Endodontics is the area of dentistry dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the dental pulp. Endodontic therapy (root canal) is a treatment modality that will save diseased or injured teeth. The alternative to endodontics is extraction. Typically, a severely decayed tooth or a tooth with a large filling will begin to ache. The pain might be intermittent at first and over time progress to a constant dull throbbing pain or a severe ache that might be felt on all the teeth on the affected side. Sometimes there is no pain and an abscess might be discovered on a routine x-ray. The pulp is the soft tissue that is located inside the tooth structure. It contains nerves, arteries, veins, and lymph tissue. It is contained in the canals located in thin tube-like spaces in the roots and in the pulp chamber located within the crown of the tooth.
This image shows how the progression of decay, if not treated, will lead to destruction of the tooth's hard tissue and pulp. If treated at the beginning of the decay process (first image), a small filling would resolve the problem. If allowed to continue as in the last image, root canal therapy would be necessary.
Decay progressing from a white spot lesion(A), into the enamel(B), into the dentin(C), towards the pulp(D), into the pulp(E), resulting in the formation of an abscess in the jaw bone.

Summary
Single versus multiple visits for endodontic treatment of permanent teeth
Root canal treatment or endodontic treatment, is a common procedure in dentistry. The main indications for root canal treatment are irreversible inflammation of the dental pulp (pulpitis) and death of the dental pulp caused by carious processes, tooth cracks or chips, or dental trauma. Successful root canal treatment is characterised by an absence of symptoms and clinical signs in teeth without radiographic evidence of periodontal involvement. The success of root canal treatment depends on a series of variables related to the preoperative condition of the tooth, as well as the endodontic procedures.
No difference exists in the effectiveness of root canal treatment, in terms of radiological success, between single- and multiple-visit root canal treatment. Most short- and long-term complications are also similar in terms of frequency, although patients undergoing a single visit may experience a slightly higher frequency of swelling and are significatively more likely to take painkillers.

http://www.avds-online.org/info/endodonticdisease.html
ENDODONTIC DISEASE The endodontic system is the pulp tissue (blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue) that are in the root canals and pulp chambers in our and our patients' teeth. This system supplies the living tooth with all components it needs to live and mature. The blood supply for the teeth arises from the mandibular and maxillary branches of the blood vessels. Nervous supply comes from the branches of the trigeminal nerve. Endodontic disease refers to any inflammation to this organ which is called pulpitis . Depending on the severity of the insult, the pulpitis may be reverseable or irreverseable. Reverseable pulpitis is usually caused by a lesser trauma, and the tooth will survive the insult. Irreversable pulpitis is due to significant pulpitis and will result in the death of the tooth. The most common cause of this is a fractured tooth where the endodontic system is exposed to the oral cavity for any length of time.
Fracture of the maxillary fourth premolar results in pulp exposure. This tooth needs endodontic care.
Broken teeth are a very common occurrence in dogs and cats. They can break due to trauma (hit by a car, ball, or rock) or due to chewing on hard objects. Any tooth can break, however some teeth are fractured more than others. The most common teeth that are broken are the canine (fang) teeth in the dog and the cat, and the upper fourth premolar (large tooth on the top in the back) in dogs.

Endodontic Anatomy and Diagnosis in the Veterinary Patient Kenneth Lyon United States INTRODUCTION Endodontics may be defined as the branch of dental science concerned with the study of form, function, health, and treatment of the dental pulp and periradicular region. Endodontic treatment includes any procedure designed to maintain the health of all, or part of, the pulp. When the pulp is diseased or injured, treatment is aimed at maintaining or restoring the health of the periradicular tissues, usually by root canal treatment, but occasionally in combination with endodontic surgery. Standard root canal therapy is more clearly described as conventional endodontics. Most modern endodontic treatment involves removal of the irreversibly damaged pulp followed by cleaning and shaping of the root canal space and subsequent filling, or obturation, with a semisolid material and a sealer. Shaping of the canal is done by hand or engine-driven instruments, the latter including sonically and ultrasonically powered files and handpieces with rotating, randomly vibrating, or reciprocating actions. Cleaning is done by irrigating the canal system with one of a number of solutions that may be antibacterial and have tissue-dissolving ability. Obturation is achieved with gutta-percha and a root canal sealer. The cleaning and shaping phase of endodontic treatment is regarded as the most important. When the canal is clean, it is important that microorganisms do not recontaminate the system. Because of the complex anatomy of the root canal system, complete disinfection is almost impossible to achieve. It is important, therefore, that any remaining microorganisms in the dentinal tubules are prevented from multiplying by the use of an antimicrobial dressing followed by three-dimensional filling. Recontamination from the oral cavity must be avoided and the importance of a good coronal seal cannot be overestimated.

Abstract: An endodontic file is provided for shaping and/or preparing a root canal. The file may include multiple cutting segments separated by non-cutting segments. The cutting segments are tapered and may have a cutting edge formed by plural helical flutes. Alternatively, the cutting segments may be formed of a substantially non-circular geometric shape with substantially straight cutting edges. The file is flexible and has increased resistance to cyclic fatigue breakage. The file further controls or limits which areas of the root canal are shaped and/or prepared during file use. The file may form part of a series of files to shape and/or prepare a root canal. Each file in the series may have cutting segments and non-cutting segments strategically placed in different regions along the working portion of the file to shape and/or prepare different portions of the root canal.
