Endodontics , from the Greek endo (inside) and odons (tooth), is a specialist sub-field of dentistry that deals with the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth . The pulp (containing nerves , arterioles and venules as well as lymphatic tissue and fibrous tissue) can become diseased or injured, and is often unable to repair itself; if it dies, endodontic treatment is required. Endodontists are dentists who have specialized in this field; qualification as an endodontist typically requires an additional 2-3 years of training following dental school. Many endodontic residents do original research and earn a Master's degree as well as a speciality certificate. They specialize and limit their practice to root canal therapy and root canal surgery, and use their special training and experience in treating difficult cases that are referred to them by general dentists who opt not to perform these cases, such as teeth with narrow or blocked canals, or unusual anatomy. Endodontists may use advanced technology, such as operating microscopes, ultrasonics and digital imaging, to perform these special services, and often have great experience in successfully treating patients who present in pain. Patients requiring root canal therapy are either referred by their general dentists to the endodontist or are self referred; the most common procedure done in endodontics is

Root canal treatment / Endodontic therapy:
What is "having a root canal"?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is probably the most maligned of all dental procedures, but the reputation of pain typically associated with "having a root canal" is really not deserved . For the majority of people who will undergo root canal treatment the process itself will be no more involved than having a filling placed. As you read on our pages will explain for you the overall goals of root canal treatment the treatment's individual steps , and also what other dental work might be necessary for a tooth which has had its root canal treatment completed . Our pages also discuss the costs associated with root canal treatment what role endodontists play in providing this type of therapy , and why root canal treatment can fail
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal therapy refers to the process by which a dentist treats the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically that area inside a tooth that is occupied by its "pulp tissue." Most people would probably refer to a tooth's pulp tissue as its "nerve." While a tooth's pulp tissue does contain nerve fibers it is also composed of arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue. For the purposes of this discussion, so to use terminology that people seem to be most familiar with, we will use the terms "nerve" and "nerve tissue" to refer to a tooth's pulp tissue.

http://www.healthyteeth.org/cavities/rootCanal.html
Our teeth are meant to last a lifetime. Sometimes, however, damage occurs to a tooth (often from a deep cavity or an injury that causes a tooth to crack) and the inside of the tooth becomes infected. This infection damages the pulp of the tooth - the network of blood vessels and nerves inside. Left untreated, the damaged pulp can cause infection that will damage the bone around the tooth and cause swelling and pain. If the damaged tooth becomes infected, your dentist, or a dental specialist called an Endodontist, may have to perform an endodontic treatment (often called Root Canal Therapy) to save it. Endodontic treatment involves opening the tooth, removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, shaping, filling and sealing the tooth. Depending upon how much infection there is in the injured tooth, your may be put on medicine before your dentist or Endodontist can begin to work. Root Canal Slideshow:

Endodontic Treatment in Children Vital Pulp Therapy for Primary (Baby) Teeth Non-Vital Pulp Therapy for Primary (Baby) Teeth Primary Teeth: Root Canal Treatment Versus Extraction After Endodontic Treatment Endodontic treatment involves the nerves and blood vessels in the center of the tooth, called the pulp. The pulp contains the tooth's nerve, as well as blood vessels that supply the tooth with oxygen and nutrients. When the pulp is affected by traumatic injury, decay or other causes, endodontic treatment is usually the best way to try to save the tooth. Symptoms that may indicate a need for endodontic treatment include:
  • Pain from a tooth during the day or night for no apparent reason A tooth that is highly sensitive to temperature changes Sensitivity from a broken tooth with exposed pulp
Endodontic treatment can be done in permanent or baby (primary) teeth. Even though baby teeth eventually will fall out, your dentist will suggest repairing them unless they are going to fall out soon. Primary teeth are needed for chewing and speaking, as well as to hold proper spacing for the permanent teeth that will eventually replace them. If your child loses a primary tooth too soon, neighboring teeth can invade the space, blocking the permanent tooth from coming in, or cause it to grow in tilted. The type of endodontic treatment required depends on how seriously the pulp is affected. Treatment is based on your child's history of pain, examination of the teeth and X-ray results.
