(September 2006) Emergency Medicine is a speciality of medicine that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses and injuries that require immediate medical attention. While not usually providing long-term or continuous care, emergency medicine physicians diagnose a wide array of pathology and undertake acute interventions to stabilize the patient. These professionals practice in hospital emergency departments , in the prehospital setting via emergency medical service and other locations where initial medical treatment of illness takes place. Just as clinicians operate by immediacy rules under large emergency systems, emergency practioniers aim to diagnose emergent conditions and stabilize the patient for definitive care. Urgent Care Centers are often staffed by physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners who may or may not be formally trained in emergency medicine. They offer primary care treatment to patients who desire or require immediate care, but who do not reach the acuity that requires care in an emergency department or admission to a hospital. Emergency Medicine encompasses a large amount of general medicine but involves virtually all fields of medicine and surgery including the surgical sub-specialties. Emergency physicians are tasked with seeing a large number of patients, treating their illnesses and arranging for disposition - either admitting them to the hospital or releasing them after treatment as necessary. The emergency physician requires a broad field of knowledge and advanced procedural skills often including surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support and advanced airway management. The program is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; it is one of the few programs in the country with this dual accreditation. "We think this is one of the best, if not the best, osteopathic training programs in emergency medicine in the country," says John W. Becher, D.O., Department Chairman, "Many of our former residents now hold director positions in emergency departments in various hospitals throughout the country. Because of that strong track record, the majority of our candidates come to us because they have been so impressed when working with 'Doctor so-and-so' and figure, 'If I can be half the doctor he or she is, I have to come here for my training.'" Raney, MD Division Director, Associate Professor Meet the next class of interns Well, we are firmly into the new residency and faired exceptionally well with our second year of matches- including two students from our own MUSC and one from the University of South Carolina as well! Click the above link to meet the class of 2011. A lot of other big changes have been happening-these are exciting times. Our first class has made huge strides over the last several months with everyone getting a sense that they are maturing and "feeling at home". Their level of comfort in everyday running of the business and department has given us all a great sense of pride and accomplishment. They are ready to begin their new role as mentors of the next set of interns. We successfully opened our Chest Pain Center in the new Ashley River Tower (ART) building. As we suspected, the numbers are not very high yet, so for now our resident are not staffing this facility. However, due to opening this facility and beginning to help staff the pediatric ED, we have needed to grow our faculty. Over the last year we have added 10 new faculty members to our staff, including one well known researcher from Cincinnati (more below). As of July, what began 8 years ago as a group of 16 physicians and three staff will have grown to 28 attending physicians, 12 residents, seven upper-level providers, a research nurse, and five administrative assistants. When our full complement of residents is reached a little more than a year from now, we will have over sixty souls in our department-quite a big increase!
