Family farms havebeen an important dimension of Maryland Agriculture since the state's colonial beginnings through the present day. These agricultural operations diversify Maryland's production, as the three family farms highlighted in this exhibit demonstrate. The Brooke family maintained a diverse operation in which women played an integral part; the Shipley family planted vegetables and fruits for sale in urban centers; and the Davis family shifted their farm production towards dairy farming. Family Farms declined during the 1980s...but across the nation and here in Ohio the numbers have started to stabilize. In Lorain County, third generation dairy farmer Dave Conrad and his brother maintain a 300 cow herd. In "Family Farms," WKSU's Kevin Niedermier interviews Conrad, who talks about the grind of milking three times a day, everyday...and the satisfaction the job gives him. He also describes the changes in the industry since his grandfather bought the property decades ago...changes such as stricter environmental laws and urban sprawl. And he wonders whether or not his kids will carry on the tradition.
Lorain County dairy farmer Dave Conrad shows WKSU's Kevin Niedermier how today's farms use a mix of traditional and modern tools to run much of the business right from the barn...

http://www.bartshomemade.com/html/family_farms.shtml
In 1996 Bart's began searching for a way to source milk for our ice cream that was guaranteed free of rBST. rBST is better known as rBGH Bovine Growth Hormone. rBGH is a controversial, artificial hormone given by injection to cows to increase their production of milk. Developed by Monsanto, it has been banned in Europe and Canada, but is still accepted by the FDA in this country. There are proven harmful effects to the cows, although only preliminary facts to show possible dangers to humans. The widespread use of rBGH would increase the milk supply which would lower the price and force yet more of our small scale family farms out of business. Since family farms are generaly better stewards of the land than the large corporate farms, and we firmly believe in the value of local control of our food production, we began a quest for local, rBGH Free Milk. The result is Our Family Farms of Western Mass. It is a cooperative of eight local dairy farms here in Western Mass. Bart's Homemade and CRV Foods were instrumental in founding the Coop and did all of the sales and administration from the launch on September 11, 1997 until May of 1999. In May, 1999 two women from two of the farms took over all sales and administration work.
Our Family Farms Milk is produced by the following eight farm families:

Family of Farms
To appreciate the layout of the McLaren farms we need to understand how the land was surveyed. It took a while to piece this together; please be patient and just keep scrolling down the page. Each "township," in this case Lanark Township, was divided into concessions, parallel strips of land 1.25 miles wide, usually running north and south, but variable with topography. Each concession strip is then partitioned by lot lines, one quarter mile apart. That makes each lot a rectangle, 1.25 miles deep and .25 miles wide. Each concession strip and each strip of lots was numbered, and those numbers would identify a particular lot. Since the area inside each rectangle is 200 acres, and each settler received 100 acres, each would get one half of a lot. Peter, for example, received the East half of Lot 2, Concession 4; John received the West half of Lot 1, Concession 4. Here's the map for By the children of Peter and John had inherited and/or acquired several farms in the immediate vicinity. Here is the map, with descriptions of the owners listed below:
  • John , oldest son of the original Peter (did you read about the Scottish naming protocols ?), inherited the East half of Lot 2, Con. 4 and has expanded the farm to include the West half of Lot 3, Con. 4.

Family Farms: Where are they going from here? October 18, 1999 By Sarah Brombaugh richbro@netins.net Stockport, Iowa Did You Know: The number of farmers under the age of 25 has decreased 50% in the last 10 years!
20% of American jobs have ties to Agriculture! This is an editorial by me, Sarah Brombaugh, of Same Dog Productions, part owner of a Family Farm Corporation, and wife of an American Farmer. I did not grow up on a farm. I was raised in a big city, where I thought farmers had it made. All the food they could eat for free! Throw some seed in the ground and make money! Wow, what an easy life. I have now lived on a Family Farm for 27 years and I know differently.... ....Many remember the years when farming was a way of life. When you grew all your own food...eggs, pork, beef, poultry, gardens full of bountiful vegetables. Tractors didn't cost as much or more as a new home. You didn't have to plant thousands of acres to make a living.

Family farms
For centuries, family farms and small coastal communities have been the pillars of our society and economy. But over the last five decades, federal policies and subsidies have shifted food production from ecologically sustainable farming families into huge agribusinesses, placing the control and profits of our food supply into the hands of multinational corporations. Our biosecurity is threatened directly by agribusiness, as factory farms and poultry production crowd bovine and poultry into inhumane and unhygienic conditions creating the conditions for the spread of mad cow disease and the avian bird flu. Further threats to Canadians' health come from the chemicals and hormones that are often pumped into these animals. Finally, much of our crops are now genetically modified and subjected to pesticides without sufficient scientific tests to know the full affect on our health and environment. The Green Party seeks to restructure our agricultural markets to sustain farming families in a domestic food economy and provide families with a fair share of the consumer food dollar. A sustainable food economy in a healthy environment requires keeping local small-scale agriculture alive and supporting a rapid transition to organic agriculture rather than subsidizing costly agro-chemicals, industrial food production, and genetically modified crops.
