In this section I will discuss various diets and dieting. Most people struggle with their weight at some point in their lives. Walk into any bookstore in the country and you can find hundreds of diet books that will tell you that they have found the ultimate diet. The types of diets taught are as varied as the types of people writing the books. They include: High protein/low carb High carb/low protein Low fat Diets based on genetics Diets based on body type Vegetarian diets Diets based on the timing of what you eat EDUCATE Yourself. As we get older the foods we eat begin to have a more profound effect on how we look and how we feel. Poor diets contribute to poor health, poor appearance, and decreased energy. As you get older your focus should not be on a "fad diet" or any type of unsustainable diet. Yo-yoing weight is extremely taxing to your cardiovascular system. Stop looking for a miracle "diet" and make a lasting change to your eating habits. Build your personal diet around the following principles and you can have and maintain a healthy diet. 1. The human body stores food intake as fat when you eat more calories in a day than you use...period. I does not matter if the food you ate was protein, carbohydrates, or fat. If you take in more calories in a day than you burn in a day you will gain body fat.

The National Weight Control Registry collects and collates data from those that have had success losing weight, and kept it off for at least a year. I have posted something like this before, but it is worth repeating the interesting findings. NWCR FACTS * You may find it interesting to know about the people who have enrolled in the registry thus far.
  • 80% of persons in the registry are women and 20% are men. The "average" woman is 45 years of age and currently weights 145 lbs, while the "average" man is 49 years of age and currently weights 190 lbs. Registry members have lost an average of 66 lbs and kept it off for 5.5 years. These averages, however, hide a lot of diversity:
      Weight losses have ranged from 30 to 300 lbs. Duration of successful weight loss has ranged from 1 year to 66 years! Some have lost the weight rapidly, while others have lost weight very slowlyover as many as 14 years.
    We have also started to learn about how the weight loss was accomplished: 45% of registry participants lost the weight on their own and the other 55% lost weight with the help of some type of program. 98% of Registry participants report that they modified their food intake in some way to lose weight.
