If approved by the European Parliament , the measure would mean that precisely identifying information on tens of millions of citizens will be added in coming years to databases that could be shared by friendly governments around the world. The United States already requires that foreigners be fingerprinted and photographed before they enter the country. So does Japan . Now top European security officials want to follow suit, with travelers being fingerprinted and some also having their facial images stored in a Europe-wide database, according to a copy of the proposal obtained by

Fingerprinting
What's it all about?
In the days before people discovered the value of fingerprinting to identify criminals, mistakes were made when innocent people looked similar to the real felons. It is easy to take your own fingerprints, though it’s a bit messy with the ink! With enough care, you can find out what sort of fingerprints you have. You can also identify your friends from their fingerprint! Find out more about fingerprinting at Fingerprints Totally Explained

First take a latent (hidden) fingerprint. Press your right thumb on a sheet of glass or plastic film. Gently shake some talcum powder over your sweaty thumbprint, and blow off the excess. Make sure you don’t blow the talcum powder into your eyes. Smooth a piece of sticky tape over your thumbprint, then peel it off carefully. Stick the tape onto a labelled piece of black card. Hand it in to the Police Officer!

Fingerprinting Identification Federal Bureau of Investigation Educational Web Publication For over 100 years, police agencies have had a powerful tool in combating crime. The use of fingerprinting allows crime fighters an extremely accurate means of identification. Other means of identification (such as hair color or style, weight, or eye color) may change, but fingerprints do not. In earlier civilizations, branding, tattooing, or even maiming was used to mark and identify criminals. Although man had been aware of the fact that each person possessed a unique set of ridges on the fingers and hands, the use of these prints for criminal identification was not accepted until the early 1900s. The FBI Identification Division was born in 1924, with the receipt of 810,188 fingerprint files, mostly from the Leavenworth Penitentiary. This collection became increasingly important due to the emergence of criminals who regularly crossed state lines. Currently, the FBI possesses over 250 million sets of fingerprint records. This enormous collection is composed of both criminal and civil prints. The civil file includes the prints of both government employees and applicants for federal jobs.

Discovering DNA fingerprinting
04/02/04 by Giles Newton Forensics, paternity and immigration: all have been revolutionised by DNA fingerprinting. Sir Alec Jeffreys describes its development. DNA fingerprinting has become an indelible part of society, helping to prove innocence or guilt in criminal cases, resolving immigration arguments and clarifying paternity. Its inventor, Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, University of Leicester, looks back at how it began. With highly automated and sophisticated equipment, the modern-day DNA fingerprinter can process hundreds of samples a day. Back in the late 1970s, however, molecular biology was in its infancy and was just beginning to be applied to human genetics. "I'd been working in Amsterdam with Dick Flavell," says Professor Jeffreys. "We'd got to the point where we could detect single copies of human genes – which led to one of the first observations of introns [non-coding sections of DNA that split up genes]. But when I came to Leicester in 1977, I wanted to move away from the study of split genes, and to marry the new techniques of molecular biology with human genetics."

A new technique identifies the origins of perchlorate even after microbes break it down.
Perchlorate, found nearly everywhere , has become a fiery topic over the past few years. The chemical, which occurs both naturally and as a residue from explosives and rocket fuel, interferes with thyroid function and is particularly dangerous to children. In research published today on ), a team led by Neil Sturchio of the University of Illinois Chicago reports on advances in perchlorate fingerprinting Tom Mohr Communities with perchlorate contamination want to know where it came from and who is responsible for cleaning it up, and isotopes can help answer those questions. But perchlorate can also linger from decades-old sources, such as cold war rocket-fuel production , or the historical use of nitrate fertilizers biodegradation of chlorine isotopes in perchlorate The approach might help the town of Morgan Hill, Calif

How would you feel if the government suddenly passed a law that every adult had to be fingerprinted at their local police

nor their parents, were ever asked for their consent. Some people feel this is part of an enormous softening-up exercise targeting society's most impressionable, so they'll accept cradle-to-grave state snooping. "You'll be monitored for life. International Fingerprinting Services provides fast, convenient professional electronic fingerprinting services to individuals, private organizations and government agencies across Canada. Fingerprinting of people for non-criminal purposes, such as employment applications, background checks, police clearance certificates and Immigration and Citizenship applications has never been as convenient and secure as it is today. more information Background on fingerprinting for the purposes of obtaining "Police Clearance Certificate"
The fingerprinting of persons for non-criminal purposes has always been the responsibility of police departments. Due to the budget cutting and increased demand on our police departments to provide services more related to crime and crime prevention, the area of fingerprinting for non-criminal purposes has been, for the most part, turned over to a private agency which will maintain the integrity of the fingerprint process. IFS Canada, which has initiated the most secure fingerprinting process in the world has been endorsed by police forces and government departments as well as the FBI who have also recognized IFS Canada and process fingerprints taken by this agency on a regular basis.

    1. Abstract
HTTP Fingerprinting is a relatively new topic of discussion in the context of application security. One of the biggest challenges of maintaining a high level of network security is to have a complete and accurate inventory of networked assets. Web servers and web applications have now become a part of the scope of a network security assessment exercise. In this paper, we present techniques to identify various types of HTTP servers. We shall discuss some of the problems faced in inventorying HTTP servers and how we can overcome them. We shall also introduce and describe a tool, httprint , which is built using the concepts discussed in this paper.
    2. Theory of Fingerprinting
    A fingerprint is defined as:
  • The impression of a fingertip on any surface; also: an ink impression of the lines upon the fingertip taken for the purpose of identification. something that identifies: as (a) a trait, trace, or characteristic revealing origin or responsibility (b) analytical evidence that characterizes an object or substance.
