The History Of English Football. The game of 'Association Football' undoubtedly originates in England. However the earliest records of man kicking something resembling a ball date back to the Chinese Han Dynasty, 2000 years ago. There are records of the ancient Greeks and Romans developing the pastime known as ‘Harpastum’, a curious mixture of association and rugby football. The Romans introduced this to Britain in the time of Julius Caesar. It was during the Middle Ages that the game took hold of the public with annual Shrovetide matches being played between neighbouring villages with teams of unlimited numbers. The ball was usually a pig’s bladder although on one infamous occasion in Chester the head of a dead Viking was used to celebrate a recent victory over the invaders. In the late 13 th century and early 14 th century street matches were so popular in London that traders called on King Edward ll to outlaw the game in the city. Thus on 13 th April 1314 the first ever football ban came into force. The ban proved quite ineffective despite the threat of prison. Kings Edward lll, Richard ll, Henry lV and James lll made subsequent attempts at bans, all with similar effectiveness. The only ban with any level of effectiveness was that imposed by Oliver Cromwell, the game briefly disappeared but reappeared with even greater popularity following the Restoration in 1660. The popularity of the game continued to soar in Elizabethan times ( picture left ) , the

Generally overlooked or forgotten is the important role the school played in the development of athletics as a part of college life.
    Articles in the Golden Transcript
By 1890, fairly regular competition with other colleges and universities in Colorado was being scheduled, augmented by games with some high schools and club teams, such as the Denver Athletic Club and Littleton Wheel Club.
With the increasing popularity of football in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, the student leaders of the athletic association felt it advisable to hire a professional coach. Money raised through student fees would pay his salary. In 1904, Gordon "Shorty" Ellsworth, a graduate from the University of Chicago, was employed in that capacity. Commencing with that year, he produced four consecutive Colorado State championship teams.
The Orediggers, as the Mines football team came to be nicknamed, later practiced on Stratton field near the center of the Mines campus.
In 1922, a small stadium was erected and the Orediggers began to play some of their home games in Golden. In 1927-28, wings were added to the seating facility. These stands provide the principal seating for spectators at Mines games today. The athletic complex was named Brooks Field in honor of Ralph Brooks, a former member of the Board of Trustees.

Greatest number of points scored in a game: 68, vs Citrus High School, Sept. 9, 2005
The team had one win, according to the recollection of James Grey. Grey recalled that he quarterbacked Gulf's first football team. He recalled that a Tarpon Springs baker, Bill Machachas, volunteered to coach the team. Deane DeFord apparently took over as coach later in the year. Admission for home games was 25 cents. Grey recalled that helmets weren't required, the players had second-hand uniforms, and used equipment purchased from Clearwater High. The obituary of George William Corwin Littell ('31) says he was on Gulf's first football team. The obituary of Melvin Clay Knowles Sr. ('31) says that he "captained the school's first football team." On Oct. 3, 1930, the
