Abstract
Teaching older adults to use computers requires taking into account the effects of the aging process. Techniques which work for a younger generation will not necessarily be successful with older novices, but modifications which improve the outcome for older students also work well with younger learners. This article explains how computer trainers at the Palm Beach County Library System's North County Regional Library created a mousing class and modified existing classes to create a series of four classes designed specifically for older adults who have never used a computer before. The article also summarizes the difficulties older adults face in learning to use computers, and ways to improve the learning outcome. News from the Field Chipola Junior College People: Papers, Publications, Presentations Dr. Carolyn E. Poole , Director of Library Services at Chipola Junior College and FACRL Executive Board member, published an article entitled "Libraries LINCC Lifelong Learners to Community Colleges" in the Spring 2002 issue of Florida Libraries , the official journal of the Florida Library Association. The purpose of the article was to illustrate how LINCC resources offered by community college libraries are serving lifelong learning needs both on campus and off campus. Citing many examples, Poole described ways in which students, faculty, staff, administrators, community members, state citizens, regional residents, and even global users are benefited by the LINCC system. Cooperative sharing of print/electronic information, customized instruction for information literacy, and virtual reference services are a few of the contributions derived from LINCC libraries. Dr. Poole expects the new state priority of developing one common Florida library information portal to enhance lifelong learning. Sun Feb 19 09:35:24 EST 2006 I think Florida has an amazing group of people committed to spanning the boundaries between libraries and museums. Someone wrote to me from another state who had found the special FLA publication COMMON THREADS http://www.flalib.org/publications/florida_libraries/2005se.pdf He asked me how Florida had done this and I told him about the efforts of Carmine and Linda and Derrie and TBLC. And about FLAM with 139 members. He asked why someone didn't write the story of Florida's library and museum connection?! Something to think about. ABSTRACT: PROJECT SUMMARY: For the pilot project, each team member identified a faculty member to collaborate with in creating a unique course guide tailored to a specific course Freshman Composition Level One (ENC 1101), Freshman Composition Level Two (ENC 1102 Web enhanced using WebCT), and College Reading (REA 0010). The librarians chose these classes because they represent the majority of MDC library users. Each course was offered at a different campus.
Librarians began by contacting faculty members, reviewing course curricula, and addressing the informational concerns of the instructors. One of the main concerns was creating a tutorial dealing with basic searching techniques and other fundamental information literacy skills. The team made a list of modular components that became the content of a full-blown Using the Library tutorial.

IV. Working Hours and Time Allocation
As mentioned in the introduction, I worked 80 hours thus far. The breakdown of the total working hours into project bases is as follows:
  • Barcoding project: 14 hours Maintenance of reprint collection with ProCite : 19 hours Creating "Journal and Serial Holdings" page: 14.5 hours Other Website maintenance (incl. banner design): 13.5 hours Scanning: 4 hours Subject guide: 14 hours
As far as meeting my second objective, "Learning strategies for operating a small library as a solo librarian," I have not counted the hours. Activities to meet the objectives are incorporated into the projects above, since they are acquired mostly through informal conversation. GO TO TOP
