Printer Friendly document.write("Email This") E ating Disorders: A General Guide for Teens Eating disorders are more common in cultures focused on weight loss and body image. Body dissatisfaction and dieting may lead to unhealthy and dangerous eating behaviors. Sometimes, these eating patterns can lead to eating disorders. Fortunately, there has been an increased awareness about these types of illnesses. Eating disorders are treatable. There are resources and specialists that can help! What are eating disorders? There are three types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and ED-NOS (Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified). Young women with these disorders often have an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image. The phrase "body image" means the thoughts and feelings people have about their physical appearance. Young women with eating disorders may start to eat less because they are afraid of gaining weight. Sometimes they binge (overeat, consuming very large quantities of food) and sometimes purge this food (by self inducing vomiting, over-exercising or using laxatives). Eating disorders affect a person's physical and emotional health. They are very dangerous illnesses and can be fatal if they are not treated. What is anorexia nervosa?

It's common for kids - particularly teens - to be concerned about how they look and to feel self-conscious about their weight. During puberty, kids' bodies are changing dramatically and they are facing new social pressures, like attraction to the opposite sex. Unfortunately, for a growing proportion of kids and teens, that concern grows into an obsession that causes dramatic weight fluctuation, interferes with normal daily life, and damages vital body functions. Up to 10 million teens develop eating disorders, abnormal attitudes and behaviors with foods, which include

advertisement body.dysmorphic.disorder: when.the.mirror.lies No matter how much weight is lost, or no matter how much food is thrown up, the person with anorexia or bulimia will constantly see the same overweight, vile, failure in the mirror. This typically leads to very destructive and even deadly methods of weight loss in a desperate attempt to lose the distorted perception - in this case, fat (failure). It is very hard, though, for anyone that does not have an eating disorder to be able to understand just how someone could do this to themselves - go through hospitilizations and near death experiences even - but continually see themselves so distorted. Even though Body Dysmorphic disorder isn't just shown in cases of eating disorders (someone afflicted with BDD can obsess not about weight, but instead about their hair, nose, chest, etc.), it still hurts and ruins the lives of whoever is afflicted with it. about.body.dysmorphic.disorder

Elisa Ruth McCall was a vibrant, beautiful college student, who like many her age, suffered from the pain and unhappines of an eating disorder illness. When her life ended prematurely at age 20 she hoped to reach out to those suffering like her and to others in danger of developing eating disorders.
She left an important legacy in the form of her personal journal a record of her struggle which she intened to be shared with others. Through this journal, Elisa wanted to bring a message of hope and inspiration to those who suffer.
Elisa's family has established the Elisa Ruth McCall Memorial Endowment Fund at Southern Methodist University for the purpose of providing individuals and their loved ones with the education and support required to avoid or overcome eating disorder illnesses.

Any of several psychological disorders relating to the consumption of food, such as anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are characterized by an abnormal fear of obesity, distorted body image, and subsequent abnormal eating patterns. Anorexia is marked by obsessive fasting; bulimia by eating binges followed by self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives. The effects of these disorders range from mild weight loss to delayed sexual development, heart problems, depression, and even death. Both conditions have their roots in social pressures; most cases occur among middle- and upper-class adolescent girls. Some specialists distinguish a third eating disorder, binge eating disorder, which is characterized by frequent periods of uncontrolled, compulsive eating, resulting in obesity and distress; it is typically associated with anxiety or depression. Other eating disorders include rumination disorder, which generally occurs during infancy and involves repeated regurgitation; and pica, found primarily among young children and characterized by the eating of various non-nutritive substances, such as plaster, paint, or leaves.

Eating Disorders Program
E ating disorders are affecting increasing numbers or people of all ages. Preoccupations with food and body image can escalate into a pattern of unhealthy eating behavior that, if left untreated, can lead to the potentially life threatening disorders of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Individuals often seek to control their lives by embracing a destructive regimen of dieting and overeating, bingeing and purging. At The Institute of Living we believe that early identification and comprehensive treatment increase the possibility of recovery and health restoration, and minimize the suffering of those afflicted and their families. The Institute of Living offers a specialized program for the treatment of eating disorders in adolescents and adults. The Partial Hospital Service is our primary treatment modality, however, inpatient treatment is available on our general psychiatric unit. The initial assessment is provided by an eating disorder specialist. Treatment recommendations are geared toward the individual needs of the patient, to provide comprehensive treatment in the least restrictive environment possible.

