Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection
One of the most talked about new surgical techniques in breast cancer is sentinel lymph node dissection. This is an alternative to standard axillary lymph node dissection , and many women believe that it can spare them more invasive surgery and side effects. However, the sentinel node procedure is not appropriate for everyone. Recent research shows that even after the sentinel node procedure, more surgery may be necessary. It has its own limitations and drawbacks, and must be done by a surgeon who has significant experience with the technique. The dictionary defines "sentinel" as a guard, watchdog, or protector. Likewise, the sentinal lymph node is the first node "standing guard" for your breast. In sentinel lymph node dissection, the surgeon looks for the very first lymph node that filters fluid draining away from the area of the breast that contained the breast cancer. If cancer cells are breaking away from the tumor and traveling away from your breast via the lymph system, the sentinel lymph node is more likely than other lymph nodes to contain cancer. The idea behind sentinel node dissection is this: Instead of removing ten or more lymph nodes and analyzing all of them to look for cancer, remove only the one node that is most likely to have it. If this node is clean, chances are the other nodes have not been affected. In reality, the surgeon usually removes a cluster of two or three nodes—the sentinel node and those closest to it.

  • Most aortic dissections occur because high blood pressure causes the artery's wall to deteriorate. People have sudden, excruciating pain, most commonly across the chest but also in the back between the shoulder blades. Doctors usually do x-rays or computed tomography scans to confirm the diagnosis. People usually take drugs to decrease blood pressure, and doctors do surgery or place stent grafts to repair the tear.
When the lining of the aorta tears, blood can surge through, separating (dissecting) the middle layer of the wall from the still intact outer layer. As a result, a new, false channel forms in the wall of the aorta. Aortic dissections are 3 times more common among men and are more common among blacks (specifically African-Americans) and less common among Asians. About three fourths of aortic dissections occur in people aged 40 to 70. Understanding Aortic Dissection In an aortic dissection, the inner layer (lining) of the aortic wall tears, and blood surges through the tear, separating (dissecting) the middle layer from the outer layer of the wall. As a result, a new, false channel forms in the wall.

    Background information Many schools which are involved in the Salmonids in the Classroom Program with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game have been able to extend their studies in many ways. One extension activity that has been well received by teachers and by students is the conducting of a salmon dissection. What follows is a series of activities, questions and responses that might be appropriate to draw from the class as a dissection progresses. The suggestions follow the order that will naturally be taken as the salmon is dissected, looking first at the external features and progressing until the fish is completely dissected. This is a lesson in comparative physiology, so time should be taken to draw comparisons between how a fish behaves in its environment and how other animals, and people, behave in theirs. It is suggested that the topics be discussed, the appropriate anatomical part be removed, and then a review be conducted as the parts are being passed around so that everyone can see each part before the next step is taken. The Stanford University Medical Center's Bassett Collection consists of more than 1500 gorgeous photographs of human dissection from the middle of the last century. Stanford anatomy professor David Bassett was considered a master of dissection and his photographs are still used widely in anatomy textbooks. Now, the gorgeous annotated dissection photos are making their way online. The University has posted a selection of the photos for free on Flickr while eHuman.com is handling the commercial end of things. From Stanford's Medical Center Report Archive: It was Bassett’s genius for dissection that attracted the attention of William Gruber, the photographer who invented the View-Master, a stereoscopic viewing device familiar to most children. A 17-year collaboration between the two resulted in the production of the Stereoscopic Atlas of Human Anatomy begun in 1948 and not completed until 1962. It consisted of 221 View-Master reels with 1,554 color stereo views of dissections of every body region. Each stereo view was accompanied by a black-and-white, labeled drawing and explanatory text.
    “It was very popular nationally,” (curator Dr. Robert) Chase said. “When Bassett first showed the images, lines formed around the block to see them.”

      Dissections Online
      Dissections are a traditional part of the curriculum in introductory biology courses. This method of scientific investigation provides for students an opportunity to learn basic scientific skills such as to observe, examine, and document the characteristics of an organism under study. This guide provides online supplementary resources to performing animal dissections. You will find a brief explanation of how to search for sources on BISON Catalog . A selection of web dissection links are provided covering a variety of organism dissections. There is also a section on alternatives to dissections.
      Using the BISON Catalog
      When searching BISON for background information on dissections, you should consider words relating to the organism you are interested in so that you can find sources that include anatomical coverage of that particular organism. For instance, many textbooks on invertebrate zoology provide dissection illustrations for the invertebrate species (starfish, crayfish, insects, worms...) Vertebrate zoology textbooks would likely contain information about fishes, reptiles, birds, and mammals. More specific information on fish could be found in a book on ichthyology and more specific information on birds in a book on ornithology. Keep this in mind when using BISON . Searching by TITLE and SUBJECT would be more effective than a general KEYWORD search, although you can also try a keyword search

    The purpose of this lab activity is to help you learn the anatomy of a frog and give you a better understanding of the anatomy of vertebrate animals in general, including humans. This program provides still and motion visuals of preserved and pithed* frogs, in addition to text. *A pithed frog has had its central nervous system destroyed (its spinal cord has been severed). It is technically dead, but some of its organs continue to function for a brief period. Visuals of pithed frogs are found in the section on "Internal Organs."
    After completing this dissection, you should be able to:
    • Correctly identify the locations involved in the dissection procedures, and
    • Correctly identify the locations of the major organs within the body cavity of a frog, given a list of these organs.

    @import "/zzz/css/screen.css";
    The Airport Extreme, version n, dissected.
    Apple recently released their first "n-capable" base station. As usual, this base station is packaged in a beautiful case, whose form factor appears to have been chosen expressly to fit under a Apple-TV™ or Mac Mini™. Moreover, unlike previous base stations, it's design nods towards the need for cooling: The base station incorporates an intake strip around the edge at the bottom of the case, and the crease along the top is acts as an exhaust. Under the top cover, a thick heat sink acts as a case as well as a RFI shield. The heat sink is designed to transfer the heat from all the chips at the center of the ABS to the periphery, where the passive cooling via convection through the case is supposed to happen. In my opinion, this design is marginal and I have made the decision to remove the top white plastic exterior cover, permanently exposing the heat sink directly to ambient air. I hope to lower the internal temperatures this way, extending the life of all electronic components. After prying off the white plastic top, I also see no reason why the base station cannot be mounted vertically on a wall - the heat sink has plenty of exposure and is only warm to the touch. Plus, mounted vertically, the three antennas point in the three directions of the house that could actually contain a computer. Now I just have to find a way to mount everything on the wall... unlike the Express base station it replaced, the Extreme-n also has an external power supply, more wires, etc.
