What is Dyslexia?
'Dys' means 'difficulty' and 'lexia 'means 'words'. Dyslexia is a disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. It is
one type of specific learning disability that affects a person's ability to read.
A Dyslexic learns at his/her own level and pace, and typically excels in one or more other areas. Some of their experiences
include difficulties with concentration, perception, memory, verbal skills, abstract reasoning, hand-eye coordination, social adjustment (low self-esteem is a commonly observed behavioral characteristic), poor grades, and underachievement. Often, people with Dyslexia are considered to be lazy, rebellious, class clowns, unmotivated, misfits, or of low intelligence. These misconceptions, without understanding dyslexia's effect on the person's life, lead to rejection, isolation, feelings of

What Is Dyslexia? Depending on the educational jurisdiction, the term 'Dyslexia' may or may not be used to define a disability in reading. Some educational jurisdictions refer to Dyslexia as a type of learning disability pertaining to reading. However, Dyslexia is often described as a reading disorder or a disability affecting reading or the impairment of the ability to read. Typically, those with Dyslexia have a normal intelligence. The prevalence of Dyslexia has been estimated to occur in between 5-10% of the population. Dyslexia symptoms can range from mild to severe. Categories Affected by Dyslexia Reading
Dyslexics will often confuse letters (b for d, p for b etc.) and say words backwards (tac for cat) and will often omit simple words in sentences. Word and letter reversals are common as are the omissions of small words and parts of words. Their ability to see the sequence in words or sentences is somewhat scrambled. Their visual and phonetic memory is extremely weak which causes the deficits in reading.

This simulation demonstrates some common symptoms of dyslexia. You are given 60 seconds to read a paragraph aloud. The letters in this paragraph are reversed, inverted, transposed, and spelling is inconsistent. There will be two questions to answer at the end of the 60 seconds, so you must decipher the words as best as you can. This is a sample view of the timed reading exercise. This was designed to give users an idea of the frustrations a person with dyslexia could experience while using the web. Note This simulation requires Macromedia Flash - external link and may not be fully accessible to individuals using screen readers. WebAIM is working on a fully accessible version of this simulation.

The study found that sound training via computer exercises can literally rewire children's brains, correcting the sound processing problem and improving reading. According to the study's first author, Nadine Gaab, PhD , of the Developmental Medicine Center Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience at Children's Hospital Boston, the finding may someday help clinicians diagnose dyslexia even before reading begins, and suggests new ways of treating dyslexia, such as musical training. Children with developmental dyslexia have reading problems. The idea that they may have an underlying problem processing sound was introduced by

What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a complex language problem. It has to do with the way the brain works, not with vision. It involves not being able to break a word down into the sounds that make it up, and not being able to write and think about the sounds in a word. Kids with dyslexia have brains that work differently to process language. They have problems translating language to thought (in listening or reading) and thought to language (in writing or speaking). How common is dyslexia? Dyslexia is the most common learning disability (LD); 80 percent of students with LDs have dyslexia ]. It affects more boys than girls Why is early diagnosis and treatment so important? When dyslexia is not found and treated early on, it tends to snowball. As kids get more and more behind in school, they may become more and more frustrated, feeling like a failure. Often, self-esteem problems lead to bad behavior and other problems . When dyslexia is not noticed or not treated, it can cause adult
