AFSA is an all volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research that investigates the causes and treatments for fibromyalgia syndrome. A 501(c)3 Nonprofit Charitable Organization.
The American Fibromyalgia Syndrome Association (AFSA) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research that accelerates the pace of medical discoveries to improve the quality of life for patients with fibromyalgia. Through donations, AFSA supports studies that seek out the causes and treatments for fibromyalgia, which is an extremely painful, fatiguing, and often debilitating medical condition that affects 3-5% of the population. By stepping up research on fibromyalgia, AFSA and its generous contributors are working together to make a substantial difference in the lives of millions. Scientists are currently focusing on abnormalities in the central nervous system that are believed to cause widespread muscular pain, sleep and digestive disorders, chronic headaches, memory and concentration difficulties, and many other body-wide symptoms. Ninety percent of donations to AFSA go directly to fund research.

You are NOT crazy. If you have fibromyalgia you are ill. You may have been told that whatever you have seems untreatable. You may have been overmedicated by well-intentioned health care providers who wanted desperately to help you. You may have fallen victim to some of the many folks who are making billions of dollars a year off your desperate search for something, anything, that helps.
We are here to help. We provide educational materials based on a lifetime of work by R. Paul St. Amand, MD, treating fibromyalgia. We raise money to fund legitimate fibromyalgia research. Our mission is to increase knowledge, reduce frustration and most important, to help. Your quality of life is extremely important to us.
We are gratified that the number of people and organizations devoted to helping fibromyalgics has grown enormously. Treatment of fibromyalgia has become a multi-billion dollar industry and we have no objection to profit. However, conflicting information provided by marketers regarding the guaifenesin protocol can be harmful. If, after thorough investigation you and your doctor determine that implementing the guaifenesin protocol is appropriate for you, it is critically important that it be adhered to precisely.

They both had seen numerous doctors before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by fatigue and widespread pain in muscles and joints. They both had trouble finding medical information and support for coping with the illness. Seven months after meeting, they started gathering with five other people with fibromyalgia who also wanted to bring awareness to the issue. "We called ourselves 'the pillow posse' because we would meet and have our pillows to support our aching bodies," Matallana says. Those gatherings grew into the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), an organization that now provides support, research information, medical education, and messages of hope to millions.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 18, 2008) See also: Fibromyalgia syndrome has no cure, is difficult to diagnose, and effective pain management strategies are a must to help patients cope with the disease. An estimated 12 million Americans have fibromyalgia, which is characterized by widespread muscle and joint pain and myriad other symptoms. The condition is far more prevalent in women and the incidence increases with age, reaching 7 percent among women 65 years and older. Forty subjects were selected for the nabilone trial, conducted by researchers at the University of Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital. They were divided into nabilone and placebo groups and were treated for four weeks. The authors noted this was the first randomized, controlled-access trial to evaluate nabilone for pain reduction and quality-of-life improvement in fibromyalgia patients. Nabilone is one of two oral marijuana-based compounds, known as cannabinoids, available in Canada and is approved for treatment of nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. Results of the Manitoba study showed the nabilone group had significant reductions in pain and anxiety, measured by comparisons with baseline scores on the visual analogue scale for pain, the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and the FIQ anxiety score. From the data, the study concluded nabilone has significant benefits for pain relief and functional improvement in fibromyalgia patients. Although the improvement was significant, none of the nabilone-treated subjects had complete relief of their fibromyalgia symptoms.

Fibromyalgia (fi-bro-mi-l-ja) is a disorder that causes aches and pain all over the body. People with FM also are tender throughout the body, which is most pronounced at certain regions termed "tender points." Tender points are specific places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs. These points hurt when pressure is put on them.

