22. Super Book! - Dissections: Plane & Fancy
This book explores an area of mathematical recreations, called geometric dissections.

by Greg Frederickson , published by Cambridge University Press
Hardcover: November 1997, ISBN 0-521-57197-9. Softcover: February 2003, ISBN 0-521-52582-9. My book explores an area of mathematical recreations, called geometric dissections. A geometric dissection is a cutting of one or more figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures. With an emphasis on using as few pieces as possible, these geometrical puzzles have prompted ingenious approaches, leading to many beautiful and elegant constructions. An example is the remarkable 5-piece dissection of a regular octagon to a square. I have included not only earlier dissections but also much new unpublished material by myself and others. The discussion highlights the techniques and their underlying mathematical properties, and is accompanied by hundreds of diagrams. Special attention is paid to historical origins, transporting the reader to the palace school of the tenth-century Baghdad caliphate, to the mathematical puzzle columns in turn-of-the-century newspapers, and to the 1900 Paris Congress of Mathematicians. Short biographies flesh out the lives of the people - famous, not-so-famous, and obscure - who have worked on these problems. Marvelous illustrations are reproduced from the book Cyclopedia of Puzzles by Sam Loyd.

http://www.ento.vt.edu/~carroll/insect_video_dissection.html
Cockroach Dissection We begin with Take 2 filming of a cockroach dissection. Dr. Richard Fell performs the procedure. The cockroach is chilled on ice to slow its activity. The underside of the wings are then pinned to the dissection plate. The legs are removed and additional pins are inserted at the base of the wings. Once the cockroach is securely fastened to the plate, the side or ventral cuts along the abdomen are made to remove the exoskeleton. The fat body is teased apart with forceps and removed to expose the internal organs more clearly. The most noticeable system of organs we see once the fat body is removed is the digestive system. The major structures include the crop, gastric caeca, midgut, Malpighian tubules and hindgut. The crop, an enlargement of the foregut, serves as temporary storage for undigested food. Digestion of complex sugars begins in the foregut. Gastric caeca, the elongated pouches at the beginning of the midgut, contain bacteria which aid in digestion. The midgut is the primary area for digestion and absorption. Contents from the midgut and Malpighian tubules empty into the hindgut, where final resorption of water, salts, and nutrients from the feces and urine takes place before excretion.

Life as a WordPress blogger has become remarkably easy. If you can hold a mouse and follow instructions then you're most of the way towards carving out your own niche on the internet. A fresh installation gives you a powerful and attractive system with minimal effort, and with a little luck you can be blogging in under half an hour. Despite the availability of hundreds of themes, and the general goodness of the default Kubrick theme, sometimes you just want to give your blog that personal touch, and the only way to do this is by going under the hood and having a look around. A month in to running a WordPress-based website and I find myself doing the very same thing. None of the themes were exactly what I was looking for, and after investigating the internals of WordPress I realised it was a lot more involved than it initially appeared. I could certainly imagine a beginner being overwhelmed by the mass of acronyms and incongruent technologies. With this in mind I decided to write a guide that would help not only myself, but might also help others who have been put off trying to experiment with WordPress. I make no claims of being a style guru and will rely on common sense and basic design principles.

How to Date the Grand Canyon: Go With the Flow
By Carl Zimmer Geologists maintain that the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon's walls very gradually over a long period of time, and they have found new evidence to nail down exactly how long.
Momatiuk-Eastcott/Corbis The Grand Canyon is a victim of terrible press. Its banded walls make up one of the most magnificent landscapes on Earth. And yet it seems the only time reporters bother to mention its geology is when they are writing about creationists and their bogus claims that the Grand Canyon formed a few thousand years ago. It's a shame, because the real story of the Grand Canyon is a riveting epic. Even its scientific history is fascinating: Figuring out just how old the Grand Canyon is has challenged geologists for 150 years. And just this week, the mystery may be solved. Creationists would have you believe that the Grand Canyon formed in Noah's flood. They offer

What does a Real Heart Look Like?
Dissecting a Porcine (Pig) Heart
The pig heart is interesting to us because it is very similar to the human heart in anatomy, size and function. Its excellent availability in most areas of the world, along with the similarities to the human heart, make porcine heart tissue ideal for transplant into humans. Of course, untreated porcine tissue would be rejected very quickly by the recipient's body, in the same way that a human's donated organ would be rejected. To prevent this, porcine heart valves are treated with glutaraldehyde to reduce their immunogenicity.
The muscle of your heart is called the myocardium. Most of the myocardium is located in the ventricles which are roughly the size of your fist. The porcine heart, like a human heart, has four chambers and four valves Blood flows through the pig heart in the same manner as through a human's. This picture shows the pig heart from the front, with the portion on the right of the picture being the left side of the heart and vice versa. The aorta is clearly visible at the top, with an

