Significant Points
  • Slower than average job growth is expected as firms increasingly employ workers with titles that reflect specialized duties rather than the general title of economist. Job seekers with a background in economics should have opportunities in various occupations. Candidates who hold a master’s or Ph.D. degree in economics will have the best employment prospects and advancement opportunities. Quantitative skills are important in all economics specialties.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Economists study how society distributes resources, such as land, labor, raw materials, and machinery, to produce goods and services. They may conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends, or develop forecasts. Economists research a wide variety of issues including energy costs, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, business cycles, taxes, and employment levels, among others. Economists develop methods for obtaining the data they need. For example, sampling techniques may be used to conduct a survey and various mathematical modeling techniques may be used to develop forecasts. Preparing reports, including tables and charts, on research results also is an important part of an economist’s job. Presenting economic and statistical concepts in a clear and meaningful way is particularly important for economists whose research is intended for managers and others who do not have a background in economics. Some economists also perform economic analysis for the media.

Editor: Bill Goffe
Dept. of Economics, SUNY Oswego
Editorial Assistant: Marian Aboud

This guide is sponsored by the American Economic Association . It lists more than 2,000 resources in 97 sections and sub-sections available on the Internet of interest to academic and practicing economists, and those interested in economics. Almost all resources are also described. In selecting resources for RFE, I exercise some editorial judgment and select items that either offer a substantial amount of information, or are specialized to a given area. Those searching the Internet for economic information might also wish to try the Economics Search Engine (ESE) . It indexes 11,000 economics web sites from around the world. Searches with it only return their contents. The Complete Table of Contents is for those who want a list of all resources in this guide. From there you can go to a resource quickly simply click on its name. A link to an extended description here in RFE is denoted by "details..." As the Complete Table of Contents is quite large, there is also an

Income Volatility
There's a lot being written about free trade today, e.g. see this discussion from Greg Mankiw (some of the discussion is about technological change rather than free trade, but it has the same characteristics in terms of displacing labor, Free Exchange explains how trade and technology are related here ). Given these discussions, perhaps it's a good time to recall that it's not just the level and distribution of income that matters, it's also the volatility, and according to the latest estimates from Jacob Hacker and Elizabeth Jacobs, family income volatility has been rising in recent decades: Income volatility: Another source of growing economic insecurity, by Jacob Hacker and Elisabeth Jacobs : There are many dimensions to the economic insecurity facing American families today. Mid-level incomes have stagnated in real terms over the past few years, and most recently, higher gas and food prices are taking a larger bite out of paychecks. But one dimension of economic insecurity gets less attention: the increase in family income volatility, or how much families' incomes fluctuate up and down over time.
Recent analysis shows that families are facing much greater income swings than they did a generation ago. The

For reasons that I do not understand, there has been a recent spurt of newpaper and news magazine articles in praise of good economistspeople who are very smart, very thoughtful, and very interested in trying to make economic policy better. Such articles include:
  • one on Princeton international economist Paul Krugman from Newsweek.
    • As everyone knows, I am a huge fan and admirer of M.I.T. economist Paul Krugman (even given occasional... erratic moments, like his unprovoked and unfair comments on the very capable Laura D'A. Tyson in 1992-1993).
    • This is my favorite Krugman essay: " An Unequal Exchange ".
  • one on the Berkeley Economics Department from The Wall Street Journal.
  • one on Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin from The Wall Street Journal.
  • The Wall Street Journal also has profiles of George Borjas and of Fred Bergsten that I do not have copies of.
  • A not-so-serious toast in praise of my ex-freshman-roommate and very good friend Andrei Shleifer , 1999 recipient of the Clark Medal awarded biennially to the most outstanding economist under forty.
  • A page on John Maynard Keynes
  • A page on Adam Smith
  • A page on Friedrich Hayek
  • Allan Meltzer is not one of my favorite people
  • An appalling example of the lack of economic literacy , from the Wall Street Journal editorial page.

Austrian Economics as a Progressive Research Community: Roger Koppl
Some of our readers have questioned whether the contemporary Austrian school of economics is making any progress. Some have questioned applied work, others believe they have identified fundamental flaws in the theoretical system, and yet others just think the Austrian school has outlived its usefulness altogether.
To counter this, I suggested that we provide links to contemporary Austrian economists and their work to see if this would at least give us a place to start the conversation rather than continually going backward in time to the writings of Mises and Hayek, or even Rothbard and Kirzner. The first place I would suggest that students and curious colleagues start would be to read all the SDAE presidential addresses since the organization was founded. The only address not published in the RAE was Karen Vaughn's original presidential address which was published in Advances in Austrian Economics. If you are interested in getting an electronic copy just email Peter Lipsey at plipsey@gmu.edu, the others are available either at the RAE website at GMU or at the Springer website that most university libraries subscribe to.

Games Economists Play:
Non-Computerized Classroom-Games for College Economics
by Greg Delemeester and Jurgen Brauer
This web site is a resource for instructors of economics who would like to use non-computerized economic experiments (games) in their classrooms. The bulk of the website consists of an extensively annotated and hyperlinked compilation of more than 170 classroom games, most of which can be played within one class period. The purpose of the games is to help teach fundamental micro and macroeconomic concepts. The web site is organized around two tables that classify the games according to subject matter, objectives, class size, game variations, etc. A bibliographic source and/or contact reference is provided for each game. Whenever possible, each game is hyperlinked to (i) similar or related games, (ii) the author's email address, and (iii) a website where the full game description can be accessed (if available). A separate link to a complete games bibliography follows the tables. Table 1 classifies experiments for the Principles of Microeconomics course. The table is divided into three sections covering (i) the basic elements of economic analysis (supply and demand, perfect and imperfect markets, etc.), (ii) applying the basics (international trade and currency markets), and (iii) beyond the basics (market imperfections and government intervention).
