Love Vintage Home Store FASHION HISTORY Over the decades of the 20th Century fashions have changed dramatically. This page gives an outline of the events that helped shape the fashions of the times, beginning with the Flapper gear of the 1920's.
1920's Flapper The term "flapper" , which became common slang in the 1920's, referred to a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered "decent" behaviour. The typical flapper was unafraid to wear cosmetics or to be seen smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages in public. "The Flapper" by F. X. Leyendecker
Origins
Flappers had their origins in the Gibson girls of the1890's. Named for the drawings of Charles Dana Gibson, these women maintained their femininity despite participating in what were then considered traditionally male activities such as sports or higher education. World War 1 forced women to enter the workforce to replace the large numbers of men fighting overseas. By war's end, women were expected to return to their traditional roles as housewives and mothers. The men returned from a raucous life abroad where facing death each day had not left them eager to take on a traditional lifestyle, either. More importantly, vast numbers of men did not return from the war, leaving a significant gap between the numbers of single women and men. These factors prompted many post-war women to forget about tradition. These women were dubbed "flappers" in Britain, based on a perceived similarity to young birds vainly trying to leave the nest. While many in the United States assumed at the time that the term "flapper" derived from a fashion of wearing galoshes unbuttoned so that they flapped as the wearer walks, the term was already documented as in use in the United Kingdom as early as1912.

CRITICAL SHOPPER GOES TO S.F., SCOLDS NOTABLE SOCIALITES posted by Cintra Wilson at 12:33 AM

Today's Critical Shopper rather brutally informs Bakersfield carrot heiresses-cum-boutique owners that they should strive to be more like effortlessly fab and relevant boutique owners Ben and Chris Ospital of M.A.C.. And today's Critical Shopper may have pulled a major boner in saying that M.A.C. stands for Modern American Clothing, which is what I thought M.A.C. stood for for the last twenty years. It turns out that it actually stands for Modern Appealing Clothing. God. Well, the fact-checkers will fill me with blow-darts if the Ospitals or the socialites don't, and balance will somehow be restored.

Dress in this period covers the transition from the relatively softly constructed linear fashions of the Late Gothic (Northern Europe) and Early Italian Renaissance styles, into the far more rigidly constructed, padded and rather more blocky looking Tudor or Northern European Renaissance style. 25-Nov-2005 Hits: 134 Rating: 0.00 Votes: Detail Send URL Category: Fashion fashion history The allure of velvet Originally made of silk, the finest natural material originating from a silkworm's single filament, velvet is still a beautiful fabric in its modern incarnations. Fashion: Hip Designer Clothes
Welcome trendsetters and fashion foes to the ultimate source for hip trends in designer fashion! By focusing on three prominent designers, this page will follow the process of hip trends throughout their emergence on the runway to their progression to the clothing rack. Stay tuned to learn how people break the boundaries of hip in fashion. "Fashion anticipates and elegance is a state of mind..a mirror of the time in which we live, a translation of the future, and should never be static" -Oleg Cassini
About Me
sarah
My name is Sarah Johnson and I am currently a sophomore undergraduate at Syracuse University pursuing degrees in Psychology and Women's Studies.
View my complete profile Back To Group Fashion Page Have you ever seen an oufit that was so outrageous that you said to yourself, "Where did she get that, it is so hot"? According to designer Mary Kae Ash, "While clothes may not make the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self confidence- which I believe, does make the woman". Specifically, Kae is referring to the cycle of hip, which in our society is defined by how you look. So, in order to be hip, you must look hip. This not only has to do with the appearance of your clothes, but the labels that you have on your back. As hip is always changing, it is a constant battle to wear the hottest, newest fashions first.
Fashion is not only for the trendsetters and people who love fashion, but every person that dresses themselves chooses their clothing for a reason. Choice of clothing says a lot about a person and the influences of our society and time period. As periods change, fashion and hip are constantly changing. New clothing lines and styles are produced, while old ones are pushed to the sale rack. The media and designers are also continuously vying for attention to bombard the mainstream with their styles and fashions. Thus, the cycle of what is hip is defined by our society and the role the media plays in it at that time period.
