Ecuador Diocese of Loja So keen was his desire for this foundation High up among the peaks of the Cordillera de los Andes, in the Sacred Valley, known as Vilcabamba in the Quechuan dialect of the Incas, in the province of Loja, Ecuador is our Tyburn Monasterio Puerta del Cielo : Gate of Heaven. Ever since we made our foundation in Peru in 1976 we have had requests from several dioceses to found a monastery in Ecuador but it was not until the courtesy visit paid to Bishop Hugolino when travelling through his diocese in early 2002, that he prevailed upon our sisters with heart-rending entreaty to help his people by making the witness of our life of Divine praise and Eucharistic adoration available to them in their spiritual need. In July 2002 foundations were laid for more of the monastery buildings and in August the church was completed in time for Bishop Hugolino to concelebrate with the Apostolic nuncio to Ecuador at a Mass of First Profession of one of our sisters. In these months we also managed to sink a viable well on our property so that the monastery has its own supply of fresh drinking water. In keeping with our apostolate of Benedictine hospitality the community has worked hard to provide facilities for retreats and opportunities for Eucharistic adoration for people of the surrounding areas and further afield. The Bishop wishes us to provide retreat facilities in order that we can draw people into our Benedictine life of praise and worship and so foster the prayer-life of the diocese. Two small guest cabins have been completed enabling retreatants to stay and various works of the apostolate include Bible study and prayer groups, and Oblates. A large garden for the laity has been landscaped where a pilgrimage shrine of Our Lady of Cisne is situated, blessed by Bishop Hugolino on 29 December 2003.

History
The history of pre-Inca Ecuador is lost in a misty tangle of time and legend, and the earliest historical details date back only as far as the 11th century AD. It is commonly believed that Asian nomads reached the South American continent by about 12,000 BC and were later joined by Polynesian colonizers. Centuries of tribal expansion, warfare and alliances resulted in the relatively stable Duchicela lineage, which ruled more or less peacefully for about 150 years until the arrival of the Incas around 1450 AD.

Archaeological evidence, indicates the presence of indigenous people in Ecuador for many thousands of years before the expansion of the Incas from Peru in the 1400s. It is generally accepted that the earliest inhabitants were Asian nomads who crossed what is now known as the Bering Strait some 25,000 years ago and began reaching the South American continent by about 12,000 BC. It is generally accepted that the earliest inhabitants were Asian nomads who crossed what is now known as the Bering Strait some 25,000 years ago and began reaching the South American continent by about 12,000 BC. It is believed that several thousand years later, trans-Pacific colonization by the island dwellers of Polynesia added to the population. Although Stone Age tools found in the Quito area have been dated to 9000 BC, the oldest signs of a more developed culture date back to 3200 BC. These belong to the Valdivia period and consist mainly of ceramics, especially small figurines, found in the central coastal area of Ecuador. Examples of these can be seen in the major museums of Quito and Guayaquil. Early Tribes The 11 th century AD saw two dominant tribes: Caras in the coastal areas and Quitus in the highlands. Later there was a peaceful expansion and these people became collectively known as the Shyri nation and were the dominant force in the Ecuadorian highlands until about 1300.

    Ecuador History - Pre-Inca Times
Although the earliest evidence of man in Ecuador can be traced back to 10,000 BC, there are few concrete facts about the country's history before the invasion of the Incas in the mid-15 th century. However, research is still ongoing, and The Museo Banco Central del Ecuador has some fascinating artifacts that are laid out to chart the probable development of the country before this time, from the age of hunter-gatherers to the dawn of pottery and ceramics, agriculture and fixed settlements. After the natives began to put down roots(between 500BC and 500AD), distinct cultures began to evolve, and by 1480, dominant Indian groups included Imbayas, Shyris, Quitus, Puruhaes and Caarisin the highlands, and the Caras, Manteos and Huancavilcas along the coast.

Home Study Abroad Ecuador The indigenous population was decimated by disease in the first decades of Spanish rule — a time when the natives also were forced into the "encomienda" labor system for Spanish landlords. In 1563, Quito became the seat of a royal "audiencia" (administrative district) of Spain and part of the Peruvian Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima. The 19th century was marked by instability, with a rapid succession of rulers. The conservative Gabriel Garcia Moreno unified the country in the 1860s with the support of the Roman Catholic Church. In the late 1800s, world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast. Recession and popular unrest led to a return to populist politics and domestic military interventions in the 1960s, while foreign companies developed oil resources in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In 1972, the construction of the Andian pipeline, which brought oil from the east to the coast was completed, making Ecuador South America's second largest oil producer. That same year a nationalist military junta overthrew the government, remaining in power until 1979 when more democratic constitutional measures were implemented. By 1982, the government faced an economic crisis, characterized by high inflation, budget deficits, a falling currency, mounting debt service, and uncompetitive industries, leading to chronic government instability. Many years of mismanagement, starting with the mishandling of the country's debt during the 1970s military regime, have left the country essentially ungovernable. By the mid 90s, the government of Ecuador has been characterized by a weak executive branch that struggles to appease the ruling classes, represented in the legislative and judiciary. The last three democratically elected presidents have failed to finish their terms during that period.

Modern patterns merely overlay the traditional, making present-day Ecuador a veritable living museum displaying its varied and rich heritage. Pre-Columbian Ecuador is reflected in the persistence of native languages, customs and economic activities among a considerable though diminishing number of communities in the Sierra (Andean highlands) and the Oriente (eastern region). The legacy of three centuries of Spanish colonial rule is also pervasive and includes a social inequality that largely coincides with race, rural land tenure patterns, and the nation's dominant European cultural expressions.
Analysts of Ecuador's post-independence political history have pointed to a number of persistent factors. Regionalism is especially prominent and is particularly expressed in the struggle for power between La Sierra represented by Quito, and La Costa (coastal region) represented by Guayaquil. Regionalism has coincided with the party struggle between the Quito-based Conservatives and the Guayaquil-based Liberals. Personal idealism which stems from the political prominence of military

    HISTORY
Advanced indigenous cultures flourished in Ecuador long before the area was conquered by the Inca empire in the 15th century. In 1534, the Spanish arrived and defeated the Inca armies, and Spanish colonists became the new elite. The indigenous population was decimated by disease in the first decades of Spanish rulea time when the natives were also forced into the "encomienda" labor system for Spanish landlords. In 1563, Quito became the seat of a royal "audiencia" (administrative district) of Spain. After independence forces defeated the royalist army in 1822, Ecuador joined Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Colombia, only to become a separate republic in 1830. The 19th century was marked by instability, with a rapid succession of rulers. The conservative Gabriel Garcia Moreno unified the country in the 1860s with the support of the Catholic Church. In the late 1800s, world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast. A coastal-based liberal revolution in 1895 under Eloy Alfaro reduced the power of the clergy and opened the way for capitalist development. The end of the cocoa boom produced renewed political instability and a military coup in 1925. The 1930s and 1940s were marked by populist politicians such as five-time president Jose Velasco Ibarra. In January 1942, Ecuador signed the Rio Protocol to end a brief war with Peru the year before; Ecuador agreed to a border that conceded to Peru much territory Ecuador previously had claimed in the Amazon. After World War II, a recovery in the market for agricultural commodities and the growth of the banana industry helped restore prosperity and political peace. From 1948-60, three presidentsbeginning with Galo Plazawere freely elected and completed their terms.
