MeSH Ebola is the common term for a group of viruses belonging to genus Ebola , family Filoviridae , and for the disease which they cause, Ebola hemorrhagic fever . The viruses are characterised by a long, filamentous morphology surrounded by a protein/lipid viral envelope . Ebola viruses are morphologically similar to the Marburg virus , also in the family Filoviridae , and share similar disease symptoms. Ebola has caused a number of serious and highly publicized outbreaks since its discovery.

The Ebola virus first came to notice in 1976 in outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in Zaire and Sudan The strain of Ebola which broke out in Zaire has one of the highest case fatality rates of any human pathogenic virus, roughly 90%. The strain which broke out later in Sudan has a mortality of approximately 50%. The virus is believed to be initially transmitted to a human via contact with an infected animal host. From the first human infected, the virus is then transmitted by human contact with infected blood and bodily fluids of a diseased person, and by human contact with contaminated medical equipment, such as needles. Both of these infectious mechanisms will occur in clinical (

Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) is one of the most virulent viral diseases known to humankind, causing death in 50-90% of all clinically ill cases. Several different species of Ebola virus have been identified. The Ebola virus is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected persons.Transmission of the Ebola virus has also occurred by handling ill or dead infected chimpanzees. Introduction
Ebola is one of the most lethal viruses that infects primates. It has a mortality rate that ranges from 53-88%. It is endemic to Africa and to the Philippines. Due to its highly pathogenic nature, scientific research conducted on Ebola must be conducted in a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (AIDS/HIV is a Biosafetly Level 2 virus). The constraint on scientific research that its nature has dictated has resulted in many significant gaps in what is known about it, and even larger gaps in what has been published about it. Its highly pathogenic nature has also resulted in a notable amount of misinformation that has been published. This web site is designed to present, in a review style, the data, previously published and unpublished, known about it to fill the knowledge gaps and to correct the misinformation.

      Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever: Fact Sheet
      What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever?
Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. The virus is one of two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae. Three of the four species of Ebola virus identified so far have caused disease in humans: Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, and Ebola-Ivory Coast. The fourth, Ebola-Reston, has caused disease in nonhuman primates, but not in humans.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever has made worldwide news because of its destructive potential. Causes Return to top Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola fever) is caused by a virus belonging to the family called Filoviridae. Scientists have identified four types of the Ebola virus. Three have been reported to cause disease in humans: Ebola-Zaire virus; Ebola-Sudan virus; and the Ebola-Ivory virus. The human disease has so far been limited to parts of Africa. The disease has so far been limited to parts of Africa. A very small number of people in the United States who were infected with the fourth type of the virus known as Ebola Reston did not develop any signs of disease. The disease can be passed to humans from infected animals and animal materials. Ebola can also be spread between humans by close contact with infected bodily fluids or through infected needles in the hospital.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
  • Ebola hemorrhagic fever is caused by several Ebola viruses. The source of these viruses in nature is not known. People can get Ebola hemorrhagic fever by direct contact with virus-infected blood, body fluids, organs, or semen. There is no known cure or treatment. Recent outbreaks in humans have occurred in areas where medical supplies and care were inadequate. The outbreaks were controlled by using barrier nursing techniques. Under normal circumstances, travelers are at low risk of getting the disease. To eliminate the risk, travelers should avoid areas where Ebola outbreaks are occurring.
What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever Ebola hemorrhagic fever is one of the deadliest of a group of diseases called viral hemorrhagic fevers. They range in seriousness from relatively mild illnesses to severe and potentially fatal diseases. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. Depending on the virus, the disease can get worse until the patient becomes very ill with breathing problems, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), kidney problems, and shock. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses from four families: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods (such as ticks and mosquitoes). In some cases, the natural host for the virus is not known.

Since the release of such popular books and movies like Outbreak and The Hot Zone "ebola" has come to mean much more than just a disease, it is now a business, a career, and an attitude. I would even go so far as to say that ebola is a psychological condition.
Ebola: 1. (v.) Acting in a manner that is out of control, crazy, insane, Ebola . Ex: Chuck came in and went completely Ebola , he threw a desk and strangled that poor kid.
2. (adj.) Word used to describe someone or something that frequently acts in an ebola manner. Ex: how would I describe Chuck? Well, he's nice, but kind of Ebola if you know what I mean.
As you can see, the connotations of the word Ebola are many and growing fast. These connotations are derived from the erratic behavior of monkeys in the movie Outbreak , and the extremely violent nature of the virus itself. Someone acting in an Ebola manner can be described as being in a

Dr. Frederick A. Murphy Talks about the Ebola Virus
An Interview by Sean Henahan, Access Excellence The book "The Hot Zone" and the film "Outbreak" have seized the public's imagination and brought into focus many issues regarding the very real threats posed by new and emerging diseases. In this interview we talk with Frederick A. Murphy , D.V.M., Ph.D., Dean of School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis. At the time of the 'Reston incident', Dr. Murphy was the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC in Atlanta. Dr. Murphy is considered one of the world authorities on viruses. He was the first one to look at Ebola virus 'face-to-face' in the electron microscope. Dr. Murphy appears in "The Hot Zone" and his now famous photo of the Ebola virus appears in the film "Outbreak". Note:
Dr. Murphy has also provided an extensive bibliography and three excellent electron micrographs to accompany this interview. Q: The book "The Hot Zone" and more recently the film "Outbreak" have brought public attention to the reality of emerging viruses and potentially disastrous epidemics. It can be difficult to tell fact from fiction with these kind of sources. I'd like to ask some questions gathered from high school science teachers and students all over the country to clarify some of the issues raised by this book and this movie. A: The public response to the book and the film has been phenomenal. Half of the posts for a virology conference on the Internet I look at are about the Ebola virus. I myself have had innumerable calls from the press and other media people. By the way, I want to say hello to the Access Excellence people and say I had a great time down at Genentech last summer when I spoke on the subject of new and emerging diseases.

Congo's Ebola Outbreak Could Be Worst in Years
By Craig Timberg Washington Post Foreign Service Wednesday, September 19, 2007; Page A19 JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 18 International medical personnel and supplies are being airlifted to a remote region of central Congo to combat what threatens to become the world's most serious outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in years. Only nine cases of the disease have been confirmed by laboratory tests. But medical authorities suspect the virus has killed 168 people and sickened 375 others across a heavily forested region where villages are linked only by deeply rutted dirt roads. Health officials said it is possible that new cases will continue to emerge over the coming months.
