  • HOME ABOUT US Energy Deregulation
In many states, legislatures and public utility commissions have opened competition for electricity and natural gas supply. These measures allow you, the consumer of energy, to choose a supplier. Meanwhile, the delivery of the energy is still regulated and remains the responsibility of the local utility company. Before deregulation, your local utility company provided all parts of your energy service (generation, transmission and distribution). With competition, these parts are separated onto different companies.
    • Generation is the production of energy through power plants using either nuclear, fossil fuel (oil, coal, or natural gas) or renewable (hydro, wind, solar, biomass) generation technology. This component is not regulated by the public utility commissions. Northeast Energy Partners can help you with this component. Because of competition, we can get you lower prices, offer you renewable energy options, and provide you with customer service benefits you are not currently receiving. Transmission and distribution is the actual delivery of electricity across poles and wires and natural gas through pipelines to your business. These services are provided to you by your local utility company, which is responsible for maintaining the poles and wires, or pipelines, and responding to emergencies and power outages. The public utility commission continues to regulate transmission and distribution to ensure the safety and reliability of your services.

Energy deregulation
The energy industry is in the midst of change and the best course is not always clear. Deregulation can be confusing and carries risks previously assumed by your local electric utility - particularly for large commercial and industrial customers. The rules differ from state to state and often from utility to utility. The deregulated retail energy market can help you reduce your energy costs. However, cost savings are not guaranteed. You might actually pay more for energy under deregulation if your decisions are based on faulty information about your operations or if you sign an improperly structured supply contract. To achieve the most savings under energy deregulation, you should develop competitive energy strategies. The E Group can help you to stay on course and benefit from energy deregulation savings opportunities.

The League of Women Voters, Mississippi believes that deregulation of the electric industry should be approached cautiously because of its possible impact on the environment and various stakeholders.
    • All consumers, including the low-income should have access to an affordable, reliable source of electricity and all providers should bear a fair share of the cost of the system including cost to the environment and society.
    • Protection of the environment should be a major focus of any deregulation plan. The plan should include the following:
      - Strict standards of suppliers including public disclosure of costs, sources, and environmental impact.
      - A mechanism to ensure adequate funding for the conservation of energy and research and development of renewable energy
    • The use of clean fuels should be a goal. The pricing structure of energy should reflect the overall cost to the environment.

    ENERGY DEREGULATION
As it is in most states, New York's energy utilities were once operated as regulated monopolies, providing the transmission wires (delivery) and the electricity you use (supply). Today in New York, consumers can choose not to pay monopoly providers for supplying electricity. Ambit Energy is now an Energy Services Company (ESCO) approved by the New York Public Service Commission to sell electricity and natural gas service in the State of New York. Ambit buys power in bulk from energy power plants so we can pass the savings on to New York consumers with a competitive price on energy supply. In New York, a customer's energy bill is divided into two parts—supply and delivery. The utility company charges for delivering power to the residence. Delivery charges typically encompass 50% of the total charges. As a state-approved ESCO, Ambit Energy charges for the supply of energy—in other words, for the amount of power actually used. When a customer chooses Ambit Energy, both the utility delivery charges and the ESCO supply charges will be included on the same bill.

    http://www.arizonaenergy.org/News04/News&Events/energy_deregulation.htm
Energy deregulation: Take the middle road CALIFORNIA'S re-entry into the morass of electricity regulation is not going to be without a certain amount of fear, given the state's recent disasters and the future uncertainties of the power market. Electricity industry groups are pushing for a quick transition to partial deregulation that would allow more competition. They've got a point, because competition can reduce consumer prices and, in theory, increase supplies and decrease the chances of blackouts. Consumer advocacy groups generally favor a slower, more cautious approach. They have a point, too, because when lawmakers start tinkering with the energy market, bad things tend to happen. Last year state legislators abandoned an electricity market bill after admitting they didn't understand what they were being asked to vote on. The state's Public Utilities Commission is divided internally on the question of a timetable. A report released this week from a PUC research team advises the state to wait to make any major changes until 2009, when the majority of the state's energy contracts will expire. The PUC's president immediately argued publicly against the study's findings, saying the state needs to push forward more quickly with a partially deregulated market. The issue of energy market regulation is incredibly complex. A return to the past, when energy was a tightly controlled monopoly, may be politically tempting, but it's not advisable because that market had problems of its own. But if the market becomes too loosely regulated, or gets stuck with a mishmash of conflicting and confusing rules, it could allow the kind of market manipulation seen in the 2001 energy crisis.

Don't risk more than 2% on any given trade or idea. That doesn't matter if your strategy is technical or fundamental or discretionary. Risking 1% would be safer. Most large fund managers risk much less.
Diversify. Buying 1% risk on IBM and 1% on Dell and 1% on Hewlard Packard is a 3% risk because they all sell the same products
Don't risk more than 20% of your portfolio at any one time, 10% would be better. You have to have a way to quantify the greed factor or it might consume you and all your money at the same time.
In my own portfolios I try not to risk more than 7% on an initial portfolio position.
Initial risk and on going risk can be two different risks. As a trade becomes profitable the amount of at risk at any moment in time can be a variable not a constant. That would allow for letting profits run while cutting losses short. However, making your initial risk a variable in most cases would be a disaster. Once initial risk is conceived it should never be increased. Greed may become the primary factor in increasing initial risk and that is always a fast track to increasing losses.
I hope that risk and reward become the primary strategy concern in your future investing and trading.
