Decades of fashion 1950s fashion The 1950s was the first new decade for a post war Britain, with new housing and new towns beginning to spring up around the country. Rationing ended in 1954 to the relief of the nation, after the heavily rationed late 1940s. With restrictions lifted it was sometime before the fashion industry was able to return to business as usual. Women were still wearing the utilitarian styled clothing hanging on from war torn Britain. However, in Paris the fashion house of Dior were lifting women's spirits and hopes with their ultra feminine haute couture designs, with hour glass silhouettes and designs using yards of rationed fabrics. These designs brought delight to western women and brought shouts of irresponsibility from governments 1950s The Look The look inspired by the Paris designs, soon filtered through to the high streets and the new shops catering for the feminine woman with this new silhouette to women nation wide. Everything about the new look was feminine and emphasised the figure.

Fashion History In The Making If you have 15 minutes to spare, take a look at the two videos below with the entire Hussein Chalayan spring 2007 show. If you only have 5 minutes, go straight to the second part and let it sink in. After this show, fashion will never be the same. Who is going to be able to top this? 10/10/2006 in Fashion Permalink

Levi's Jeans - Vintage or Reproduction?
Levi's® newest addition to their line is the ™ bell bottoms as seen on vintage maven Nicole Richie . Levi takes selvage, dead stock fabric and manufactures a whole line based on the original 1966 pattern. The new/old line of jeans retails for $78-$154 and comes in two colors. However, a quick search on eBay reveals that original vintage Levi's® 646™ bell bottoms have sold for as little as $17.99 up to $170, with a few pairs being new-old stock. As much as I love vintage clothing, sometimes I am in favor of reproductions because clothing from very early decades is impossible to find in good condition or in wearable sizes. But I am torn about the 1966 646™ bell bottom Levis, which truthfully are more of a flare than a bell bottom. Do you think it's better to buy them new or vintage? (Photo © levisstore.com)

Vintage Find - Chunky Hearts Bakelite Necklace
I was so thrilled when I saw models walking down the runway dripping with chunky, bold plastic accessories at shows like Yves Saint Laurent and Phillip Lim. I anticipate that chunky plastic jewelery will be as big a hit in 2008 as it was in the '20s and '30s.

What Moves the Trends of Fashion?
Throughout history, since the time when people began to form societies, the people within those societies have had an effect on one another. As humans we naturally compare the circumstances of our lives against the circumstances of those around us. The first prehistoric man to devise the means of killing and skinning an animal and keeping its fur for warmth in the winter showed courage and skill. He inspired admiration and envy in those around him. Soon enough, everyone was wearing animal skins for protection from the elements so they could be like him.
This is in essence how trends form even today. Craftspeople and designers work to create their best, inspiring admiration in some of the people around them who then want to purchase the creations, or envy in other craftspeople and designers who want to create something better to garner their own admirers. The admirers, in turn, display the creations they have acquired and the people around them are inspired to feelings of admiration, which causes them to seek to possess a similar creation, or envy causing them to search for something better to garner more admiration.
Admiration, envy and disdain are responsible for all human drive for possessions, fashion, body image, etc. But within the everlasting spin of admiration and envy, patterns are present. People who themselves possess attributes that are admired or envied can inspire admiration and envy for previously unnoted items. The attributes that are admired or disdained, as well as the circumstances of the people who possess them, change through the years.

History of Fashion
In the early sixties pleated skirts set on a hip yoke Basque were worn with short sleeved over blouses which were cut not unlike the shell tops of today. Straight skirts had front and back inverted pleats called kick pleats and were ideal for doing the twist dance craze as they allowed the knee to move freely.
Micro, Mini or Maxi 1970's Skirt Lengths
By 1970 women chose who they wanted to be and if they felt like wearing a short mini skirt one day and a maxi dress, midi skirt or hot pants the next day that's what they did. From the mid to late 70s, caftans, kaftans, kimonos, muumuus, djellaba (a Moroccan robe with a pointed hood) or jalabiya (a loose eastern robe) and other styles from every part of the Indian sub continent and Africa were translated into at home style robes and comfort wear. The new longer clothes were made of floating and romantic fabrics that used cotton voiles and chiffons or fabrics such as Broderie Anglaise or tiny pink or baby blue and white checks which had a virginal quality. They followed the line of flared and bell bottom trousers. Trousers and trouser suits were serious fashions in the 1970s.
The 1980s saw the beginning of more divergent trends in fashion. This was the result of the increasing popularity of ready-to-wear collections by major designers, which made fashionable label-conscious dressing possible for the middle class. Successful clothing designers such as Ralph Lauren, Georgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Rei Kawakubo, and Geoffrey Beene widened their design horizons, licensed their names, and put their distinctive marks on objects ranging from furniture to cars, fabric, and perfumes.

A Brief History of the June F. Mohler Fashion Library
In 1983, two prominent New York retail fashion partners, designer Shannon Rodgers and apparel manufacturer Jerry Silverman, donated a multimillion dollar gift to Kent State University for the creation of a Fashion Design and Merchandising School and for the establishment of a museum to house their extensive decorative arts and fashion design collection. Among the gifts to the Kent State University Museum were thousands of fashion journals and monographs, many of which formed a core collection for the museum's non-circulating research library. The museum research library, located in the front wing of Rockwell Hall, still exists today, though it is not a member of the Kent State University Library system. Though none of its materials circulate, many of them are cataloged and can be discovered by using the

    A Day in the Past
    Freedom of the Flapper
The roaring '20s brings to mind Prohibition, The Crash of '29 and women in flapper dresses dancing the Charleston. Eighty years have made liquor legal, the stock market somewhat stable and the flapper dress an unwavering favorite for eveningwear. The spirit of the historic flapper dress is girlish and luxurious bedecked with sequins and beads. It's the perfect after-dark opportunity to show a little leg after hiding them under the pervasive floor length skirts of the season. To achieve the girl-woman form of the 1920's, a short loose corset was worn with brassieres. Of course the form was more achievable for slender women. There were still corsets, much lighter that the past ones, to help larger women achieve this. There is also the corset and bandeau that was popular during the jazz age. The two garments would produce a roll of fat, so suspenders were added to the bra to help pull down over the top of the corset belt. The next step was the corselette (an undergarment combining girdle and brassiere).
