InnerCity Entrepreneurs
We are excited to announce that on May 8 InnerCity Entrepreneurs was named a winner of the first Innovation Award by the Small Business Association of New England (SBANE)!
About ICE
InnerCity Entrepreneurs (ICE) through practice and applied research promotes job creation, wealth generation, and community building for existing inner-city small businesses and organizations interested in growth. ICE fulfills its mission by partnering with inner city community-based organizations to offer advanced management training, peer-to-peer learning, one-on-one coaching, and networking opportunities to entrepreneurs who want access to new markets, capital, and knowledge to grow their businesses significantly. The graduates then continue to work together as part of the ICE Alumni Network. Since 2004, ICE has successfully launched three classes working with a total of 41 entrepreneurs in the Boston area. ICE fills a gap in the small business economic development field using an asset based, holistic approach to its programming. ICE’s methodology is based on the premise that entrepreneurs will use their own businesses as the case from which they learn. Upon completion of the program, each entrepreneur has set specific milestones, developed a strategic plan to grow his or her business, and worked with peers, experts, and coaches to gain greater access to new sources of capital, markets, and knowledge. Each entrepreneur receives a Certificate in Small Business Entrepreneurship from Boston University’s Entrepreneurial Management Institute.

(J.C. Penney Archives)
A t a busy intersection in the bustling city of Indianapolis, Indiana, stands the imposing four-story brick structure known as the Walker Building. Buff-colored terra cotta is used for decorative details, and each doorway is embellished with brightly colored African masks. Completed in 1927, this magnificent building marks the climax of the career of Madam C.J. Walker, one of America's most successful African-American businesswoman of the early 20th century. Much of the building served as the headquarters of the Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company, a business which employed some 3,000 African-American women and men to manufacture and sell hair products and cosmetics. The Walker Building, planned by Madam Walker herself but constructed after her death, was designed to serve not only as the headquarters for her business, but as a social and cultural center for African Americans in Indianapolis. Today, it houses the Madam Walker Theatre Center and various commercial businesses. A thousand miles to the west, in the small town of Kemmerer in western Wyoming, stands a small building that represents the early days of another successful career. This building housed the Golden Rule Store, a dry goods business that grew into the J. C. Penney Company, the first nationwide chain of department stores in the country. Built about 1897, the two-story stone building features a cast iron storefront decorated with rosettes and scrollwork and an elaborate metal cornice. When James Cash Penney moved his dry goods business here in 1904, the building also housed a saloon, offices, and apartments. In a 25-by-140 foot section of the first floor, Penney developed and refined the merchandising ideas that led to the growth of his successful chain of stores.

73. Entrepreneur - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
An entrepreneur is a person who has possession over a new enterprise or venture and assumes full accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrepreneur
Entrepreneur
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search For the practice of starting a new organization, see Entrepreneurship For the computer game by Peter Molyneux , see The Entrepreneur An entrepreneur is a person who has possession over a new enterprise or venture and assumes full accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. The term is a loanword from French and was first defined by the Irish economist Richard Cantillon . A female entrepreneur is sometimes known as an entrepreneuse . However, with the word "entrepreneuse" being the French feminine form of entrepreneur, its usage in English in delineating sexes detracts from the meaning of the word "entrepreneur". Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to the type of personality who is willing to take upon herself or himself a new venture or enterprise and accepts full responsibility for the outcome. The modern myths about entrepreneurs include the idea that they assume the risks involved to undertake a business venture, but that interpretation now appears to be based on a false translation of Cantillon's and Say's ideas. The research data indicate that successful entrepreneurs are actually risk averse. They are successful because their passion for an outcome leads them to organize available resources in new and more valuable ways. In doing so, they are said to efficiently and effectively use the factors of production . Those factors are now deemed to include at least the following elements: land (natural resources), labour (human input into production using available resources), capital (any type of equipment used in production i.e. machinery), intelligence and knowledge, and creativity. A person who can efficiently manage these factors in pursuit of a real opportunity to add value in the long-run, may expand (future prospects of larger firms and businesses), and become successful.
