All About Earthquakes
Whether occurring naturally or caused by man, earthquakes most often manifest themselves by a shaking of the ground. Most earthquakes are tectonic and occur when the frictional stress of gliding plate boundaries exceeds a certain value and causes a failure at a fault line, which results in a violent displacement of the EarthÂ’s crust. At this point, elastic strain energy is released and elastic waves are radiated, leading to an earthquake . Induced earthquakes may happen for a variety of reasons, including extraction of minerals from Earth and the collapse of large buildings. Visit LiveScience.com for the most relevant earthquake information. Read our news articles and participate in our interactive features , and come to understand why recent earthquakes have occurred. That's about the average speed of a tectonic plate. But wait around long enough, and even the tortoise crawl of plate tectonics will have dramatic and deadly consequences. Though plate tectonics is a global phenomenon and virtually invisible to us in our daily lives, it introduces enormous stresses in the crust where we live. From time to time, stressed-out crust releases the stress in sudden fits: earthquakes.
More frequently than time to time, actually. If you imagine the Earth as a giant bell, it's ringing with earthquakes every second of the day from the many imperceptible clinks of microquakes to the deafening gong of very occasional but "great" earthquakes (those of magnitude 8.0 or greater). The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that several million temblors, most undetectable, happen every day. The great earthquake of 1906 devastated San Francisco, killing 700.

http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/class/100/plate-tectonics.html
Plate Tectonics, the Cause of Earthquakes
The plates consist of an outer layer of the Earth, the lithosphere , which is cool enough to behave as a more or less rigid shell. Occasionally the hot asthenosphere of the Earth finds a weak place in the lithosphere to rise buoyantly as a plume, or hotspot. The satellite image below shows the volcanic islands of the Galapagos hotspot.
(from NASA) Only lithosphere has the strength and the brittle behavior to fracture in an earthquake. The map below locates earthquakes around the globe. They are not evenly distributed; the boundaries between the plates grind against each other, producing most earthquakes. So the lines of earthquakes help define the plates:
(from the USGS) In cross section, the Earth releases its internal heat by convecting, or boiling much like a pot of pudding on the stove. Hot asthenospheric mantle rises to the surface and spreads laterally, transporting oceans and continents as on a slow conveyor belt. The speed of this motion is a few centimeters per year, about as fast as your fingernails grow. The new lithosphere, created at the ocean spreading centers, cools as it ages and eventually becomes dense enough to sink back into the mantle. The subducted crust releases water to form volcanic island chains above, and after a few hundred million years will be heated and recycled back to the spreading centers.
Earthquake occurrence in different plate tectonic settings:
The map below of Earth's solid surface shows many of the features caused by plate tectonics. The oceanic ridges are the asthenospheric spreading centers, creating new oceanic crust. Subduction zones appear as deep oceanic trenches. Most of the continental mountain belts occur where plates are pressing against one another. The white squares locate examples given here of the different tectonic and earthquake environments.

Natural Hazards - Earthquakes
Earthquakes are one of the most costly natural hazards faced by the Nation, posing a significant risk to 75 million Americans in 39 States. The risks that earthquakes pose to society, including death, injury, and economic loss, can be greatly reduced by (1) better planning, construction, and mitigation practices before earthquakes happen, and (2) providing critical and timely information to improve response after they occur. As part of the multi-agency National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has the lead Federal responsibility to provide notification of earthquakes in order to enhance public safety and to reduce losses through effective forecasts based on the best possible scientific information.

POSTED 3 NOVEMBER 2005
Asian earthquake tragedy
More than 50,000 are dead, and about 3 million homeless, after a large earthquake shook Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province on Oct. 8. With mountain villages and roads destroyed, hundreds of thousands are still waiting for relief as winter approaches. Fortunately, the death toll will never approach that of the disastrous Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake, which started a tsunami that devastated coastlines from Sumatra to India and killed an estimated 285,000. The Indian Ocean quake was the strongest in 40 years, and it struck a region where a cataclysmic earthquake was not expected. In the aftermath of the Oct. 8 earthquake, residents wander in disbelief through a city in Pakistan AP photo Those death tolls make us think it's time to get a better grip on earthquake science. How does the Earth shake? Can we expect any improvements in earthquake prediction? Are we getting better at pinpointing their hazards? Earthquakes are ground motion that occurs when adjacent parts of the Earth suddenly slide past each other. Most earthquakes occur at boundaries between the giant plates that make up Earth's crust. These plates "float" on deep, hot, gooey rock called the mantle, slowly moving in relation to each other, at speeds of up to a few centimeters a year.
After a huge earthquake last December, tsunami waves struck Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, causing horrific devastation along the coast.

They are an important part of the island-building processes that have shaped the Island of Hawai`i and the other Hawaiian Islands. Thousands of earthquakes occur every year beneath the Island of Hawai`i. Eruptions and magma movement within the presently active volcanoes (Kilauea, Mauna Loa and Lo`ihi) are usually accompanied by numerous small earthquakes. They originate in regions of magma storage or along the paths that magma follows as it rises and moves prior to eruption. These are loosely termed volcanic earthquakes. Many other earthquakes, including the largest ones, occur in areas of structural weakness at the base of Hawai`i's volcanoes or deep within the Earth's crust beneath the island. These are referred to as tectonic earthquakes. In the past 150 years, several strong tectonic earthquakes (magnitude 6 to 8) caused extensive damage to roads, buildings, and homes, triggered local tsunami, and resulted in loss of life. The most destructive earthquake in Hawai`i's history occurred on April 2, 1868, when 81 people lost their lives. With a magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum intensity of XII, this destructive earthquake destroyed more than a hundred homes and generated a 15-m high tsunami along Kilauea's south coast.

http://42explore.com/quakes.htm
The Topic:
Earthquakes Easier - An earthquake makes the ground move or shake. These natural events can cause massive damage and destruction. The study of earthquakes is called seismology. Harder - An earthquake is caused by sudden, violent shifting of massive rocks called plates under the earth's surface. This movement of the plates releases stress that accumulates along geologic faults. A fault is a deep crack that marks the boundary between two of these plates. Earthquake belts occur along faults around the world. Many run along coastal areas. The San Andreas fault in central California is well-known for causing severe earthquakes. The epicenter is the point on the surface where the earthquake is the strongest. The Richter scale is used to measure the amount of energy released by the earthquake. The severity of an earthquake runs from to 9 on this scale. Small tremors occur constantly, but every few months a major earthquake occurs somewhere in the world. Scientists are researching ways to predict earthquakes, but their predictions are not always accurate.