Eating Disorders Real Life Story - Teen Creates 'Real Barbie' to Fight Eating Disorders Easton (Mass.) Journal, March 4, 2005 By Cathy Knipper, Correspondent Doll Statue On Tour To Counter Unrealistic Body Image Expectations She is the one who every girl hopes will be at her birthday party. Her clothes are stylish, she always looks so together, everyone wants to be like her. Her name is Barbie, but the image she promotes is not all that pretty, and it is one that the professionals and volunteers of the South Shore Eating Disorder Collaborative (SSEDC) hope to shatter with their “Get Real Barbie” tour. The SSEDC is a group of clinicians providing care for those coping with eating disorders. It was founded by Kathleen Burns Kingsbury of Easton. Kingsbury is a mental health counselor and co-authored the book, “Weight Wisdom: Affirmations to Free You From Food and Body Concerns,” with fellow Easton resident and SSEDC member Mary Ellen Williams. To promote National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, (Feb. 27- March 5) the members of SSEDC have built and designed a paper mache statue of Barbie who will travel from Easton to Boston Children’s Hospital, and then on to schools and hospitals throughout the South Shore area.

Eating disorders can occur with other psychiatric disorders such as depressive disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and panic or anxiety disorders. Those who suffer from eating disorders can experience a various physical health problems, including heart conditions and failure of the kidneys which could result in death. It is extremely important that you seek help for yourself or someone you know because eating disorders can be treated successfully.
Eating is controlled by many factors, including appetite, food availability, family, peer, and cultural practices, and attempts at voluntary control. Dieting to a body weight leaner than needed for health is highly promoted by current fashion trends, sales campaigns for special foods, and in some activities and professions. Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight.
Researchers are investigating how and why initially voluntary behaviors, such as eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, at some point move beyond control in some people and develop into an eating disorder. Studies on the basic biology of appetite control and its alteration by prolonged overeating or starvation have uncovered enormous complexity, but in the long run have the potential to lead to new pharmacologic treatments for eating disorders.

Eating disorders (specifically anorexia and bulimia) are now seen as serious problems. The media has reported extensively on the deaths of many well-known performers and athletes who have died from eating disorders. Athletes Who Died of Eating Disorders In 1994, world class gymnast Christy Henrich died after her struggle with anorexia and bulimia. In the late '80s, 4'10" Christy weighed 90 lbs. It's been reported that she was told by a U.S. gymnastics judge that she needed to lose weight if she hoped to make the 1988 Olympic team. When she died of multiple organ failure in 1994, 22-year-old Christy weighed less than 60 lbs. In 1997, 22-year-old ballerina Heidi Guenther collapsed and died from complications arising from her eating disorder. Heidi was a well-known dancer with the Boston Ballet. At 5'3" tall, Heidi weighed less than 93 lbs at the time of her death. Commenting on eating disorders in the dance world, Lea Thompson (actress

What are Eating Disorders? Eating disorders are dangerous eating habits that may cause problems with your body and your mind.
    http://www.tqnyc.org/NYC063563/eating_disorders.html
    Eating Disorders
    What are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders are dangerous eating habit s that may cause problems with your body and your mind. Any one with an eating disorder causes damage to their body because they are not giving their body the nutrition it needs. They damage their self-esteem because they don't like the way they look or feel.
What are Some Types of Eating Disorders?
The two types of eating disorders almost everyone has heard about are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia is a disease where people starve themselves. They eat very little. Bulimia is an eating disorder where people binge, they eat huge amounts of food, and afterwards make themselves vomit everything out or use laxatives or water pills so their body gets rid of the food and they don't gain weight. You know a person has Binge Eating Disorder when they eat a lot of food in a short amount of time and can't stop eating even when they feel full. They might feel depressed or guilty after they've eaten all that food.   Disordered Eating means that a person may cut down on what they eat, they binge, or they throw up, but they don't do it as often as someone who has Anorexia, Bulimia or Binge Eating Disorder.
