On May 30, Arthur Dong's Golden Horse award-winning documentary "Hollywood Chinese" opens in Los Angeles and returns for another theatrical engagement in New York City. Tell us about the most interesting audience reaction you've had so far. Arthur Dong: One white viewer sheepishly admitted that the Charlie Chan films were his guilty pleasure and they actually helped him survive a childhood attack of chicken pox: Miserable in bed, his mom showed him every Chan film available on video because they were the only thing that made him forget his discomfort. That was so, how should I describe it... endearing... both his story and confession. I assured him, and subsequently many other white audience members as well, that while some troublesome misrepresentations resulted from the Chan films, millions of fans still cherish fond memories like his. But by viewing "Hollywood Chinese," I hope they can appreciate and see how media creates and perpetuates stereotypes. My goal with "Hollywood Chinese" was to both celebrate and critique the history of the Chinese in American feature films; I wanted to explore films from a number of perspectives and certainly the popularity of the Chan films is an important part of the story.
