The Marines Who Never Returned
Friday, May 2, 2008, 7:00 pm, Meyer Auditorium
Frequently cited as one of the true classics of Korean cinema, Lee Man-hee's ambitious production looks at a band of soldiers fighting in the Korean War. Lee had the full assistance of the Korean army while he was filming the harrowing battle scenes, but his ability to convey intimate moments of camaraderie and friendship is what elevates this film above the average war movie. 1962 / 110 min. Korean with English subtitles.
Part of the Korean Film Festival DC 2008 . This festival is made possible by the Korean Film Council and the Korea Foundation.
Free tickets required.

Times and Sunday Times critics pick their favourite films of the year The best films of 2008 (so far)
"Greeted with universal approval from the critics, an exceptional, masterful piece of film-making that combines social realism, political comment and nail-biting tension" - Wendy Ide Babel
"A stunning piece of cinema that hinges on one reckless moment of childish stupidity. The most exhilarating Oscar contender by a long stretch" - James Christopher Blade Runner: The Final Cut
"It has taken 25 years, three cinema edits and possibly a round trip to Mars for Ridley Scott to arrive with the definitive version of his sci-fi masterpiece" - James Christopher The Seventh Seal
"A high-speed ride into the white heat of the battle of Thermopylae in 480BC. The result is something fantastic, voluptuous, bloody, ferocious and sublime" - Cosmo Landesman

Indie Films vs. Indy's Film at Cannes
The 2008 Cannes film festival opens. As the blitz of films, celebrity parties and general film industry schmoozing started yesterday, the question was if the independent films usually beloved by Cannes critics could compete for attention against "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which premieres this weekend. Cannes' duality is obvious to anyone strolling along the Croisette, the film festival's main strip. On one side is Cannes' official poster: indie filmmaker David Lynch's artistic picture of a mysterious blond bombshell. On the other side, a hotel facade made-up for "Indiana Jones" celebrations to look like a plastic temple of doom. While film critics may complain that Cannes has capitulated to Hollywood, the film festival takes pride in having many different styles of films. The festival opened with "Blindness," Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles' film of an epidemic that causes people to lose thier eyesight. The movie stars Julianne Moore with Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal and Danny Glover, and adapted from a novel by Portuguese Nobel laureate Jose Saramago. While critics mused about the symbolism of "Blindness", paparazzi were capturing Jack Black pulling a publicity stunt for his new film "Kung Fu Panda," DreamWorks' story of a pudgy panda into martial arts.

New Directors/ New Films
March 26 through April 6, 2008
Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art
Dedicated to the discovery and support of emerging artists, New Directors/New Films has earned an international reputation as the premiere festival for works that break or re-cast the cinematic mold. Twenty-six features and six shorts, handpicked by curators of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art, made the cut this year, as the 37th edition of this non-competitive program spotlights the very best in the current class of new directors, actors, producers, writers, cinematographers, editors and more. We expect many of the filmmakers will be attending the festival to discuss their work first hand.
Curated by the Film Society and MoMA team of Jytte Jensen, Laurence Kardish, Marian Masone, Joanna Ney, Richard Peña, and Rajendra Roy, the films in the 2008 festival represent 17 countries: Argentina, China, France, Greece, Haiti, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, the Philippines, Rwanda, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Festival screenings are held at the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater and MoMA’s Titus 1 Theater. The festival’s HBO Films Roundtable offers a forum for interaction with filmmakers and in-depth discussion on the year’s vital theme. Titled New Directors and Beyond, the 2008 Roundtable focuses on a group of New Directors/New Films alumni who have sought independence from traditional means of film distribution. The experiences of these diverse film and video-makers illuminate the newest technologies and media being explored for maximum artistic exposure.

However, we realize that the real thing isn't very easy to get to. Most of us don't live anywhere near theatres that show this kind of fare and very few of us can afford the hefty rental fees, not to mention the cumbersome equipment, to show these films. Thankfully, there is the internet which allows you to get a whiff of these films regardless of your geographical location.
We realize that the films we are presenting are of poor quality. It's not a bad thing; in fact, the best thing that can happen is that seeing a crummy shockwave file will make you want to make a trip to New York to the Anthology Film Archives or the Lux Cinema in London (or other places around the world showing similar fare). Next best case scenario will be that you will be enticed to purchase a high quality DVD from the noble folks trying to get these works out into the world. Believe me, they're not doing it for the money.
Please support these filmmakers and their distributors by purchasing their films. Please support the presenters of these works by going to see them in theatres whenever you can. We've complied a list of places where you can see them and buy them:
