Fijian Warrior What can we say about the greatest place in the entire world! Fiji is such a magical home, entirely made up of wonderful souls filled with life and love where everyday you can share in the joy and happiness of a wide variety of cultural or religious celebrations; where guns are not allowed and where democracy and tolerance reside. Fiji is believed to have been first settled about three and a half thousand years ago. The original inhabitants now called "Lapita people", are named after a distinctive type of fine pottery they produced, remnants of which have been found in almost all Pacific islands. Linguistic evidence suggests they may have come from northern or central Vanuatu, or possibly the eastern Solomons. Fiji, it seems experienced at least two periods of culture change in prehistoric times.

Fiji Culture
The natives work together in upholding customs and celebrations, such as helping each other in feast preparation or gift making for various occasions; they also fish together, and later divides the catch, as well as communal activities like home building, pathway maintenance, and the village greenery.
The great benefit of the Fiji culture is an extended family group that makes sure no one goes hungry, unloved, or uncared for. In an ideal world, it is an all-embracing refuge net, which effectively works not just as a caretaking method, but also gives every person their sense of identity and belongingness.
The Yaqona Ceremony
The Yagona Ceremony is a privilege to visitors, being invited to this ceremony would mean you have been likely a friend to them. There are certain etiquettes and rules however, if you are to attend this ceremony. A kava root is brought as a sevusevu or gift, which guests traditionally offer. The host gladly accepts the gift and a welcoming ritual is done, which means the guest has been officially accepted. During the ceremony a bilo or coconut, which is full of yaqona, will be offered to the guest and the guest should accept, drinking it one big gulp. The yaqona is a Fijian sacramental ritual that strengthens friendship with strangers.
The Fiji culture is a unique and strong culture that says a lot in this contemporary world; despite the expanding modernization, they have preserved what remains to be most important to them, their customs, beliefs, and strong cultural bond that makes them among the most remarkable cultures existing these days. Remember, if you visit Fiji and these villages, respect for their culture is always the main key in building friendship with locals.

    ABOUT FIJI - CULTURE

In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life. These cultural traditions have eless survived to the present day, albeit in a more modified form.
Some of the more violent customs such as cannibalism were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. Human sacrifice was a part of the Fijian ritual in days gone by. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief's house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up"
The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.
Hierarchy The Fijian chiefly system follows the Polynesian system where the position is hereditary.
