Endometriosis most commonly exists in the most inferior aspects of the female pelvis. The most common site of disease is the ovary (approximately half of the cases). The broad ligaments (beneath the ovaries), uterosacral ligaments (supporting structures of the cervix containing sensory nerves from the uterus) and pouch of douglas (peritoneum between the rectum and the cervix) are the most frequently involved areas and typically produce mild to intense pain felt in the pelvis, low back, and during premenstrual period . Less commonly lesions can be found on the bladder, intestines, ureters, and diaphragm. Bowel endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women with endometriosis, and can cause severe pain with bowel movements. Diaphragmatic endometriosis is rare, most always on the right hemidiaphragm, and causes severe cyclic pain of the right shoulder just before and during menses. Very rarely endometriosis is found distant from pelvis,in sites such as the lung, brain, and kidney. Plural implantations are associated with recurrent right pneumothoraces at times of menses, termed

What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a common health problem in women. It gets its name from the word endometrium, the tissue that lines the uterus (womb). In women with this problem, tissue that looks and acts like the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus in other areas. These areas can be called growths, tumors, implants, lesions, or nodules. Most endometriosis is found:
  • on or under the ovaries
  • behind the uterus
  • on the tissues that hold the uterus in place
  • on the bowels or bladder
Endometriosis rarely grows in the lungs or other parts of the body. This "misplaced" tissue can cause pain, infertility (not being able to get pregnant), and very heavy periods.

Medical Editor: William C. Shiel, Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Viewer Question: Will endometriosis affect my ability to have children? Expert's Answer: The mechanism for impaired fertility may involve both anatomic distortion from pelvic adhesions, endometriomas, and the production of substances (for example, prostanoids, cytokines, and growth factors) which are "hostile" to normal ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. There has been a long-running controversy regarding how endometriosis might be related to infertility . Endometriosis is more common in infertile compared to fertile women, but the condition usually does not fully prevent conception.

PCBs, Polychlorinated biphenyls, have been in the news recently because of their discovery in recreational areas treated by contaminated fertilizer manufactured from sewage sludge. Since 1992, the Endometriosis Association, an international nonprofit organization headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has pioneered research linking PCBs (part of a chemical family called dioxins) to the development of endometriosis, a painful and debilitating disease afflicting 5.5 million women in the U.S. and Canada from ages eight to eighty years old. This chronic disease often causes ongoing pain, infertility, and immune problems. Read more...

Anne had never had problems with her periods the way some of her friends did. But over time her periods started getting so painful that she dreaded their arrival. Every month for a few days she would curl up on the couch with a heating pad and take a pain reliever. The cramps eventually became so bad that she was missing school a couple of days a month, and the pain even started happening between periods. Anne's doctor thought Anne might have endometriosis. So she referred her to a specialist in treating this condition.
What Is Endometriosis?
When a woman has document.write(defendometriosis160) endometriosis , tissue that looks and acts like the lining of the uterus starts growing outside endometrial implants Endometriosis affects more than 5 million American women, including teen girls. It's not always diagnosed right away in teens because at first they or their doctors assume that their painful periods are a normal part of menstruating. But continuing, excessive pain that limits activity isn't normal and should always be taken seriously. Because severe endometriosis can make it complicated for a girl to have children in the future, it's a good idea to get medical help for endometriosis and not wait too long. To understand why endometriosis causes problems, it helps to have a basic understanding of how the monthly menstrual cycle works: During the course of each cycle, the lining of a woman's uterus builds up with blood vessels and tissue. This happens because the uterus is getting ready to receive the egg that will be released from one of the ovaries. If the egg isn't fertilized by sperm, the uterus sheds the tissue and blood; this is the menstrual period. This entire process is controlled by the female sex hormones and usually takes about 28 to 30 days.

Endometriosis Endometriosis, a cause of female infertility, is a condition in which endometrial tissue, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside the uterus and attaches to other organs in the abdominal cavity such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometriosis is a progressive disease that tends to get worse over time and can reoccur after treatment. Symptoms include painful menstrual periods, abnormal menstrual bleeding and pain during or after sexual intercourse. The endometrial tissue outside your uterus responds to your menstrual cycle hormones the same way the tissue inside your uterus responds - it swells and thickens, then sheds to mark the beginning of the next cycle. The blood that is shed from the endometrial tissue in your abdominal cavity has no place to go, resulting in pools of blood causing an inflammation that forms scar tissue. The scar tissue can block the fallopian tubes or interfere with ovulation. Another result of endometriosis is the formation of ovarian cysts called endometrioma that may also interfere with ovulation.

What is endometriosis?
The word "endometriosis" (say: "end-oh-me-tree-oh-sis") means a problem with the lining of the uterus. The lining is called the endometrium. Normally, every month when you have your period, the lining (which is also called endometrial tissue) comes out in your menstrual flow.
Endometrial tissue is usually only inside your uterus. However, if you have endometriosis, tissue from the lining of the uterus moves through the fallopian tubes and gets on your ovaries, in your pelvis, on your bladder or in other areas. When you have your period, this tissue swells and bleeds, just like the lining of your uterus. This is often painful, and scar tissue can form in your pelvic area.

Introduction
Endometriosis is an often painful disorder of the female reproductive system. In endometriosis, a specialized type of tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus (the endometrium) becomes implanted outside your uterus, most commonly on your fallopian tubes, ovaries or the tissue lining your pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond your pelvic region. When endometrial tissue is located elsewhere in your body, it continues to act in its normal way: It thickens, breaks down and bleeds each month as your hormone levels rise and fall. Because there's nowhere for the blood from this displaced tissue to exit your body, it becomes trapped, and surrounding tissue can become irritated. Endometriosis isn't the only cause of pelvic pain. If you're experiencing pelvic pain, see your doctor to determine whether endometriosis or another condition is the cause, and to target appropriate treatment. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

Endometriosis can cause pain and infertility. It often can be treated with success. The Endometrium The lining of the uterus responds to changes that take place during a woman's monthly menstrual cycle. The cycle often is about 28 days. First, the endometrium grows and thickens to prepare for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the endometrium then thins and is shed by bleeding. These changes are triggered by hormones (estrogen and progesterone) made by the ovaries. What Is Endometriosis?

The normal tissue lining the uterine cavity is called the endometrium. Endometriosis is a condition in which the presence of this endometrial tissue moves outside the uterus. The most common places for implantation are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and intestines, uterine wall, and the lining of the pelvis. In very rare cases it may be found in the lungs, surgical wounds (cesarean section scars), brain tissue and the vaginal wall.
The explanation on how this tissue moves outside the uterine cavity is under debate. It is thought that during menstruation, blood can regurgitate out of the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity. This process is known as retrograde bleeding. How common is it?
The true incidence of Endometriosis is not really known, but it is thought that 10-15% of all women of reproductive age will develop Endometriosis and 25-35% of all infertile women have Endometriosis. The risk of this disease is seven times greater if a mother or sister have had the disease. back to top