What You Need to Know About Fibromyalgia What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by aching and pain in muscles, tendons and joints all over the body, especially along the spine. There are measurable changes in body chemistry and function in some people with fibromyalgia. These changes may be responsible for certain symptoms. However, fibromyalgia is not associated with muscle, nerve or joint injury; inadequate muscle repair; or any serious bodily damage or disease. Also, people who have fibromyalgia are not at greater risk for any other musculoskeletal disease. What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?
The pain in people with fibromyalgia usually seems worse when they are trying to relax and is less noticeable during busy activities or exercise. Other symptoms are often associated with the pain, including:
    What causes fibromyalgia?
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. There are, however, many theories about why people get fibromyalgia. One theory suggests that stress contributes to the onset of fibromyalgia (see Figure 1). Physical and emotional factors may also contribute to the onset of fibromyalgia. For example, a physical illness (such as an infection) could cause changes in your body chemistry that lead to pain and sleeplessness.

    Symptoms
Symptoms In fibromyalgia, generalized, widespread muscular pain and tender points (see figure 1) may be present. Pain is generally felt all over, although it may start in one region, such as the neck and shoulders, and seems to spread over a period of time. Fibromyalgia pain has been described in a variety of ways including: burning, radiating, gnawing, sore, stiff, and aching. It often varies according to time of the day, activity level, weather, sleep patterns, and stress levels . Most people with fibromyalgia say that some degree of pain is always present. They sense that the pain is mainly in their muscles and often note that fibromyalgia feels like a persistent flu. About 90 percent of people with fibromyalgia describe moderate or severe fatigue with lack of energy, decreased exercise endurance, or the kind of exhaustion felt with the flu or with lack of sleep. Often the fatigue is more of a problem and more troubling than the pain. Generally, people with fibromyalgia wake up feeling tired, even after sleeping throughout the night. They may be aware that their sleep has become lighter and that they wake up during the night. Scientific studies have demonstrated that most people with fibromyalgia have an abnormal sleep pattern, especially an interruption in their deep sleep.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized primarily by widespread pain throughout the body. The name fibromyalgia, introduced by Muhammad Yunus MD and his colleagues in 1981, literally means pain in the muscles and tissue. "Fibro" refers to the fascia or connective tissue, "my" to muscle, and "algia" to pain. Other ailments associated with fibromyalgia include fatigue, poor quality sleep, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light, noise and cold, and irritable bowel. As many as 2% of the general population may suffer from this condition. No ethnic group seems any more likely to have fibromyalgia; however women develop it approximately 8 times more often than do men. While the medical community does not yet understand the pathology underlying fibromyalgia, more and more information about this condition is becoming known. Medical researchers are now actively searching for the cause, mechanisms and best treatments for fibromyalgia and related conditions. To keep abreast of scientific studies on fibromyalgia, you can search and read the abstracts of articles on MEDLINEplus , the National Library of Medicine's database of medical journal articles.

    The Facts about Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common, chronic disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. Tender points are specific places on the body - on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and upper and lower extremities - where people with fibromyalgia feel pain in response to slight pressure. In addition to pain and fatigue, people who have fibromyalgia may experience:
    • sleep disturbances
    • morning stiffness
    • headaches
    • irritable bowel syndrome
    • painful menstrual periods
    • numbness or tingling of the extremities
    • restless legs syndrome
    • temperature sensitivity
    • cognitive and memory problems
    • a variety of other symptoms
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome rather than a disease. A syndrome is a collection of signs, symptoms, and medical problems that tend to occur together but are not related to a specific, identifiable cause.

Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment includes exercise, local heat, and drugs for pain and sleep. Any fibromuscular tissues may be involved, especially those of the occiput, neck, shoulders, thorax, low back, and thighs. Localized soft-tissue pain and tenderness (ie, myofascial pain syndrome [see also Temporomandibular Disorders: Myofascial Pain Syndrome ], is often related to overuse or microtrauma). In fibromyalgia, symptoms and signs are more generalized, and there is no specific histologic abnormality. It sometimes occurs in patients with systemic rheumatic disorders, which complicates the diagnosis. Fibromyalgia is common, occurring most often in women; it can occur even in children or adolescents. The cause is unknown, but disruption of stage 4 sleep may contribute, as can emotional stress. Fibromyalgia may be precipitated by a viral or other systemic infection (eg, Lyme disease).
