For acquired dyslexia, see Alexia (disorder) Dyslexia is a learning disability that manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling . It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction. Evidence also suggests that dyslexia results from differences in how the brain processes written and/or spoken language . Although dyslexia is the result of a neurological difference, it is not an intellectual disability. Dyslexia occurs at all levels of intelligence; sub-average, average, above average, and highly gifted. A University of Hong Kong study argues that dyslexia affects different structural parts of children's brains depending on the language which the children read.

Why is dyslexia a gift?
Dyslexic people are visual, multi-dimensional thinkers. We are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning. Because we think in pictures, it is sometimes hard for us to understand letters, numbers, symbols, and written words. We can learn to read, write and study efficiently when we use methods geared to our unique learning style.

Hav ingdys lexiac anmake it hardtoread! Translation: Having dyslexia can make it hard to read! Writing that looks just fine to you might look like this to someone who has dyslexia. Dyslexia (say: dis- lek -see-uh) is a learning problem some kids have with reading and writing. It can make words look jumbled. This makes it difficult for a kid to read and remember what was read. So what's going on inside the person's brain ? A problem occurs in the brain, but it doesn't mean the person is dumb. Plenty of smart and talented people struggle with dyslexia. When someone has dyslexia, sometimes the messages the brain is sending get jumbled up or confused. A kid who has dyslexia might get frustrated and find it hard to do schoolwork. But the good news is that dyslexia doesn't need to keep a kid down.
What Is Having Dyslexia Like?
A kid who has dyslexia might start out doing fine in school. But gradually, it can become a struggle, especially when reading becomes an important part of schoolwork. A teacher might say that the kid is smart, but doesn't seem to be able to get the hang of reading. If a teacher or parent notices this, the best thing to do is to go to a specialist who can help figure out what's wrong.

Introduction
Dyslexia is an impairment in your brain's ability to translate written images received from your eyes into meaningful language. Also called specific reading disability, dyslexia is the most common learning disability in children, affecting 5 percent or more of all elementary-age children. Dyslexia may occur in children with normal vision and normal intelligence. Children with dyslexia usually have normal speech, but often have difficulty interpreting spoken language and writing. Treatment for dyslexia may involve a multisensory education program. Emotional support of your child on your part also plays an important role. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding. If a pupil you teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out. Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q); difficulties with left and right; difficulties with keeping organized; difficulties with spelling difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west); missing out words when reading.

A dyslectic reader uses the right by mistake.
Switch the reader over to the left where the programming is built in for reading and spelling. RfS/EL was designed to make that switch.
The previously dyslectic student can finally do academic work that reflects his ability instead of his reading problem.

What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia has been around for a long time and has been defined in different ways. For example, in 1968, the World Federation of Neurologists defined dyslexia as "a disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing, and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities." According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, dyslexia is a learning disability that can hinder a person's ability to read, write, spell, and sometimes speak. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability in children and persists throughout life. The severity of dyslexia can vary from mild to severe. The sooner dyslexia is treated, the more favorable the outcome; however, it is never too late for people with dyslexia to learn to improve their language skills.

The Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) is a nonprofit organization serving children and adults with dyslexia. We envision a new world for children and adults with dyslexia: a world in which they feel good about themselves and look forward to the future with hope and confidence; a world in which they receive the kind of instruction they need, in a nurturing environment; a world in which they are understood and encouraged to develop their potential; and a world in which they can participate fully in the workplace and in their communities. MDI is committed to bringing about this new world.
Estimates of the number of persons with dyslexia in the United States range from under two percent to over twenty percent of the population. While much research has been done, thousands of articles have been written, and successful teaching strategies have been in use for over 60 years, ignorance continues to be the number one enemy of dyslexia.
In response, MDI has presented hundreds of public awareness programs throughout the State of Michigan on what dyslexia is and what can be done about it. For further information, call the Central Office at 517-485-4000. A newsletter

About
Developmental dyslexia is a condition related to poor reading. Children with dyslexia have difficulty learning to read due to one or more information processing problems such as visual perceptual or auditory perceptual deficits. Many but not all children with dyslexia have difficulty with reversals of numbers, letters or words. New research points the way to specific methods of instruction that can help anyone learn to read well no matter what the underlying problem may be. Following the links will provide interesting new information as well as extremely effective solutions for all types of reading problems including developmental dyslexia.

A joint organizational policy statement of the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association Many children and adults continue to struggle with learning in the classroom and the workplace. Advances in information technology, its expanding necessity, and its accessibility are placing greater demands on people for efficient learning and information processing. Learning is accomplished through complex and interrelated processes, one of which is vision. Determining the relationships between vision and learning involves more than evaluating eye health and visual acuity (clarity of sight). Problems in identifying and treating people with learning-related vision problems arise when such a limited definition of vision is employed. This policy statement addresses these issues, which are important to individuals who have learning-related vision problems (such as dyslexia), their families, their teachers, the educational system and society.

Symptoms of Dyslexia
Summary of Warning Signs
: No two people with dyslexia are exactly alike because dyslexia ranges from mild to moderate to severe to profound. Some people with dyslexia also have AD/HD. Therefore, someone with dyslexia may not have every single symptom listed below. But they will have many of them. Professional testers look for a "constellation" or cluster of symptoms in the following areas. If someone struggles with spelling, is a slow reader who has a difficult time sounding out unknown words, and has difficulty getting their great thoughts down on paper in acceptable form, AND that person has 3 or more of these classic warning signs, it is worth getting that person tested for dyslexia.

How to Recognize Dyslexia in Children Dyslexia in Children: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Reading and learning are the two things that determine the success of a child during his school career. Is the Shoe Perhaps on the Wrong Foot?
Reading is the most important skill that a child must acquire at school, because one must learn to read to be able to read to learn. The implication of this is that the child who is a poor reader will usually also be a poor learner. Unfortunately poor reading skills, and therefore poor learning skills, have become a reality for an alarming number of people. Perhaps it has become time to put the shoe on the other foot… By Susan du Plessis
