OVERVIEW
This pre-conference workshop will demonstrate how to build a variety of different kinds of digital library collections with the Greenstone digital library software, a comprehensive, open-source system for constructing, presenting, and maintaining information collections. Collections will be built from HTML documents; Word, PDF and PostScript documents; images in various formats; MP3 and MIDI audio; MARC records; and more. For each collection, various different full-text search indexes and metadata-based browsers will be created. We will discuss support for Dublin Core, OAI, and METS, and show how collections can be exported to and from DSpace. Attendees who wish to are encouraged to bring their laptops, install this open source software from a CD-ROM that we will provide, along with various sample files, and follow along with the demonstrations on their

By Jamie Beckett, Nov. 2005 When Srinivasan Ramani was growing up in Chennai, India, his parents went without a car and much else to allow him to attend university, so he well understands the value of a good education.
" In emerging-market countries, education is essential," Ramani says, noting that it is common for people in India to spend a third of their entire lifetime incomes on educating their children.
PCs, Internet connections rare
Effective use of digital libraries in India is a trickier proposal than it might sound because most students don't own PCs and a large number of the nation's colleges lack a broadband connection. What India does have in its favor is a communications satellite devoted to education, educational TV channels and pioneering professors like G.D. Sharma and Aji Kembhavi who promote the creation and use of interactive multimedia programs in education. Sharma heads the inter-university Consortium for Educational Communication, which produces the universities' educational TV channel. Kembhavi, of the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, mentors faculty at several universities to encourage use of technology in teaching and research.

    Introduction
Throughout the history of the world, libraries have been important institutions for the cultivation and preservation of humanity. Libraries are the repositories for humanity's knowledge; they are our past, our present, and our future. Cultural relevancies and temporal developments have always been deciding factors for determining the kinds of information collected. The Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Romans developed some of the greatest libraries known to the world, expanding far beyond the clerical and economic data stored in Sumerian libraries, to include many more forms of knowledge. Over the centuries, libraries continued to transform themselves to reflect the ever-changing needs of users. Today, libraries are much more than storehouses for books, journals, and newspapers, and include other forms of electronic data, however, one thing that has not changed is the universe of information is forever expanding and is continuing to do so at ever-increasing speeds. Jewett's panacea was a union catalogue that would provide an interlibrary loan service to anyone who was interested. An admirable idea, and as we know, the Library of Congress and the National Library of Canada were later founded. But is the technology now available to fulfil Charles Jewett's vision for universal access to all the knowledge that the world has to offer? The terms

Digital Libraries "The soul can not think without a picture." Aristotle Digitalization is an important method for preserving and providing access to fragile archives, museum collections and historical artifacts.  In this project, we examined and compared different approaches for acquiring and preserving such collections. As data acquisition methods develop, the requirements for displaying the digital collections becomes increasingly demanding. In this project we showed that by using a practical and flexible auto-configurable display system we can fully present the resolution of the stored data, making possible the in-depth analysis that the data deserve.
