Re:Help finding a lost... Help finding a lost camera Re:Price of Gas and My... Home Egypt Culture Written by peltours Egypt is a Middle Eastern country and has Middle Eastern customs. Whether Muslim or Copt, the Egyptians are deeply religious and religious principles govern their daily lives. Combined with religious belief is commitment to the extended family. Each family member is responsible for the integrity of the family and for the behaviour of other members, creating an environment that would be envied by many people in the West.
However, when westerners visit Egypt they are often apprehensive. Their views of Egyptians and Arabs, often formed from views by the media stories, often bear no relation to reality. Travellers are often surprised by their friendly, hospitable reception and take home with them good feelings about Egypt and its population.

Culture
For most Egyptians life and lifestyle have changed little for hundreds of years. The 20th century has certainly made impressions in the form of brand-name soda pop, Levis and TV. However, for the majority fellahin (peasant farmers) population, things today are much the same as they have always been. There's a prevailing attitude amongst most Egyptians that whatever will be will be. An almost fatalistic outlook prevails, born out of thousands of years of plague, famine, invasion and flood. Life for most Egyptians is prescribed by the same circumstances that existed for the generations before them. Painting has been part of Egyptian life since the first daubs were applied to the Pyramid of Unas at Saqqara in 24th century BC. But it was the Pharaohs of the New Kingdom who were especially keen on adorning the interiors of their tombs with vivid images of the afterworld and resurrection. Contemporary Egyptian painting was heavily influenced by western art and it wasn't until midway through this century that Egyptian painters began to break away from these influences. Some of the country's better known contemporary artists include Gazbia Serri, Inji Eflatoun, Abdel Wahab Morsi, Adel el-Siwi and Wahib Nasser. Popular music in Egypt meant, until recently, the ubiquitous voice of Om Kolthum, the 'mother of Egypt'. She died in 1975 but her music and her legend outlive her. Her songs, based on poetry and operettas, are the best known Egyptian music to western ears. Other notables were Abdel Halim al-Hafez and Mohammed Abd el-Wahaab. Elements of western pop music are increasingly being integrated into contemporary Egyptian music, and exponents of newer styles include Iheb Tawfik, Mohammed Fouad and Hakim.

The country is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most stunning ancient monuments, including pyramids, Karnak temple and the Valley of the Kings. Today, Egypt is widely considered the main political and cultural center of the Arab world.
Ancient Egypt is conceivably the most attractive of the ancient civilizations. Indeed, the Ancient Egyptian civilization was one of the longest in the west. What is astonishing about the Egyptian's culture is not their swift growth and expansion, but their capacity to conserve the past and overcome with comparatively little change. Ancient Egypt is a starting point in the history of western art. Pyramids and sphinxes have become symbols of Egypt.
The ancient Egyptians were a religious people. Two of the earliest religious cults were sun and nature. As an agricultural society, they depended upon the cyclical nature of the Nile floods to refill the lands with productive topsoil and they depended upon the sun to help produce a plentiful crop. Witnessing the natural processes of the earth likely influenced their beliefs in the next world. Egypt has been a nation for much longer than most. Menes, the first Pharaoh, united Upper and Lower Egypt in 3050 BC, creating a state whose inheritance is matchless in recorded history. Elaborate tombs were designed, glorious pyramids constructed, and a enormous and inspiring pantheon of deities was privileged in huge temples. The Nile was harnessed for irrigation. By any standard, this dynastic society was very successful.

Egyptian Cultural Head-Scratchers
Whenever you go 10,000 miles from home you're going to be presented with some cultural quirks that are surprising or amusing. Egypt had no lack of curiosities!
Since tourists occasionally get blown up and shot in Egypt, the country has worked hard to present the image that police and military protection has things all under control. "Image" is the operative word here what is this guy going to do if someone shoots at me from over the hill in the Valley of the Kings? Nada!
I thought heightened security after 9/11 in the US was the biggest joke until I came to Egypt. Every hotel and all attractions have metal detectors that you have to walk through, but 9 times out of 8 the thing will buzz (because you always have bags or something with you) and you're never stopped or even looked at funny. Here I am at the Oasis Hotel setting off the buzzer just like every other person that has ever walked through the door. I suppose that from a security standpoint this is analogous to installing seat belts in your car with duct tape.
Egypt's sub-100% rationality doesn't end with security you see it every night on the roads when everyone drives with their headlights off to save gas. If they're about to get in an accident (which is quite often, really) they'll turn on the lights briefly for safety. As an engineer, I will agree that it will save

In the future, many culturally diverse countries will be featured on our web site, including Egypt, Greece, Italy and Turkey. Once you're familiar with the country's heritage and beauty, you too may be compelled to come see egypt. The rich blending of egypt's three main regions contribute to the country's diversity and interest. The influence of the Habsburg empire has made Transylvania, a prosperous western oriented region. The other two regions, Moldova and Wallachia have preserved more of the Ottoman influence. The egyptn language is one of the five European romance languages, which French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Much like other latin cultures, egyptns have a love for life. While its history and language provide egypt with a strong cultural identity, it's the people that make it unique. Most travelers are surprised by the the warm welcome extended by the egyptn people to the country's visitors.

Culture, Customs and Conduct CULTURE Egypt is a Middle Eastern country and has Middle Eastern customs. Whether Muslim or Copt, the Egyptians are deeply religious and religious principles govern their daily lives. Combined with religious belief is commitment to the extended family. Each family member is responsible for the integrity of the family and for the behavior of other members, creating an environment that would be envied by many people in the West. Certainly, the result is that the city of Cairo is safer than any western metropolis. Yet when westerners visit Egypt they are often apprehensive. Their views of Egyptians and Arabs, fomented by unkind and untrue media stories, often bear no relation to reality. Travelers are often surprised by their friendly, hospitable reception and take home with them good feelings about Egypt and its population. Egyptians have been raised in a social environment steeped in Islam, a background that can color their decision-making in a way difficult for foreigners to understand. Yet it is precisely this training that makes Egyptians some of the most charming and helpful of hosts. By understanding the culture and with consideration for your hosts, you can be a welcome guest in Egypt. RELIGIOUS LIMITS Devout Muslims do not drink alcohol though most do not object to others imbibing in reasonable amounts. If in doubt, ask. In addition to the prohibition on alcohol, the faithful do not use drugs or eat pork, which is considered unclean. Explicit sexual materialmagazines, photos, tapes, or recordsis illegal and subject to confiscation.
