Under the direction of Major Norm Burley, football commenced at Vancouver College in 1929. In those days it was know as Canadian Rules Rugby and the Fighting Irish of the day played games against local high schools such as Magee, Prince of Wales and even the UBC Freshmen.
In the early 1930's the team was not permitted to play in the city league and maintained a schedule against local club teams. In 1939, Brother Riley, the Athletic Director, introduced the boys to American rules football and they played their first game south of the border against O'Dea High School in Seattle. While the Irish came out on the short end of a 21-0 score, the game set the tone for what was to come.
In 1941, former All American Greg (Hardrock) Kabat came on the scene and commenced one of the many "Golden Era's" of Irish football. He was a tough taskmaster but attracted many outstanding athletes and was very successful in playing against American schools. Among his may stars in the 1940's was Ed Ryan, who after graduating from St. Mary's University in California went on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL.
In 1955 Fred Owens took over as Head Coach and another "Golden Era" was born. The Irish dominated the teams they faced on both sides of the border. Under Owens from 1955-59 the team went 27-12-1 and produced future CFL players such as Roy Cameron, Pete Ohler, Paul Seale, Barney Therrien, Greg Findlay, and New York Yankee player, Bob Lasko. During the Owens era, the first Archbishops' Trophy game against Notre Dame was played in 1957. 2006 is the 50th such contest played, making it likely one of the longest running consecutive sports rivalries in BC High School Sports.

I remember the guy running still and the broken leg spun twice and twisting and hit him in the butt, all while he was still up..
Kelly was just trying to knock him out of bounds.. Report It Darryl Stingley comes to mind.
He played for the Patroits (I believe) and got paralyzed in a pre-season game against the Raiders.
To John P.: Stingley lived to be about 55 or so. He just died a few years ago. Well I would have to say all the players that have been paralyzed from playing would fit that.
Darryl Stingley, NE Patriots...totally paralyzed due to a neck injury. resulted in an early death for him.
In modern times players have become paralyzed from the neck down Actually that was college where they had the deaths, Pre-WW2 no one cared about the NFL basically. There are 3 that come to mind. All of these have happened in my lifetime:

History of Darlington's Football Team
Darlington Football Club was formed at a meeting held in Darlington Grammar School in July 1883 and soon became the leading club in South Durham. In 1889 Darlington became one of the ten original members of the Northern League and were champions in 1896 and 1900. The club became professional in 1908 and joined the North Eastern League as well as applying annually for election to the Second Division of the Football League.
In 1910/11 the team reached the last sixteen of the F.A. Challenge Cup playing eleven games in eight different rounds, including a memorable win over Sheffield United of the First Division, away at Bramall Lane. However, during the First World War the club ran into serious financial troubles and were only rescued by Forge Albion, who took over their affairs and settled various debts. In 1920 the side finished second in the North Eastern League and the following year were champions. This was followed by election to the newly formed Third Division North of the Football League in 1921.

        The History of Titan Football
Now entering its 112th season of competition, the Westminster Titan football program has a history and tradition unparalleled in the annals of small college football. With six national champ-ionships and over 500 victories, the Titan Tradition of gridiron excellence is known throughout the nation. Westminsters football history is unusual in another respect, in that rarely has a program been so easily divided into different eras. For Titan fans, the line of demarcation is clear: 1952, the year Dr. Harold Burry took over the reigns as head football coach at Westminster. According to former Titan defensive coordinator Darwin Huey, From that date forward, that field and its football team have never been the same. Following are histories of the four major eras of Titan football:
        Program Origins - 1891-1951
Westminster had long held that its first season of football was 1892. However, in research for his book on Westminster football, Winning, author Dr. William McTaggart made a contrary discovery. According to a 1911 edition of the Holcad, Westminsters student newspaper, Football was first taken up as a college sport in the fall of 1891. Mr. M.D. McNab of Chicago entered school that year and had some knowledge of the game. A team was organized and the first game was played with Geneva ... The score was 42-0 in favor of Geneva Those who saw the game decided that football was the most stupidest game ever seen.

St. Mary's Preparatory began its football program on October 4, 1913 when the Eaglets lost a close game at Pontiac High, 18-12. The next week St. Mary's once again played the Chiefs but this time the Red and White were victorious 14-7 for their first victory ever.
On November 1, 1913, the Eaglets played a doubleheader defeating Windsor Tech 22-7 at 10:00 a.m., and later romped over Detroit Central 26-12 at 2:00 p.m. The November 8th game at Fenton was cancelled, so the Eaglets completed their first successful season with a record of 3-1.
Richard Remington came to coach at Orchard Lake from the University of Michigan in 1913.
In 1914, the Eaglets posted a 5-1-1 record, defeating such teams as Ypsilanti Normal High, the University of Detroit Reserves and Cleary College. The Eaglets' only loss in 1914 came at the hands of Pontiac High 21-0. St. Mary's also tied Fenton 6-6 to complete their second successful season.
St. Mary's Preparatory had its first unbeaten season in 1915. The Eaglets had a 6-0 record. Ypsilanti Normal High fell three times to the Eaglets, Pontiac High lost 33-0, the University of Detroit Reserves fell 21-0 and Cleary College lost 64-0. The victory over Cleary College is St. Mary's highest point total and margin of victory in the school's history. The Eaglets outscored their opponents 194-33.
