Environmental Education Minimise your impact on the environment As well as maintaining the role of environmental guardians through monitoring, regulation and leading by example, North Shore City Council facilitates environmental education by providing information, tools and support so people can make choices that have less of a negative impact on the planet. Our aim is to motivate people and help them develop knowledge, skills, awareness, attitudes and values to protect and enhance our natural and physical environment. We want to help you minimise your impact on the environment so that generations can enjoy it in the future. The average New Zealander requires the equivalent of 30,800 square metres to support his or her lifestyle. If all New Zealanders consumed this much, 4.2 Earths would be required to sustainably accommodate the world's population. Education for sustainability T he term "education for sustainability" is now often used alongside environmental education. Education for sustainability has grown from the environmental education movement, and focuses on developing closer links between environmental quality, human equality, human rights and peace and the underlying policies. That is, as well as concern for the environment, education for sustainability looks at the issues of social justice, cultural and economic wellbeing and political participation.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABILITY UNIT
Established in 1990 with Africa 's first Chair of Environmental Education in the Rhodes Faculty of Education, the Rhodes University Environmental Education Unit (RUEEU) initially participated largely in policy development and policy initiatives. Following work on community-based projects in the mid-1990's, the Unit expanded in 1997 with the addition of the Gold Fields Environmental Education Service Centre (GFEESC). Its focus has gradually shifted in support of social transformation in classrooms, communities and adult education settings around the country. The Unit has participated in new curriculum policy formulation, new qualifications and course development in South Africa and the SADC region. It has also worked at building capacity at school and community level, in conservation organisations, in industries and other contexts to respond to the daily challenges presented by environmental issues and risks at all levels. Community consciousness is an integral part of the ethos at the unit,”

    Environmental Education for Sustainability
Environmental education has evolved to encompass the broader concept of sustainability with an emphasis on transformational change in values and behaviour. Over the last decade there has been a shift from learning in and about the environment to learning for the environment. Learning for the environment goes beyond awareness raising to developing skills for engagement with positive environmental change.
    Educating for a Sustainable Future
The national statement for environmental education was released 4 December 2005, coinciding with the first year of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The statement highlights a range of approaches to quality teaching and school administration to enhance environmental education for sustainability for the whole school community. Support for environmental education-related teacher professional learning is available under the Australian Government Quality Teacher Program, and for environmental science-related innovations in schools through the Australian School Innovation in Science Technology and Mathematics Project. The statement complements other environmental initiatives including the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) that all states and territories have made a commitment. At present there are more than 2000 schools participating in the AuSSI.

    Environment and Sustainable Development Education
We believe that education in environmental matters is important Environment or Ecology educational courses leading to formal, recognizable qualifications are offered throughout the UK. They cover a wide range of subject areas and the range is expanding as the importance of sustainability becomes more accepted. Additionally there are numerous special non-formal courses.
In total, there are hundreds, if not thousands of courses or modules on offer, and we do not provide comprehensive cover of all of them. We focus mainly on postgraduate and specialist courses, available to students in the UK, since UCAS caters for undergraduates.
There are more details on the various options lower down in this page Use the menu on the left to go to Postgraduate Education The concept of Sustainable Development has its origins round about 1990, being introduced mainly by a group of international academics. The ideology includes concern for the environment but has a much wider remit. It is much more materialistic and that is no bad thing.
