      Introduction
Epilepsy represents the most common serious neurologic problem affecting children, with an overall incidence approaching 2% for febrile seizures and 1% for idiopathic epilepsy. Diagnosis is complicated by protean clinical manifestations which are age-dependent and differ substantially from adult seizure disorders. For example, infantile spasms may be misinterpreted as a simple startle reflex and absence (petit mal) seizures are sometimes attributed to inattention or attention deficit. Effective treatment depends largely on the physician's ability to establish an accurate diagnosis and choose appropriate therapy based on the likelihood of clinical benefit as well as potential side effects.

66. Feline Seizures And Feline Epilepsy
Information about the diagnosis and treatment of feline seizures and feline epilepsy for the owners of cats who have had seizures.
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/People/lowekamp/feline_epilepsy.html
Feline Seizures and Epilepsy
The intent of this page is to provide information for people whose cats have had seizures. Seizures are a serious problem, and a cat that has had a seizure should be taken to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis. A proper diagnosis may be expensive and may take some time, but there is usually an underlying cause that can be eliminated or appropriate treatment that can be prescribed. The information in this page is not meant to substitute for a veterinarian's advice, but to aid those who are trying to learn more about their cat's illness and to encourage owners of cats that have had seizures to have their cat's illness diagnosed as quickly as possible. More clinical information is available through the references at the bottom of this article. Note that this page is maintained at infrequent intervals. There are a number of URLs at the bottom of the page that may offer more helpful advice, including internet support groups. I welcome email suggesting updates to the page, but it may be some time before they are acted on.

Reducing Risk of Seizures
Photosensitive seizures can be provoked by certain types of flashing in Web or computer content, including mouseovers that cause large areas of the screen to flash. Hazardous, seizure-inducing content has been inadvertently broadcast on television in the past, causing mass seizures in children. As Web content becomes more dynamic and media-rich, it is important to prevent similar problems. To minimize risk of visually induced seizures, Web designers and computer software developers should become familiar with the triggers of photosensitive disorder seizures. Content to consider includes bright and rapid flashes, especially red flash, and some spatial patterns. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0

Diagnosis
Other conditions may be confused with epilepsy, such as syncope, stroke , and certain psychological conditions. The first step in evaluation is an accurate diagnosis. Once epilepsy is diagnosed, identifying the cause and determining treatment are the next priorities. Several tests are used in the evaluation of epilepsy.
Electroencephalography (EEG)
The EEG is a recording of a patient's brain-wave activity. In epilepsy, the electrical activity of the brain is disturbed, and this can often be detected on the EEG. The pattern of the brain-wave activity may help in diagnosing seizure type. In patients with partial epilepsy, the EEG may also help to localize the area of seizure onset. During an EEG, a series of 32 electrodes are placed on the patient's scalp to record the electrical activity of the brain.

(This article was written primarily about epilepsy in the Belgian Tervueren; however epilepsy is a much underdiscussed topic among Border Collies.)
It happened without warning. One moment my young male Belgian Tervueren was snuggling against me as I sat on the couch; the next moment he lost control of his hindquarters and fell onto his side, unconscious. His lips writhed back over his teeth; his legs stretched out, then became rigid; and his head twisted up and back as if an unseen hand was trying to raise his chin to an impossible height. It seemed like an eternity, but actually only two minutes passed before his body relaxed and consciousness slowly ebbed back. For an hour afterward, he seemed exhausted and disoriented. I was shaken too, never having witnessed such a seizure before. Yet later that day, the dog was romping about as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.

Full Moon Not to Blame for Epileptic Seizures
By Robert Roy Britt

Senior Science Writer
posted: 09:00 am ET
26 May 2004
The Full Moon has been blamed for many things, most often in error. And now another myth has apparently been cleared. Researchers at the University of South Florida report that the gravitational tug exerted during a Full Moon does not influence the frequency of epileptic seizures. "Contrary to the myth, epileptic seizures are not more common during a Full Moon," said Selim Benbadis, associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the university's College of Medicine. "In fact, we found the number of epileptic seizures was lowest during the Full Moon and highest in the Moon's Last Quarter." The Sun, Earth and Moon line up in space to create a Full Moon. Ocean tides, created by both the Sun and Moon, are higher during a Full Moon (they're higher during the Moon's new phase, too). Even Earth's crust is constantly lifted and shifted by these tidal forces Supposed effects on humans and animals rarely if ever bear out in serious research.
