MeSH Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder classified by the presence of chronic widespread pain and tactile allodynia While the criteria for such an entity have not yet been thoroughly developed, the recognition that fibromyalgia involves more than just pain has led to the frequent use of the term "fibromyalgia syndrome ". It is not contagious , and recent studies suggest that people with fibromyalgia may be genetically predisposed. The disorder is not directly life-threatening. The degree of symptoms may vary greatly from day to day with periods of flares (severe worsening of symptoms) or remission; however, the disorder is generally perceived as non-progressive

Introduction
You hurt all over, and you frequently feel exhausted. Even after numerous tests, your doctor can't find anything specifically wrong with you. If this sounds familiar, you may have fibromyalgia. Although the intensity of your symptoms may vary, they'll probably never disappear completely. It may be reassuring to know, however, that fibromyalgia isn't progressive or life-threatening. Treatments and self-care steps can improve fibromyalgia symptoms and your general health. NEXT: Signs and symptoms

Symptoms
Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they were pulled or overworked. Sometimes fibromyalgia symptoms include muscle twitches and burning sensations. More women than men are afflicted with fibromyalgia, and it shows up in people of all ages. A conservative estimate of its prevalence is 2% of the general population, but it may be as high as 3-5%. To help your family and friends relate to your fibromyalgia symptoms, have them think back to the last time they had a bad flu. Every muscle in their body shouted out in pain. In addition, they felt devoid of energy as though someone had unplugged their power supply. While the severity of symptoms fluctuates from person to person, fibromyalgia may resemble a post-viral state. This similarity is the reason experts believe that fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may actually be the same condition. Gulf War syndrome also overlaps with FMS/CFS.

Highlights
Causes
  • People with fibromyalgia have decreased activity in opioid receptors in parts of the brain that affect mood and the emotional aspect of pain, researchers have found. This might explain why fibromyalgia patients are likely to experience depression, and are not very responsive to opioid painkillers. Researchers have identified a conflict between sensory perception and nervous system processing in people with fibromyalgia. One study suggests that people with the condition might have greater awareness of, or less tolerance for, movement problems (such as tremor) that don't match with their expected sensory feedback. This mismatch in sensory signals might enhance the perception of pain.
Treatment
  • New research adds to the evidence that exercise relieves some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Women with fibromyalgia who took part in a program that combined aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises had better physical and emotional function, as well as reduced symptoms. Another study found that an at-home exercise program improved upper body pain and function, especially in women who were having functional difficulties at the beginning of the study.

FIBROMYALGIA: INVISIBLE PAIN
If we think of fibromyalgia, or as we should rethink fibromyalgia, we have to look at fibromyalgia as a newer problem, not necessarily as a disease , but we will call it a syndrome . A syndrome is a group of problems, not an individual disease. These groups of problems have unique characteristics, and any one of them might be finding an effective treatment pathway, that helps us unravel the troubling problems caused by fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome. It is, by its nature as a syndrome, not really a disease as people would know. When we talk about pain, pain is not a traditional disease. We heal, but do not always cure. Think of it like diabetes and hypertension. Fibromyalgia can be managed, but it needs to be managed differently than a standard disease. Remember, it is a syndrome. The pain is biological, psychological, and social. It affects all parameters, including even a spiritual or religious component. We call it biopsychosocial. We cannot separate these three because the brain will not separate those three. Fibromyalgia is a disease machine. It takes its own direction, and many people have their own personal experience.

Fast Facts
  • Fibromyalgia affects 2 to 4 percent of the population, predominantly women. There is no laboratory or other diagnostic test for fibromyalgia so it must be diagnosed based on patient symptoms and physical examination. Medication, while important, is not the only treatment. Patient education, exercise, self-management skills and alternative therapies help treat fibromyalgia symptoms.
What fibromyalgia is
Pain and tenderness in the so-called "tender points" are the defining characteristics of fibromyalgia, so medical care providers focus on the features of the pain to distinguish it from other rheumatic disorders.
What causes fibromyalgia
Genetics also appear to play a role leading to a familial tendency to develop fibromyalgia. So does everyday life exposure to physical, emotional or environmental stressors that may trigger the initiation of fibromyalgia symptoms.

Medical Editor: Leslie J. Schoenfield, MD, PhD It is not unusual for a patient with fibromyalgia to ask the doctor: "What can I do to help relieve my symptoms? After all, I am not very interested in medications." Some patients with fibromyalgia make this or similar statements to their doctors because they are often younger and many do not have underlying (additional ongoing) medical conditions (although some do). Therefore, they are not accustomed to taking medications regularly. Are there really ways that patients can help themselves? Yes. Here are the big three...

Questions and Answers About Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue ( fibro ) and the Greek ones for muscle ( myo ) and pain ( algia Although fibromyalgia is often considered an arthritis-related condition, it is not truly a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) because it does not cause inflammation or damage to the joints, muscles, or other tissues. Like arthritis, however, fibromyalgia can cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can interfere with a person's ability to carry on daily activities. Also like arthritis, fibromyalgia is considered a rheumatic condition. You may wonder what exactly rheumatic means. Even physicians do not always agree on whether a disease is considered rheumatic. If you look up the word in the dictionary, you'll find it comes from the Greek word
