Environmental Education
We sponsor the educational newsletter Audubon Adventures in fourth grade classrooms in Ridgecrest, Trona and Kernville.
The chapter supports the Sand Canyon Environmental Education Program, in the Southern Sierra Nevada, for outdoor, hands-on, environmental education of grade school students.
At the request of teachers, members visit classrooms to give talks on birds, the environment and other topics.
We provide funding for the mounting of selected bird specimens in the Maturango Museum's bird display and docent program.
The Chapter provides information to our governmental institutions to encourage conservation and environment practices beneficial to all.
We started a Jr. Audubon program at Faller School in the fall of 2004 which is enthusiastically participated in by about 30 students.

Environmental education is essential to developing a healthy, sustainable society. Many of our current environmental problems are due to widespread ignorance of basic ecological facts of life, especially among our elected officials. In addition, special interest groups and lobbyists are deliberately spreading false information which further confuses our political leaders. To counteract this problem, we need well funded, scientifically accurate and carefully designed educational courses in our grade schools and colleges, to raise the overall awareness of the public and elected officials. Our young people need to learn basic natural resource and survival information from a young age, to ensure that future generations will understand the value and importance of pollution controls, resource conservation and wildlife habitat protection.

Home Sectors Environmental Education, Awareness, Education and Training The Environment Education, Awareness and Training is an important scheme of the Ministry for enhancing the understanding of people at all levels about the relationship between human beings and the environment and to develop capabilities/skills to improve and protect the environment. The scheme was launched in 1983-84 with the following basic objectives i) To develop education/teaching materials and aids in the formal education sector; ii) To encourage non-governmental organizations, mass media and other concerned organizations for promoting environmental awareness among the people at all levels; iii) To promote environmental education through existing educational/scientific/research institutions; iv) To ensure training and non power development in environmental education and v) To mobilize people's awareness for the preservation and conservation of environment. The Ministry also accords priority for the promotion of non-formal environmental education and creation of awareness among all sections of the society. It organizes seminars/symposia/workshops, training programmes, National Green Corps (NGC), eco-clubs, for mass awareness etc. A National Environmental Awareness Campaign (NEAC) is organized every year on a particular theme. The Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE), and International Scheme and Education Programme with stress on hands-on participatory approach still continue their good work.

BLM'S WAR AGAINST WEEDS IN NEVADA
Maintaining or restoring ecosystem health on our public lands is clearly a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) goal of the highest order. One of the greatest obstacles to maintaining healthy ecosystems and restoring impaired ecosystems is the rapid expansion of noxious weeds because these invasive plants dominate many sites and often cause permanent damage to plant communities.1
1USDI Bureau of Land Management, 1996. Partners Against Weeds, page1.
Where do Noxious Weeds come from and why do they spread? Tall Whitetop ( Lepidium latifolium ), a native of Europe and southwestern Asia, may have come into the United States as a contaminant in sugar beet seed in about 1900. It has rapidly spread across the US, first appearing along the Truckee River in 1971. By 1992, this weed occupied about 12,000 acres along the lower portion of the River. Today, tens of thousands of riverfront acres have been invaded, and it is found in most Nevada counties. It infests the Carson River, Walker River, Humboldt River basin east of Elko, and several locations in Ely, Caliente and Las Vegas. Ho w bad are noxious weeds?
