus
Developmental Biology January 22, 2004 2004 JAN 22 - ( NewsRx.com NewsRx.net ) After fertilization, an embryo has just a few days to settle into a woman's uterus, implant, and start growing into a baby. Researchers have learned that during the fertile period in a woman's menstrual cycle, cells in her uterus acquire a sticky sugar coating. Recently, National Institute of General Medical Sciences grantee Steven Rosen of the University of California, San Francisco, teamed up with fellow UCSF scientist Susan J. Fisher to make an important discovery about implantation, which Fisher had been studying for many years.

UB scientist publishes first human microbiome analysis

Researchers have completed the first analysis of the genes of a community of human microbes, an accomplishment that has far-reaching implications for clinical diagnosis and treatment of many human diseases. Gut reaction: Researchers define the colon's genome
For the first time, scientists have defined the collective genome of the human gut, or colon. Up to 100 trillion microbes, representing more than 1,000 species, make up a motley "microbiome" that allows humans to digest much of what we eat, including some vitamins, sugars, and fiber. The new study appears in the June 2 Science. UCLA biomathematician earns prestigious peer award
Dr. Marc Suchard, an assistant professor of biomathematics and human genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has won the 2006 Mitchell Prize. The award recognizes an outstanding research paper that applies a statistical approach called Bayesian analysis to solve an important scientific dilemma.