Dissection Choice Introduction
U. of Illinois Adopts Dissection-Alternatives Policy
March 7, 2005: Virgina Commonwealth University just passed a student-choice policy that gives students with ethical or religious objections to dissection the opportunity to earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree without participating in academic exercises they find objectionable! Read the full story here . For more information about this important victory, you can contact Nicole Green (Assistant Director of Education, Animalearn) at (215)887-0816, or April Kung (the Virginia Commonwealth University Student who spearheaded the campaign) at (804)358-2829. Congratulations!
February 3, 2005: While we do not have a list of every class using animals, it appears that at least some classes in the timetable now indicate both whether or not a course includes dissection and whether or not alternatives are available. For example, Biology of Reproduction has alternatives available for all dissection requirements. It appears that once the emotions died down from the original controversy, professors and department heads were more willing to make some accomodations quietly!
In other news, April Kung at Virginia Commonwealth University is working on a student chocie policy at her school. We've added a link to the

ARTICLE SECTIONS
Introduction
An aortic dissection is a serious condition in which a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta, the large blood vessel branching off the heart. Blood surges through this tear into the middle layer of the aorta, causing the inner and middle layers to separate (dissect). If the blood-filled channel ruptures through the outside aortic wall, aortic dissection is usually fatal. Aortic dissection, also called dissecting aneurysm, is relatively uncommon. Anyone can develop the condition, but it most frequently occurs in men between 40 and 70 years of age. The signs and symptoms of aortic dissection may mimic those of other diseases, often leading to delays in diagnosis. However, when an aortic dissection is detected early and treated promptly, your chance of survival greatly improves. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

The HSUS has created a Dissection Campaign Packet for students of high school age and younger. The aim of this project is to help you to inform teachers, students, and other members of the public about the dissection issue, and about the need to replace the practice of killing and cutting up animals for education with effective, humane alternatives. Some of the materials in this packet are listed below, with suggestions on ways to use them:
      • Humane Education Loan Program (HELP) Brochure lists more than 100 dissection alternatives available for loan from The HSUS free of charge (save return postage). Problems with Dissection lists the humane, social, pedagogical, and environmental problems with dissection. Dissection: Want to Know a Simple Way to Say No Way? This pamphlet explains the dissection issue in a nutshell, and helps students get ideas for proceeding with a campaign to change things at his or her school. To Harm Or Not To Harm This brochure helps college level students obtain an education in accordance with his or her moral and ethical beliefs by presenting information on how to implement alternatives at the college or university level.

DISSECTION Dissection is the cutting into of a dead animal to learn about the anatomy or physiology of the animal. It involves cutting into a dead animal while vivisection entails cutting into or dissecting a live animal.
Over six million animals are killed for the dissection industry each year. For more information on vivisection, visit: http://www.lcanimal.org/cmpgn/cmpgn_016.htm

Sources of Dissected Animals
  • The wild –The majority are taken from their natural habitats. Many species of amphibians and reptiles, especially frogs, are declining at an alarming rate. Although this decline is caused mostly by habitat destruction and pollution, the removal of species for dissection worsens the problem. Other species generally taken from their natural environment include turtles, snakes, fish (usually perch), dogfish sharks, earthworms, crayfish, salamanders, and most invertebrates. Breeding facilities –Breeding facilities purposely breed animals for dissection.

(In the applet you can either drag the pieces manually or make them move automatically by pressing the "Animate" button.) When the pieces put together to form a rectangle, the inner edges of the polygons do not fit together. The applet blurs the effect by adjusting the pieces ever so little. In an "honest" version of the applet the effect is clearly noticeable. It becomes obvious there how small an adjustment is really required. The explanation involves the famous Fibonacci numbers. The dissection pieces can be rearranged in a different manner with a no less remarkable result.

Dissection
A growing number of educators believe that dissection devalues life by reducing animals to mere "specimens" and "tools" to be used and disposed of. Numerous studies have shown that there is a link between how students treat animals and how they treat one another. In Hawthorne, California, investigators brought up the possible connection between a spate of cat mutilations and the cat dissections at a local high school. In his last interview before his death, Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer, said that his fascination with death and dismemberment began when his school instructed him in animal dissection.
Thankfully, humane science education programs are becoming more common. Ten states have laws or policies mandating that students have the option to learn science and anatomy by using one of the many humane alternatives to dissection, which are high-tech, effective, affordable, and reusable. States with dissection-choice laws or policies include California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia. If your state is not among those that guarantee students' right to choose, request an educators' dissection pack from TeachKind. This pack will provide you with information on alternatives to dissection and advice about changing school policy.
